I mean, you could bring in any of the legendary coaches in their primes, and basketball will always be second to football at Ohio State. I'm not saying they shouldn't try to win the championships, but Diebler seems like a safe bet to make. And the basketball team and the situation they're in is where you make those kinds of bets. He isn't going to need some huge paycheck, yet, and he's shown that he can win these games. Give him a 2- or 3-year contract. Like someone else said here, best case scenario is that you've locked in your coach for the next 2 to 3 decades. When was the last time Ohio State had a head coach for 2 decades? Worst case scenario is probably that you're looking for a new head coach in 2-3 years.

The only potential downside I see is how he acts as "CEO." Right now, his only focus is on coaching. How he will succeed in recruiting and roster construction is an unknown.

I said before I thought Diebler needed to get this team to the tournament to get the job. Looks like it's not happening now.

Let's be honest, this team needs a huge shift in talent. I'm not gonna blame Diebler for the players on the roster now, but can he recruit the players OSU needs?

I'm kinda hoping for a big shift in the recruiting approach. Mobley and White aren't gonna be enough to get this team to the next level. In fact, without Battle, I'm quite sure the team will be substantially worse next season. The AD needs to approach this from the standpoint of some things with the roster composition need changed. OSU needs to have a big who's at least 250 and can play. Now who's going to get those guys?

Halfway serious. If the AD wants a successful basketball program you put influence, emphasis and fundraising towards those collectives to get the top dogs. That is what will bring recruits in 2025, 2026 and beyond.

If Diebler is even partly competent at relationships we’ll be good. Let’s remember 247 had Diebler as a top 3 recruiting coach in the country in 2022 and 2023. He’s been OSU’s guy on the recruiting trail.

And the turnaround from the guys playing for him shows his messaging connects to the kids on the court.

I almost liken it to an NBA coach at this point. Free agency money (NIL) will build the roster. Now you need a guy that can 1) motivate and manage people 2) build a general system to let talented players be talented 3) have timely X’s and O’s when needed

My big question is the staff. He’s still new in the coaching world so who are his connections? Who will sign up to help? His brother Jon from Matta’s staff? Not sure that’s good enough.

It’s important he’s surrounded by good talented people as he steps in to a CEO/leadership role full time. I’m still 100% willing to roll the dice.

Yeah. Recruiting is paramount, so we've gotta get that straightened out no matter who's in charge. No excuse for OSU to never be in the conversation with any 5-star recruits every single year.

Now as far as I can tell, Dusty May is the only guy other than Diebler getting real consideration. I would think May would bring an instant boost to recruiting, and I doubt we'd see that with Diebler. But did May just catch lightning in a bottle last season? It's a little concerning that FAU hasn't been just as good this season, considering the core of the team returned.

FAU has been very underwhelming after their final four team came back.

Not for nothing but they are 7-13 against the spread this calendar year. Including losing as 12 point favorites to Temple today. People keep expecting them to be good but they aren’t.

Johnell Davis is still extremely fun but I have Dusty May questions. Feels like the FGCU (Lob City) coach that moved to USC and hasn’t done anything. (hot wife though)
