2017-2018 Ohio State Men's Basketball (24-7, 15-3, #2 Seed in B1G Tourney)

I am getting to the point where rankings do not mean anything in basketball or football until the end of the season and I am not sure about football with only 4 teams in the playoff. At least they are many more teams in the basketball tournament so there is little room for error in leaving out the best team. Even seedings did not mean that much anymore because basketball has gotten so much more balanced over the years.

Agreed. Sometimes it’s better to be a 4 out west than a 2 in the Midwest or east in terms of opponent pairings.

through the clemson game (8 games): 118 turnovers at 14.8 per game

since the clemson game (9 games): 97 turnovers at 10.8 per game

That is quite a turnaround and a reason to be optimistic about the rest of the season. sometimes teams will look good because they go on a hot streak shooting the ball, and while we have been shooting the ball pretty well, a lot of our success is found in making better decisions and playing with great effort on the defensive end. We still obviously have holes and not a lot of depth, but right now we are not beating ourselves and making other teams earn what they get.

Jay Bilas ranked his 68 best teams in CBB right now:

27. Ohio State Buckeyes
In case you didn't notice when he was at Butler, Chris Holtmann can coach this game. Ohio State is still a work in progress, but the Buckeyes are really improving. The overall profile of the team looks average, but the trends are pointing upward. Keita Bates-Diop is ridiculously talented and is perhaps the most underrated star in college basketball. Bates-Diop is leading the Big Ten in scoring (20 PPG) and is third in rebounding (8.8 RPG). He is long, athletic, fluid and very skilled. With a great shooting stroke, Bates-Diop can score from range, and he is really versatile. Ohio State has a great one in Bates-Diop.
I'm still amazed at what Holtmann has done with this team. Looking at this roster coming into the year, a tournament berth looked like a longshot. Now, we're looking at the strong possibility of a top-3 conference finish at the NCAA's seem extremely likely.

Man, gotta hand it to Gene Smith. That couldn't have been an easy decision to fire Matta. I thought he deserved another year personally just for all he had done. But you can;t really argue with the move now.

I agree. I posted this earlier today:

Just sayin': If the Ohio State teams were not doing well, i.e. bad coaches and/or bad facilities, etc. we would all blame Gene Smith (and rightfully so). Well Gene should get some credit here.
