2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

I think Baker freelanced quite a bit last year but has become worse in this deployment. He also does not have four elite NFL commodities backing him up at MLB, S and CB (x2).
Simple question: do you think Dante Booker could play MLB?
How about listing some of them at Ohio State. Can 3 down Mikes play outside? Sure. Can many of the SLBs play inside? Some could but not all.

p.s. I think Baker's actually the SLB in this defense (or at least he was last year), though I believe they switched the terminology around so in reality he's still a Will as it pertains to our discussion about typical LB spots.

Yes I think Booker could play Mike. He fits better at Sam, but my point is there is not that much difference between Mike and Sam for Worley all of the sudden go from a very good LB to having the issues he has been having. The other reason I think it is a Coaching issue, is that Worley is not the only one making mistakes, all three guys are making not only mistakes they didn't make as much of last year, but they are all three making similar mistakes. To me, that suggests coaching. Make sense?

You are familiar that he was doubted throughout his high school career about whether he was physical and instinctive enough to play LB at the next level, yes?

This would have been a much better approach, which is why I said that you undercut your own point. I don't disagree with any of these points.

I didn't doubt it. He was incredibly highly rated as a LB, both inside and outside coming out of HS. I think he could just as easily learn to play Will as well.

Anyway you slice it, the LB play has not been at the same level it has been, with the same guys. Doesn't make much sense other than they are not being prepared properly. We have seen it before. Roby looked like a clown at times and is now an All Pro. It wasn't his lack of ability, but rather his lack of coaching and being put in a spot to succeed. The LBs are being placed in a scheme and system that has proven to be lethal, yet this year they are out of position and to me, look like guys that are being "surprised" by plays.

If you are prepared properly, they shouldn't look that surprised often. I know a lot of teams throw in something totally new against us that they haven't shown all year, but for all three LBs to look like they are shocked to see the FB release down the middle of the dang field right past them and they had no idea that screams film and lack of prep to me.

Ohio State's defense ranks 29th in the nation in opponents' 3rd down conversions, and 60th in 4th down conversions.

I expected the 3rd down % to be worse, but it feels like they can't get off the field when they need to. They aren't elite in causing turnovers, tied for 67th in INTs and tied in 40s for forced fumbles. Few of those have come in big games.

I think we can now see that the attrition at DB has finally affected the team. If we had even Hooker or Lattimore back there, our defense would be markedly different. Now I just pray a QB ONLY throws for 300yds and 1 TD now... Our DBs will be have to be young for a while because, by year 3, any decent kid is leaving(and I don't blame them).

Awesome D today. May have found the answer to our LB challenges. DB's were shutting down Spartys receivers and the DL was getting pressure all day long.
We went back to press man instead of trying to play zone and I think that helped a lot. No one on the back end looks like they know where to be in zone and end up standing in place 5 yards away from the reciever.

Bosa/Young next year will be the greatest bookend DE combo on school history.

If we didn't have 4 other future top-50 draft pick DEs, Young would be a freshman stud this year.
Yeah, just the like the 2015 team was going to be the greatest OSU team ever assembled... Let's get through this year first before saying a statement like that.

As much as this game showed a dominant defense, I'm not ready to get so excited about a team that needs a loss to get motivated. I wish they would take care of business and play up to their potential (like this game) weekly. This score SHOULD'VE been the Iowa score. We can't have a two faced team if we expect to win an NC. I honestly don't know if the team played that good or if MSU was that bad after last week. Hate to be Debbie Downer, and I know wins make everyone forget about the losses, but that Iowa game is still in the back of my head. But congrats to the D

The linebackers IMO were fantastic. Filled holes, got pressure on the QB and were great in coverage.

I wish we would've always kept Worely out wide. Besides replacing one starter was hard enough but we technically were replacing two by putting Worely inside.

Oh well though... great game by the silver bullets.

Edited: damn each linebacker had a sack... come on let's keep this trio rolling
