One year ago today the season was canceled. On the bright side, that was day 23 in the countdown, so this day in the countdown (Les Horvath day) didn't appear until October 2nd last year, after the revised-revised schedule came out. So yeah, counting the days seems to be taking forever this year, but count your blessings. It's been worse.

Cornelius "Neal" Colzie (No one ever called him Cornelius)

He played Left Halfback on some of Ohio State's best defenses, a position we would call Cornerback today. He was also a dynamic punt returner both at Ohio State and in the NFL. He holds the Ohio State record for the longest punt return in a bowl game, a 56 yarder to the USC 9-yard-line in the 1974 Rose Bowl. It set up the go-ahead score, beginning a 22-0 run to close out the game 42-21. He once turned down a movie role because it would have required him to wear a Stealers uniform. He died in August of 2001 at the age of 48. Rest In Peace.

Why would there be virtually no one in the stands? Maybe the game at that point was a blowout?

It was a game against Fort Knox, played IIRC in 1944. WW2 probably had something to do with people’s priorities back then. It was also a time when young men made up a significant portion of any sports teams’ fan base, and those guys were too busy getting shot at in France and the South Pacific.

Fort Knox would have been 1942. Here are the games against military teams during WWII (some highly ranked opponents, Iowa pre-flight finished AP #2 in 1943, and Great Lakes Naval finished #6 that year).

1942 Fort Knox Ohio Stadium W, 59-0
1942 Iowa Pre-Flight Ohio Stadium W, 41-12
1943 #8 Iowa Pre-Flight Ohio Stadium L, 13-28
1943 at #12 Great Lakes Naval Ross Field (Chicago) L, 6-13
1944 #6 Great Lakes Naval Ohio Stadium W, 26-6

Well then I retract my previous statement.

There were plenty of American soldiers in England at that point in the war, but they wouldn’t even be sent to North Africa until November of that year (the Ft Knox game was in September). But there were definitely Ohioans getting shot at on Guadalcanal at this point in the war, so I guess I was half right.

Either way… the war and the score… there’s your answer

Tom Tupa

Was the starting QB in 1987, the role in which he is shown in the above picture. His post-season accolades however, were for his punting.

The old 86-87 basketball low tops on astroturf glued over concrete. Good god that playing surface sucked.

What’s really funny is this was the same year Nike launched the legendary Air Max running shoe while Reebok was developing the Cross Trainer.

Meanwhile, elite athletes were playing football in a 60 year old basketball shoe with less ankle support than the Chuck Taylor All Stars I wore while skateboarding.
