2017 Offensive Coordinator Discussion

NFBuck

Total Coverage.
  • Well, this is going to be THE hot topic after a number of debacles this year.

I think it's a near universal sentiment that change needs to occur. So let's discuss.

Assuming the Orange Bowl drubbing sparks the needed change, where do we go from here?

A few names being floated here and on the blogosphere, pie-in-the-sky entities included...

    Kevin Wilson
    Joker Phillips
    Mark Helfritch
Chip Kelly (rumors out of SF that he's out Monday)

Kelly would be my dream hire, even if highly, highly unlikely.

My worry about Joker is that he has a hand in this years game plan correct? That in my mind automatically disqualifies him. I know, guilt by association but unless he had been reporting to Urban that he did not like the direction the game plans were going then he needs to be marked off the list.

Chip would be nice but he will be gone in 1 year either way. I'd like to see Kevin Wilson personally because I think he is great on that side of the ball and he probably is too damaged for anyone major to want to hire right away.

I'll add though like I've added in the game thread. Change better happen or I will refuse to have expectations for next year. I will not get my hopes up for the trash that I saw this year against competent defenses.

Yes.. if Joker is given a voice in our direction again I will be uninterested in any expectations for next year.

Kevin definitely interests me, but the baggage...

Chip is definitely a long shot and couldn't be locked down for more than 2 years for sure. Helfrich could probably be a 3+ years guy if Urban can get him and he proves to be a good get.

Its not just this year it was last year too.

Whats been with this obsession of going away from the bread and butter run game and running a bunch of empty sets and other garbage over and over?

As much as I love Urban hes blind as hell if he doesnt make significant changes on the offensive side.

I'd like to give Ed Warinner a raise and move him back to Offensive Line Coach. The raise is to mask the fact he is somewhat getting demoted. Warinner is proven with this program (I don't trust Studrawa as much as Warinner).

Urban's national championships have come with a young, up-and-comer QB Coach/OC (Mullen and Herman). The downside is, they may leave after a few seasons, if successful.

I don't even trust Billy Davis as LB Coach, so who knows where Urban will turn.

I said this in 13 after the Clemson loss and I'll say it now... Urban has zero ability to make the tough decisions if he doesn't get rid of his two coordinators.

This isn't a thing where Beck needs to be the only one either.... I'm talking both.

I'd like to see if Urban could merge Art Briles' stretch system with his, but I don't know if hiring someone like Sterlin Gilbert would help. It might be too drastic a change from the Power game.

I'm gonna temper expectations. Tim Beck will be the OC next year along with Warriner. I just hope Meyer is calling the plays if this is the case.

I still hope I'm wrong. But I'm not optimistic.

Kevin Wilson would be my choice. I think Urban may need to look a bit outside his philosophy, or at least think about meshing some other guys into the fold. Tressel's last hire was one that stuck around and did a hell of a job in Stan Drayton. He was clearly not a tresselballer, so maybe Meyer will need to look a little bit outside his comfort zone. I hope whatever he does results in some improvements next season.

This offense is fucked. I'll go back to 14 if you guys want me to reference the level of fucked it is. I said it then. There's a lot of NFL players that are saying it now. This is obvious and it has been since Herman left.
It absolutely is and if necessary moves aren't made we will not win the big ten (again) and we will not be welcomed back to the playoffs.

When Tyler Durbin was missing those kicks, I was trying to figure out who is kicking next season. If Haubeil is better than Nuernberger, I'd rather not ask Haubeil to grayshirt.

Just another headache to add to the fire.

I continue to wonder if Urban would ever pull a "Bob Stoops" and start blowing out assistants. Stoops made the playoffs the next season (2015-16).

I'm hearing Kevin Wilson is a done deal. Only thing that could alter that, is at what capacity.....my understanding is it will be at OC, but I also would understand Urban requiring Wilson join in an advisory role (like Sark and Bana) prior to handing the reigns over.

Chip is interesting because he and Urban are very close. Problem is obviously the flight risk after 1 year.

No matter the hire, tonight's game was absurd. You can't take a power run team between the tackles and turn it into a finesse, spread team, running 5 wide. Damn it was bad....I love Urban but this gameplan also has to fall on him. Just miserable and honestly embarrassing....

I truly look forward to a new voice in the offensive meetings though....the last two years have been really stagnant.
