Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.

BROOME CHOSEN OVC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

Not a bad start to a career for Morehead State's Johni Broome.

The 6-foot-10 men's basketball newcomer was selected as the first Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week for the 2020-21 season.

Broome, a native of Plant City, Fla., got a starting assignment in his first collegiate week and delivered solid performances. In his first career home game, a win over Arkansas State Sunday, Broome led the team wth 25 points and 12 rebounds to go along with five blocked shots. He scored 19 in the second half, including seven straight in the final three minutes in a close game that distanced the Eagles from the Red Wolves for the final margin.

His point total was the most for an Eagle freshman since Jordan Walker (who finished his career last season) scored 26 at UT Martin in 2016-17.

Broome opened his college career with an 11-point, five-rebound effort at No. 10 Kentucky Wednesday and followed with six points and six rebounds against Richmond Friday. For the week, he averaged 14.0 points and 7.7 rebounds and hit 61 percent of his shots.

Broome and the Eagles are slated to take on top-25 Ohio State on the road Wednesday night at 5 p.m. ET.

Previewing Ohio State’s non-conference basketball schedule

Morehead State (Dec. 2)

Next up on the slate is Morehead State. The Eagles ended last season with a 13-19 record, going 7-11 in the Ohio Valley Conference to finish eighth out of 12 teams. Head coach Preston Spradlin is entering his fifth year with the program, coaching to a 45-69 overall mark thus far. Morehead State will need to replace its two leading scorers from last season, as both Jordan Walker (12.3 ppg) and Djimon Henson (10.4 ppg) have since graduated.

Picked to finish eighth once again in the OVC preseason polls, the Eagles return a young but experienced group of players, led by senior forward James Baker and sophomore forward Tyzhaun Claude. Baker is the only senior on the roster, averaging 9.1 points per game last year while leading the team with 42 blocks — good for fourth in the OVC in blocks per game (1.3). Claude started 19 games as a freshman last season, averaging 9.5 points per game on nearly 60% shooting from the field.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: NO. 23 OHIO STATE SEEKING IMPROVEMENT AGAINST MOREHEAD STATE

The Buckeyes are 2-0 on the season, but their spotless record does not reflect the team’s play thus far.

After a narrow victory over UMass-Lowell (1-2), the Buckeyes will return to the Covelli Center for a second time to take on Morehead State (1-2). Head coach Chris Holtmann said Sunday that UMass-Lowell’s zone gave his team problems, and he said Tuesday that the game revealed some issues that need to be corrected.

“I think every opportunity, you get a chance to really learn and improve and get exposed in some areas, and we got exposed the other night, and I know Morehead is going to come in off a win and look to really challenge in a lot of ways,” Holtmann said Tuesday.

Nearly half of the players that saw the floor against the River Hawks did not see the floor for the Buckeyes in 2019-20, and redshirt senior guard CJ Walker said the lack of exhibition games has forced the team to increase its cohesion at a rapid rate.

“You gotta grow up really fast as a team, that chemistry has to come really fast,” Walker said Sunday. “Obviously now, you’ve got to learn as you go, each and every practice, each and every game you’ve got to get better and learn.”

The Buckeyes struggled to knock down shots until the late stages of the game against UMass-Lowell and finished shooting 40 percent from the field.

Ohio State is now shooting 44.5 percent through two games, but a Morehead State team will come to Columbus with a defense that allows teams to shoot 51.8 percent from the floor.

Despite the high percentage, Holtmann said the Eagles present a tough challenge for the Buckeyes.

“They’re the most physical team we’ve played — I would say for sure with their size and just how physical and hard they play,” Holtmann said.

The Buckeyes have scored 84.5 percent of their points from either the paint or free throw line.

Although the team has succeeded in playing on the inside and getting to the charity stripe, Ohio State is entering the game hitting on only 10 of its 36 shots from deep, and Morehead State is allowing opponents to shoot 32.7 percent on 3-pointers.

Redshirt senior guard CJ Walker is among the players that have struggled to dial in their shots early in the season.

Shooting a career-high 42.7 percent from the field a year ago, Walker has started the season hitting on only 33.3 percent of his shots.

THREE IMPORTANT BUCKEYES

KYLE YOUNG
All due to the lack of depth on the interior, Young will show up in this section a lot this year. He's just 6-foot-8 and 225 pounds, but he's the starting five man with the Buckeyes this year. On Wednesday, he'll be charged with matchup up with Broome, who'll have an edge on him in both the height and weight categories.

DUANE WASHINGTON JR.
Washington dropped the dagger on UMass Lowell on Sunday, reminding everybody of his fearlessness when he rises to shoot with the game on the line. But imagine if he made his open 3-pointers earlier in the game and didn't allow the game to get so close. One of these days, Washington will put it all together – 3-point makes, 2-point efficiency, quality defense and good decision-making as a ball-handler – and it'll be a sight to behold.

CJ WALKER
Two games into the season, Walker hasn't been as efficient of a point guard as the Buckeyes need. He's averaged 11.5 points, but he's done so while shooting 33.3 percent from the field and missing all three 3-pointers. He does have a 5.5-to-2 assist-to-turnover ratio, but Holtmann said he needs to see more from Walker as the guy who's supposed to initiate Ohio State's offense.

"CJ's going to be fine. I'm not worried about CJ Walker in the least," Holtmann said. "He's hungry to grow and improve from one game to the next. But I think his ability to kind of lead our team at the point of attack on both ends is critical. Tomorrow will be an opportunity to kind of show that and do a better job of that."

Morehead was destroyed by a fairly average UK team, so I doubt this one will be remotely close.

Remember the Bucks beating Illinois State by 27? They beat UMass Lowell by 10, same as the Bucks.

Morehead is going to zone us after seeing how effective it was for UML. Let's hope we made some adjustments.
