2023-2024 Ohio State Men's Basketball (apathy, depression, hope?)

Ahh yes the annual wailing and gnashing of teeth has begun by the turds at 11W and on Facebook wishing for a "big man" in the transfer portal despite ample recent and historical evidence of guard play mattering much more in this era....
I think Okpara is the modern big the Bucks need. Lengthy, athletic, rim defender that can set screens and finish the easy buckets on offense (provided you have good guard penetration/passing).

Maybe someday people will adapt to accept the traditional back to the basket big is a dying breed - unless it’s an absolute stud. Even then, 3s > 2s…guards/wings are going to continue to shoot and run the show.

Yup - and even a back to the basket big who can pass can work in that scenario and Key can be that guy. They really aren't hurting for size as much as they are hurting for consistent outside shooting.

100%. There is still a big role for Key. He’s athletic enough to get out, set screens and space the floor. He has great hands and can roll to the hoop or pick and pop - especially as I expect his shot to improve. He’s a great worker.

And it is still nice to selectively get good looks down low when you need an easy bucket. It will help even more if guards are hitting shots and defenses are afraid to slack in or double. Key will eat you alive if he has room or pass out if he doesn’t.

Basic concept in my mind is instead of an “inside-out” game, it’s evolved to an “outside-in” game. It starts with guards that can shoot which extends a defense, then you get looks for a classic big or guys that can roll to the hoop in space.

College basketball's way-too-early top 25 for 2024

Ohio State isn't in the top 25

15 MORE TO WATCH

Ohio State — Brice Sensabaugh kept the door ever so slightly ajar for returning, and while he’s likely gone, the Buckeyes have a nice combination of young talent and a top 10 recruiting class. A bounce-back season could be in the cards for Chris Holtmann’s crew.

Pretty good transfer get by Holtmann. Can be a serviceable player. Doesn’t increase the teams quickness or athleticism but he can find a role. Liken him to Sueing at this point.

Guessing he just wants to play on a winner for once so he’ll be driven and team first. I’ll take it.

With the add of Bonner, he slots in as the #3 guard and top backup for the 1-2 spots behind Thornton and Chatman. Clearly Key and Okpara will man the 5. I would guess for now Gayle and Middleton will rotate at the 3, and Battle and Royal at the 4. We shall see if they add anyone else.

The Buckeyes will take on West Virginia next season in a matchup that will take place on Dec. 30 in Cleveland. A contract has not been finalized with a venue as of yet, but Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse could be a likely host site.
