2020 Team Discussion Thread

Really want to forget that Clemson game and jump right into the 2020 team.

Reasons for concern:

1.) Defensive Backs: Losing Fuller and Arnette to graduation. Okudah is surely gone and Wade is likely gone. Those are four studs that are missing. No way that isn't felt next year. Not to mention who is going to coach them?

2.) Defensive Line: Yes we have depth here but no way that losing Young, Hamilton, Cornell, and Landers isn't felt. Hamilton came on really strong this year. Good news is that we return Cooper, Togiai, Friday, Smith and Harrison. We also have Larry Johnson.

3.) Linebackers: Losing Harrison sucks. Borland has been the weak spot in the D all year and he returns. Werner seemed to have gotten better as the year went on but I don't think he's necessarily going to be a star. Browning will have to step up big.

4.) Running Back: A distant fourth concern but no way losing Dobbins will not hurt this team a little bit. The Clemson game illustrated the difference between Teague and Dobbins. Although with a good offseason Teague could easily be the best back in the B1G next year.

Reasons to be optimistic:

1.) Fields returns enough said.

2.) Offensive Line: Returning three starters including a First Team All American is huge. Should be a strength for this team.

3.) Wide receivers: It will hurt losing Hill, Victor, and Mack for sure. This was a very deep group. But returning Olave plus Wilson looks like an absolute star. I expect Jameson Williams to have a big breakout year next season. Plus Julian Fleming.

4.) Ryan Day

5.) Kicking Game: Chrisman slipped a little this year but returning him and Haubeil makes for a pretty strong kicking game.

Avoid the Iowa/Purdue meltdown and handle PSU we are good. Day figures the roster and coaches out.

We have a couple of great qb prospects coming in that Day can coach to have some quality behind Fields.
Front 7 reload.
Secondary will be a question mark early on but we can protect them with pressure during the acclimation period.

Teague is no Dobbins but he will run all over defenses behind our returning linemen.

Receiving core will take a step back early but we reload fairly quickly.
Special teams great as always.

Fuck Michigan then Clemson then whatever SEC team ESPN crowns by week 2.

Schedule wise we are set up better too..
  • Sept. 5 – Bowling Green
  • Sept. 12 – at Oregon
  • Sept. 19 – Buffalo
  • Sept. 26 – Rutgers
  • Oct. 3 – Off
  • Oct. 10 – Iowa
  • Oct. 17 – at Michigan State
  • Oct. 24 – at Penn State
  • Oct. 31 – Nebraska
  • Nov. 7 – Indiana
  • Nov. 14 – at Maryland
  • Nov. 21 – at Illinois
  • Nov. 28 – Michigan
It's literally a 1 game season with PED and that's it. Oregon will transition with a different QB, Iowa replaces a lot, MSU replaces a lot, and the other teams suck.

My starting lineups

OL- Munford, Miller, Myers, Davis, NPF
RB-Teague or Crowley
QB- Fields
WR- Olave, Wilson, Williamson, Flemming, Jaxon, and Scott

DL- Cooper, Togai, Vincent, Harrison
LB- Browning, Borland, Werner
DB- Riep, Proctor, Brown and Banks

We really have a good team other than the secondary. I'd give anything to have a Clemson 2017 surprise where their entire early entry players all came back. Could you guys imagine if Dobbins, Wade, Okudah, and Young all came back? Shoot they'd be better off just giving us the trophy and saving everyone else the hassle.

That said if we could get just Wade to come back that'd be enormous.

DBs and RB are my only concern for next year. I do think that my ‘concerns’ are fairly minor all things considered. MT getting 1st reps from here on out will go a long way to getting him where he needs to be to kill in the B1G. My question on him is more about beyond the B1G stage.

DBs will be a bit of a mystery until we start to see who stays / goes. If Wade doe come back, that’s some good stuff. Leadership and his skills will be immensely important to a group of guys who are getting on the field for a lot of meaningful playing time. It will be very interesting to see who they land for a coach. I imagine that will play into Wade’s decision. That said, I do think that he benefits from coming back for one more. I’ve also not seen anything as to where he projects in the draft, so the above is a gut feel.

Oh, and LBs... still a bit of a hot mess there IMHO. I can’t believe that Tuf and Pete are still our best options on the field. I hope that the younger guys step up.

Concerns:

LBs - seems every year they’re problematic especially in the middle.

RBs - going to miss JK in a big way. Very evident last night.

Coordinators- who replaces Hafley and probably Yurich?

Positives:

Day

Fields

Oline

Hartline: WR group is going to be amazing.

So you think our Middle LB play was good? Harrison and Werner were fine, but once again the middle was exposed last night. Both Borland and Browning were, well, not good.
I thought they played well yes... that was a scramble for 64 yards for Lawrence and Proctor was there to make the play but didn't. We held Etienne to what 35 yards rushing and really held them pretty well outside of the one run.

Teague is not a concern for me. He is simply not the same RB as Dobbins and you can't run those same plays with him. I'm sure he'll get quicker, but he's always gonna be a bigger power back with more top end speed.

EDIT: And fuckin mark it down, the WRs will only need a little bit of time to gel and actually improve on this years corps. They're going to be one of the best units in the country. 2 legit #1s in Olave & Wilson, the burner in Jameson, guys like Gill can be great in the slot. Plus the best freshman class in school history.

Mkay, I saw a lot of the typical Borland getting cleared out and Browning just flat out of position to make plays. The middle was where all their big plays came from.

This. When Clemson needed a play it came at the expense of the LB's more often than not.

I think the LB recruiting, development and play can all get better. Modern offenses put LB's in some incredibly tough positions but I watched Clemson's dual Boreland look a like's wreck havoc all game. It can be done.

Like 2019, plenty of reason for optimism heading into 2020. There are certainly things to go to work on. We can drop one to Oregon but no room for error in the B1G. I expect our offense will be more consistent in the passing game and possibly a small step back in our running game. With more quality depth in the QB room we may see Fields opened up more next year which would help Teague. I’m hoping to see Gill develop as a Curtis Samuel clone and change of pace while we lean on Teague for tough yards and a consistent 100 - 125 yards in our tough 4 B1G game stretch

If we can reload our DL, take a moderate step forward at the LB position we can overcome the substantial chasm in our secondary. This team should be built to dominant the B1G. The biggest question is if they’ll be setup as a true playoff contender like this years squad. The top contender heading into 2020 is Clemson (yet another reason to be pissed we didn’t knock them off their perch). Bama will be a contender. Possibly Florida, Auburn or Baylor and we may see something out of Utah but I think we’ll be built to win against those teams.

I do expect some transfer portal action to add depth at RB and DB. I think Day will have a stellar 2021 recruiting class and hoping to see 4-5 strong contributors from the 2020 class next season. Good to be a Buckeye! Cheers to a really fun and successful 2019 season. Proud of this years squad and the job performed by Ryan Day. Props to Urban for the succession plan!

Penn State turns over almost it's entire defense but their schedule is ridiculously easy outside of our game and a trip to AA (chuckles).

tsun is in a world of hurt with personnel turnover and a brutal schedule. You just hate to see it.
