2024 Depth Chart Projection

RYAN DAY EXPECTS OHIO STATE “TO HAVE A REALLY GOOD GROUP COME BACK NEXT YEAR,” LEADING TO PATIENT TRANSFER APPROACH

144178_h.jpg

Even though Ohio State lost 14 players to the transfer portal and hasn’t yet added one, Ryan Day says all but one or two of the Buckeyes’ 85 allotted scholarships for the 2024 season would be accounted for based on who they expect to have on next year’s roster right now.

That, along with multiple other comments Day made during Wednesday’s National Signing Day press conference, suggests Ohio State is confident it will get many of its top draft-eligible players back for another season.

“I'm optimistic because I think a lot of these guys feel like there's some unfinished business here, and there's a great opportunity to come back and have a great team on all three phases and both sides of the ball,” Day said.

One week out from the Cotton Bowl, the only Ohio State player with remaining eligibility who has formally declared for the 2024 NFL draft is running back Miyan Williams, who was already out for the season due to a knee injury. It’s anticipated that fifth-year seniors Cade Stover, Tommy

Eichenberg and Steele Chambers and projected top-three overall draft pick Marvin Harrison Jr. will each forgo their final season of eligibility, though none of them have made an official announcement yet.

Their departures, along with the players who have entered the transfer portal and the Buckeyes who will be out of eligibility after the Cotton Bowl, would unofficially leave Ohio State at 86 scholarship players for the 2024 season including the 20 recruits who signed with the Buckeyes on Wednesday.

If there are in fact only two or three more departures to come beyond that, Ohio State would retain the majority of its junior class, a group that includes many of the team’s biggest stars such as running back TreVeyon Henderson, wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, cornerbacks Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock, defensive ends JT Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer, defensive tackles Mike Hall and Tyleik Williams and left guard Donovan Jackson.

Here’s what AG just posted over on BH. Would he pretty crazy if true:

Henderson: staying Makes some sense. He gets to be the clear premier back and could improve his draft stock with a monster final season. The OL improved a lot and once he was healthy, you saw how dynamic he can be. Put together a full season like that and stay healthy, he could be looking at late first or early second round.
Harrison Jr.: gone Everyone expected that and he would be crazy not to declare since he is a lock for a top five pick.
Egbuka: staying Actually surprised here, seemed like he had a late first round grade and even with the injuries, thought he would be like JSN. But the surprise is a very pleasant
Jackson: staying I expected this one, he graded out pretty poorly overall this season despite the obvious talent. Now that he has meshed with Simmons and Hinzman and won't have to handhold either one, he can truly display his talent and make a huge jump in his draft stock.
Hall: gone A tad surprised, he was pretty streaky though the talent is obvious. Would have loved to have him back but he will likely be a mid-round pick and I get the decision.
Williams: staying Very surprised on that one, Tyleik had a monster year and I'm not sure he could improve his draft stock much. But nobody tell him I said that because he would be a critical cog in the defensive front next year.
Tuimoloau: staying Somewhat surprised. If I am drafting him, the massive upside and sheer talent gets you excited. But despite great performances, consistency has been lacking and if he can work on that next year, he might go from a late first round - early second round pick to a top 10 pick. Plus if Sawyer stays then that helps him a lot so there can't be a ton of double teams.
Sawyer: staying That makes sense. He is starting to emerge into the talent that got him his recruiting ranking, but another year would help vault him up.
Burke: staying That one is shocking. Had an amazing season and about a high of a grade in efficiency as you can get. But for whatever reason his draft grade seems to be second or third round right now, so maybe there is a good reason. All I could think of is size, which won't change with another season, but our last Denzel CB wasn't that big either and he is doing just fine in the league. Either way, would be a huge return.
Hancock: staying Surprised as well, but ecstatic if it happens. Getting back Hancock, Davison and Hancock (and Mathews/CSH, plus our incoming frosh CBs) would be ridiculous and easily the best CB unit in the country next year.
Ransom: staying Very surprised even with the injury. Had a hell of a year and maybe missing the games at the end with his injury hurts his draft position. But as with many others, would be a Christmas present for him to return, love the kid and he is such an important part of the secondary. If all this goes down, we will have the best secondary in the country with literally everyone of importance coming back.
WOW. Specific comments in red above if that scenario goes down. If that goes down, we at least know the defense should be stacked again. Biggest part of all that imo (and you could argue they are all huge and be right) is that if JT, Sawyer and Tyleik all come back, that not only makes our defense elite again but buys us more time to figure out the future DL.

AG is as solid of an insider as you can come by and I wouldn't have reason to doubt him (obviously kids could change their minds though), but oddly enough this would make sense mostly. LJ Sr is coming back imo to at least coach the returning DL to give them the best draft position possible and finish out with them...speculation on my behalf but I don't think all those guys come back for a new DL coach. Plus you have all the transfers/early departures at the positions where key guys are returning, and we didn't hit the early portal much at all. And top it off with the guys that are choosing to play in the bowl game, and it felt like we might have a lot of guys return.

If this happens, I am going to be excited doing my depth chart projection for next year.

Agree on Hall, but I saw on another site that he has a newborn. So that may factor in to his decision. Yes, an NIL package could be worked out, but it could be quite stressful with a newborn, playing CFB and attending class
I’m most surprised by Burke returning, because I think he could be a 1st or 2nd rounder.

Just sayin': You gotta read 11W's logic on some of them, like for QB.

"Conventional wisdom would suggest that Devin Brown or Lincoln Kienholz would be the next man up since they’re the only two returning quarterbacks on the roster. But Sayin and Noland are too talented to be buried on the depth chart as five-star freshmen, especially in a world where the transfer portal is always an option for players who don’t like their standing on the depth chart."

What are some of the specifics you guys are hoping to see as far as performance this season? Obviously we want to see it be the best ever but realistically:

1. I think the biggest for me is seeing JT establish consistency. Guy takes over two games per year it seems but other weeks if he were young enough there’d be an amber alert.

2. same with Sawyer albeit I don’t think he has the same caliber as JT to be a player that dominates or takes over games — but he can still be impactful and disruptive. Going to need more consistency if this defense takes the next step to get this program’s monkey off its back.

3. Josh Simmons: some are higher on him here and that’s fine but some of his performances made my skin crawl. Probably a little recency bias talking here but that effortless block that led to a sack in the cotton bowl where his body language screamed “fuck this” (like most of the team’s did) it was just gross. I’ll take it as a positive if he can sustain mediocrity which he seemed capable. If he takes another step it’s a bonus but I don’t expect much.

4.) the Jud/Hedo duo: this is going to be fascinating from a locker room and on the field dynamic. Will Henderson be reliable late in the season? History says no. Happy to be wrong - but he just doesn’t seem built to be a reliable ball carrier. I know he stayed to prove otherwise in conjunction with a nice cash infusion. Running back should be a strength with Hayden both.

The room itself looks stable and we seeemingly shouldn’t be worried about catastrophe over one single injury.

Sonny Styles: this will be unpopular but I’d like to see more consistency here too. Absurd potential, occasional flash: that’s what he’s been to me and I’d like to see more consistent production out of him too.

I dunno maybe I went off the rails but the depth chart made me think of things to look out for in 2024; if that should be a different thread I’ll pack my shit and leave. (And go to a new thread)

I can’t stay out of here sorry
