2022 Rose Bowl, tOSU vs Utah, Jan 1st @ 5pm EST, ESPN

Strange times we live in when I see 10-2 and a Rose Bowl berth as a "failed" season by many fans/alumni.

I also see a large segment of the base saying the Rose Bowl is a "worthless" game because it isn't for a championship and half our players should sit.

That attitude isn't something I can wrap my head around. It's history and prestige, it would be like setting foot in Lambeau. I'm not going to miss that opportunity. The current mindset of "If it isn't for 1st place I don't want it" is bullshit that has a familiar association with many topics of our time. I just see it bleeding over into football now and I don't like it.

Even worse, I never thought I'd see players skip the Rose Bowl in favor of preparing for the draft. I understand a man has to go his own way at times, but what about the team? Your team? Imagine had Kurt Coleman, Thaddeus Gibson, or Cam Heyward (if he was considering opting out) not being apart of that 09-10 game?!?

At some point I question how far we've gone into the business and brand aspect and not just appreciating and enjoying football game by game; while acknowledging how fleeting and precious ours seasons are.

Edit: And we've come to hear for years about SEC teams having excuses for underperforming in bowl games that aren't championship related. Or, another recent one I've noticed, had our game vs scUM been in better weather conditions we would have gotten the passing game going.

Don't be (the bulk) of SEC fans, and more importantly let's not forget that our fan base just a decade ago was chastising SEC offenses for performing so well on offense because of favorable weather conditions the B1G isn't afforded.

Funny enough, depending on how far you're willing to go back in time, I might be able to double check the closet and see what I can dust off.

I appreciate it.

I'm not giving this one up. If you want to win a title as a B1G team you somehow have to build a team that can hang with Bama/Clemson/Whoever.....but also has to be able to slog out a game in a blizzard if needed (which, the Michigan game was not). That's not something a team from the SEC will ever have to do.

I don't think you should "give it up". But it's not an excuse that should have any merit. This coaching staff failed to deploy the running game in a manner that suited the elements. They became obsessed with their shiny toys at QB and WR.

Same thing happened to Tressel that one time in Glendale.

This team needs to strive to maintain adaptability for all environments because of our geographical situation. Hell, the opposite could be said for 2019. The offense ran through Dobbins so much that we struggled to pass and screen game against a very suspect Clemson secondary. I maintain that the over emphasis of the running game slowed Fields' development as a passer that year. I see no difference this go around save for where the emphasis was placed.

At the end of the day I'd rather have a more refined QB situation. But The Game goes to show what happens when the conditions of timing and design align so perfectly.

I think they would've gone to the run game if the run game was working. For some reason, Henderson seemed to seek out tackles and just go down.....and the line seemed to only open up holes for Williams. If Henderson had some of the holes Williams did, we would have been unstoppable.

I think Trey really needs to improve his vision. There were countless times this year where I noticed a cut back lane wide open but he seemed hellbent on running into a tackler like you had already mentioned.

This 100%. When Trey picks the right hole, he's gone. But there were some noticeable issues with his vision and getting through the first level. All this said, of course he's a true freshman learning the ropes after a year of not playing at all. I have to remind myself of that after he looked super human for a stretch. I'm sure that will be something Alford works with Trey on in bowl practices and the offseason. Sky is the limit for Trey with a year of Coach Mick and some film review.

I used to be an old curmudgeon on players sitting out in bowl games, but I've come around a bit. For someone like Olave, he came back when he didn't need to and was the ultimate team player. Of course I hope he plays but if not, he gave us a whole year that I frankly didn't think we'd get. There's others I feel the same way with and I hope we keep it going with a full squad, but I'll think no less of anyone if they choose not to play.

I’d care if bowl games mattered anymore…but they don’t.

Utah isn't the most exciting opponent, especially for teams east of the Mississippi. But they are a solid team and Kyle Whittingham is one of the most underrated coaches in CFB today imo.

I think this could be a good game, it's definitely an interesting matchup from a personnel standpoint at the very least even though there isn't any history between these two programs playing before.

It could be tough for the Buckeyes if they don't care to be there and play like it. But if they do care to be there and play to their potential, I think Ohio State will win by 10+ pretty convincingly.

And for those who are not excited about the prospect of beating up on these Utes, this video should provide some motivation, or a sense of dislike, for the denizens of the great Salt Lake:
