2020 B1G Schedule Release

Some of those protocols include:
  • Twice-weekly testing by a third-party testing laboratory for football players, coaches and additional staff members who come in regular, in-person close contact with the athletes.
  • Testing within three days of that week's game day. For Ohio State's Thursday season opener on Sept. 3, for example, those individuals will be tested on Monday.
  • The results of all positive tests prior to game day must be shared with that week's upcoming opponent, and all positive results following that week's game must be shared with the previous week's opponent.
  • A 14-day quarantine period for those who test positive and anyone who came within close contact of those who test positive.

The Big Ten's COVID-19 Medical Protocols released on Wednesday already include some of the protocols requested by the players, including twice-weekly tests, though they do not include testing on the day of competition. That said, Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren said Wednesday during an interview on BTN that the conference is working on incorporating rapid testing in addition to the PCR tests that athletes will receive during the week.

Warren spoke with two athlete representatives from all 14 conference schools during a Zoom call on Monday night to discuss those medical protocols and other concerns with Big Ten athletes, according to The Athletic's Nicole Auerbach, and told ESPN's Mark Schlabach that he read the players' letter on Tuesday and is open to speaking to the players about it.

It looks like every team just added one team from the other division and then the dates were jumbled. If that is the case, and the only option was adding one team from the West, I'm glad they added Purdue. Since we already had 5 conference home games, it had to be AT Purdue. Given the constraints, I think it's the best we could've hoped for.

Now someone go back to this time in 2019 and tell me that A) in one year the B1G would announce a pre-Halloween edition of The Game AND B) that I would be OK with it. I would've been willing to bet a lot that A would not happen soon. I would've been willing to bet anything that B would not happen while I drew breath.

Interdasting that they've chosen to start the season on time. It's kind of going to knock the legs out from any force majeure argument for getting out of the contracts for the payday games if the schools are still playing on the same dates.

I'm no lawyer, but I suspect that, if nothing else, the 8-figure hit all of the P5 schools are taking will be enough. And when you consider all of the reasons for conference-only that were bandied about on this board, it seems to me that there were significant issues in play whose importance dwarfs those contracts.

May main reason for expecting that the G5 schools won't be winning any lawsuits any time soon is not based on the above; it's based on the fact that the B1G member schools all have lawyers and they all agreed to start the season on time. Your concern seems to me to be worth considering, and I bet they did consider it. And they chose to start on time anyway. I think there's very little chance they would've done so if they thought that it would be the difference in any lawsuits from the BGs and Buffalos of the world.

All makes sense. Plus, I think any schools really going to mattresses legally can kiss any future payday games bye-bye, and in the case of in-state schools any non-athletic collaborations too which pretty much solely benefit the MAC schools while doing next to nothing other than a bit of political good will for the B1G schools.
