2022-2023 Ohio State Men's Basketball

You forgot the Gene Smith factor. He actually cares about NCAA violations in making coaching decisions. Sean Miller will never be seriously considered by Gene.

Sean was given the all clear of any violations. Five years of looking and they came up with;

"The hearing panel found no violation for the former head men’s basketball coach because the hearing panel determined that the former head men’s basketball coach demonstrated that he promoted an atmosphere of compliance and monitored two of his assistant coaches regarding the academic eligibility of men’s basketball prospective student-athletes, rebutting the presumption of head coach responsibility."

Pretty decent overview of the season and the program under Hotmann, with some depressing stats included.

The basketball Buckeyes are missing so much right now, it’s stunning for a program this established to be this lacking. They haven’t quit, but they aren’t connected. They aren’t broken, because this roster of freshmen and transfers was never truly assembled.
They’re lost.
If Ohio State finishes 4-16 in the Big Ten, it will be one of the five worst conference seasons In this century for those nine programs. That’s 207 total seasons, and the only other years where established Big Ten powers (plus Maryland’s time in the ACC) had a conference winning percentage of .200 or worse were: Purdue in 2004-05 and 2005-06, and Indiana in 2008-09 and 2010-11.

Ohio State hasn’t fallen this far in Big Ten play since 1997-98.
Ohio State basketball should never have a season this bad, for any reason. It’s not what winning programs do, and the Buckeyes are that. Fans deserve more. So do the freshmen. For their sake, you hope the Buckeyes can find themselves again very quickly. Maybe they will, and next year Holtmann and the Buckeyes can reflect on the haters.

That it has fallen this far makes me have strong doubts that will happen. And whatever’s next, this season shouldn’t have been a part of the progression.

If Purdue and Indiana aren't immune to having a season like this - which both had during the Thad era - then Ohio State isn't immune, either.

But it cannot become a trend. It has to be a hiccup. Time will tell.
