2017 tOSU Defense Discussion

Borland has looked better inside although he's still learning the position.
Booker, was hurt till this year and is still learning the position so I have to cut him a little slack for his play .
Harrison has looked better although he's still in learning mode.
Baker, has been an obvious disappointment. Has hurt his NFL draft stock probably by his play. . The consistent effort is just not there.
Worley is better outside.
Best lineup is Borland inside, Worley and Harrison outside.

My point is, our LBs have a huge problem covering TEs, to the point that it could make Hornibrock look like an elite QB, and that in turn could set up their run game. Game plan is definitely key for this week, pressure is on the LBs for sure to stop the RB at their line of defense and cover the TEs better than they have all season
It's sort of weird how we can't cover TE's or FB's because our LB's are 90% of the time more athletic then them. Seriously, go back and watch Iowa and those big busts come in zone coverage.

Make it easy if we are struggling and just play straight man.

How is Booker still learning the position when he's been at OSU for what, 3yrs now? Ill give Harrison the benefit of the doubt. And Baker seems to have mailed it in the for the NFL, he's still a 1st round or early 2nd round based on potential and ability

Is Harrison just better? I'm not sure but it looks that way. Maybe more athletic(Harrison). But Booker is no slouch athletically.
Some believe the linebacker coach is part of the "problem? But is it?
Bakers "problems". are pretty obvious. He hasn't gotten better from last year when Fickel was coaching him.
I want to see Harrison out there. And Borland in the middle with Worley outside and Baker only spelling Worley.
This game will be a slug fest and it plays to Borlands strengths.
But somebody better cover Fumagalli.

Booker can outrun Harrison backwards. Watch the PSU game. Booker runs down Barkley. Barkley later runs away from Harrison on a 3rd down play like he was wearing cement shoes. Booker is much more athletic.
Chris Spielman could barely run down Chuck Long. I dont give a shit how fast he can run if he cant stop looking in the backfield and his man starts running free in the flat and catches the easiest touchdown of his career (see Iowa TE TD). If he can't focus on just doing his job and allowing his teammates to make a play, he's a liability. I don't want freaking liabilities in the CCG. Know your damn role and ball out. Best DL in the country will eventually make the other team make mistakes. Let them do their jobs.

Which is why I don't understand why we just don't play 100% man.. somehow playing zone is like Chinese to our linebackers

They do a lot of the time but, playing man is taxing and risky. If the DL don't get to the QB then those guys have to cover longer, and we really did just lose 3/4's of the best defensive backfield in the country. It works great when we have the best athletes having their A games but when we dont..... ugh.
A great defense can switch between zone and man and really confuse the offense but it doesnt seem that this defense can do that.

I was addressing the post referring to Harrison being "more athletic" than Booker which by all accounts is not remotely accurate.

I've watched a Harrison very closely. I'm not impressed with him that much. Getting to the ball is key. No one did it like Spiels. I've watched Harrison not get there too.
