I really think Brax, the O-line, and LBers will be just fine.

For me it is more consistent play from:

1) the WRs (a lot fewer dropped passes)
2) DL pass rushers (more pressure in their QB)
3) the special teams (get a few big plays and don't give up any)

I would just like to slightly add my .02 to this and just say id like more consistent play from our dbs, especially at the S position (mainly bryant, though I love watching him play, he can be frustrating at times too)

Mine;

1) Show up..........The schedule is ridiculously soft
2) Miller's passing improvement and the influx of play makers are the same concept to me.
3) Outscore teams until the defense can come along (did I mention the softer than Brady Hoke's back fat schedule that will allow for this?)

To steal from Corso, my biggest "not so fast my friend" is the defense. I don't think the majority of folks I see posting about 2013 are giving enough consideration to how entirely possible a complete monkey fucking a football fiasco is on that side of the field next year.

1.) Stick'em or catching drills for the receivers. You can't tell me this didn't affect Braxton's decision making and how soft/hard he through the ball.

2.) Sure tackling. This happens and teams score 1/2 the points if not less than they did each game.

3.) Stay healthy

1. Front seven on D. Our greatest chance to get upset this season is if their inexperience costs us a game early.
2. Braxton's development. If the front seven doesn't let us down we find ourselves contending for the NC with last year's Miller. A much improved Miller makes that NC game interesting.
3. Finding a punter.

Finding just 3 keys is hard for 2013...so I'll put n my #4 which has been alluded to in other posts: the front 4 and back 4 need to hide the mid field weakness which means the back 4 JUST NEED TO TACKLE. If ever there was a year we didn't need the huge hits and just solid tackling it would be this year.

1) Defense...way too many big plays...if teams are gonna get touchdowns...at least make them drive it down the field on us...tackle fill up the gaps

2)Offense...start fast...keep the foot on the gas pedal...get the ball to the guys with the speed...love our tight ends going vertical...keep that up..getting Marshall and Wilson ready for big ten play...

3)Team...bigger target on our back now...the team has to have an edge...can you go 2 undefeated seasons in a row....HUGE expectations by Buckeye Nation...

1.) I'll take a slightly different approach and say that the corner spot opposite Roby will be a big deal. That side of the field will be seeing a lot of action, because I don't see teams consistently wanting to attack Roby. Some highly touted names here, but production trumps promise.

2.) No getting around the middle backer question. Having Shazier next to whoever wins the spot will help, but until I hear Meyer say that he has a "grown-ass man" there, it will be a concern.

3.) Someone mentioned pass rushers, and while that is a very big issue, let's hope that the D-line can hold their own against the run. At the very least, make the opponent one dimensional.

Bonus: I don't really give a damn who punts, but it would be nice to not have to cringe every time the Bucks have to kick. Not sure if Coombs or Urban will be handling the punt protection, but whoever posts a video of Coombs after an opponent blocked punt will be repped accordingly.

1. Someone other than Carlos Takes the pressure off Braxton via the running game. Either Marshall/Zeke/Wilson need to make a move to provide the offense someone else than can hit the home run from 50+ yards out.

2. Defensive Line. I know we have tons of potential along the line but can our young defensive line keep lineman off our LB's? If the DT's in Schutt, Washington, and Bennett when he moves inside have big years I think we'll be improved along the front.

3.WR's reliability. I like what Philly did for us last year but Devin Smith drove me crazy by pulling in big plays but then dropping first down completions to kill drives. If someone emerges from a talented but unproven core of young players to make defenses account for them then that will open up even bigger gains in the ground game.

1. Defense. You don't give up 49 points to Indiana, and then lose all 4 guys on the defensive line, and not be worried. I hear some of the young guys who got some playing time last year (Washington and Spence, to name the only two I know) are supposed to be pretty good, but I'm still nervous.

2. Braxton Miller. I see a lot of you talking about how he needs to improve on making his reads and decision-making. And I certainly agree with that, but I want to add that I hope he doesn't forget who he is. What I'm saying is that up until now, he has mostly been a quick-to-run quarterback, and that has gotten the Buckeyes out of trouble pretty often. I don't want to see Miller become too afraid to run; if he has an easy 10-15 yards in front of him on 2nd and 5, for corn's sake, run it! I got the feeling last year in some of those games that he was too afraid to run, or maybe instructed not to run. I want him to become a pass-first quarterback, but don't forget about running the ball.

3. Special teams. Maybe they were better than I remember this past year. I seem to remember field goals, kick-off coverage, and punt coverage to be mediocre. I realize that field goals were handicapped by the fact that when the offense got going, they tended to get touchdowns, and didn't settle for many field goals, especially not close field goals. Meh - maybe this complaint is unfounded, but I'm still a Tressel-supporter, and special teams are extremely important, in my opinion, and there is always the possibility to improve.

1) Defense: Jax said it well enough, but to me this is the #1 thing. If I had to narrow it down, I would say they HAVE to find a solid MLB.

2) Improve during the week: ...because the schedule is so soft you cannot improve on Saturday. You can't sharpen steel with butter. For this team to be ready for a BCS game, and very possibly the NC game, they need to get better each week against each other and stay motivated while not being challenged on Saturdays. This is especially true for the defense (see #1). They cannot allow themselves to be satisfied with their performances on Saturdays. They need to judge themselves only by how they do against Braxton & co.

3) Win when you play badly: The week will come when a lesser team hangs around into the 4th qtr because the Buckeyes are unfocused. They need to find a way to win anyway.

My 3 keys (if we are talking about taking a legit shot at the title, not mowing over McNobody Central Tech throughout the season):

1) Defensive front 7: Your defensive front wins you games, period. Sure we have a good secondary but no DB in the country can cover consistently with little pass rush and a weak run defense. We have guys coming back that should make this a good DL but expectations need to be tempered somewhat. We just lost two of the best DL I've witness at OSU in Simon and Hankins, plus two very steady players in Williams and Goeble. Everyone likely knows I'm a diehard recruitnik and while these guys look great on paper, we are asking new guys to fill big shoes and somewhat familiar faces to embrace a much bigger role. Bennett is the only proven commodity on an every-down basis and health is an issue. Hale has experience to his name but hasn't really shown much yet. Washington looked great but has only one game where he was an every down player. Spence can rush the passer but needs to work on his run defense and becoming an every down DE. Carter has massive potential but that's all it is right now. Miller needs to take a big step and at least graze the surface of the expectations he had coming in. Can Bosa, Hill, Price, etc. come in and contribute early? There is plenty of talent with just enough experience for this to be a very good front 4 rotation. However, lots of questions need answered before we know that.

As for the linebackers, obviously only Shazier is proven. Hopefully some of the toute LB class of 2012 (Perkins, C. Williams, Perry, and Perkins) can step up or one of the incoming Mitchell or Johnson can come up big. Unless Grant has the offseason of the century, I highly doubt he is the answer. In my eyes, we only really need two guys to step up...I see the Star being on the field alot, whether that be C. Brown, Bell, or Bogard. Regardless, I do not see this group as becoming spectacular this year, but they do need to be solid. Shazier will make the big plays if our DL can hold up their end and the other 1-2 guys need to make tackles and play their 1/11th.

2) Braxton's progression: Obviously needs to progress mentally and make better reads. This offense is going to be mamouth on the run. The offensive line flat out blows the running lanes open...best returning run blocking unit in the country imo. Hyde blew up last year and should continue to be great for us. Hall will be back and he can do some serious damage, plus Rod looks special if he just holds onto the ball. Plus I feel Dunn be can be really good if called upon and coaches raved about Ball. Now all that is well and good but we need an improved passing attack to really have a dynamic offense. This offense will need to carry the team and that is a rarity here at Ohio State. Braxton will have a serious arsenal of weapons this year (especially with adding Marshall, Wilson, Cory Smith, Baugh, and EzE to Devin Smith, Philly, Vannett, and Thomas...oh and Braxton as a runner) but Brax MUST get them the ball. Braxton doesn't need to be an all-world passer to make this happen, but he does need to be effective enough in his reads to keep the defense guessing. This means he must improve substantially here.

3) Leadership: Behind every championship there is tremendous leadership (see '02). Simply put, Simon is impossible to replace. However, I do think there are enough high-character individuals on this team to lead us to a championship. Mewhort and Devin Smith need to step up on offense and Shazier/Bennett/Barnett/Roby on defense. The talent is there but much of it is young and needs guidance.
