Donovan doesn't enjoy milestone

Winningest coach in UF history isn't happy about sloppy victory.

By MICHAEL DIROCCO, The Times-Union

GAINESVILLE - Billy Donovan broke a clipboard, then a school record.
The Florida men's basketball coach shattered the clipboard during a second-half timeout tirade because he was upset with the Gators' defensive performance and energy level. But even with what he termed a poor outing in those areas, fifth-ranked Florida still beat Stetson 88-67 on Wednesday night.
The victory in front of 11,827 at the O'Connell Center was Donovan's 236th with the Gators, moving him past Norm Sloan and into sole possession of the school record.

The Stetson game filled up pretty quickly after tip off, so I think the OSU game will be full up. It's about time, since the basketball team pretty much gets ignored down here. If you do drive up, I recommend University Avenue by the swamp restaurant for your scalper hunt.

Horford to miss Buckeyes game with ankle sprain

FOXSports.com

Billy Donovan and the Florida Gators will be the ones short-handed on Saturday when the defending champions face Ohio State.

Florida's leading scorer and rebounder Al Horford will miss the game with a sprained ankle.

Rest of article: http://msn.foxsports.com/cbk/story/6294794

Losing to Florida with Horford (arguably their best player) out of the lineup would be quite a blow; much like it would have been for UNC to lose to us without Oden. Granted, we have to play at UF, but still, I think this game is a little more important now. If we drop this game, we at least have to beat Tennessee, otherwise our non-conference wins are pretty much uniformly unimpressive (thought Kent looked good taking Duke to the wire . . . but the Dukies are so overrated this year it's disgusting).

If it comes down to one shot, who takes it for us? I gotta think the ball is in Daequan's hand at this point. Either him or Ron Lewis. Those are our two best offensive weapons and both can shoot and create their own shot. I also have confidence in Mike Conley Jr. creating off an Oden pick and roll. Anyone else's thoughts?

Either of those two would be good or maybe Greg Oden, he appears to be a good shot also. I think I would rather have him slam dunking it rather than chancing a 3.

No coach worth his salt would let Oden get a dunk in a must-score situation. They'd simply foul and make him shoot left-handed FTs. Of course, Greg is so strong that it's difficult to foul him hard enough to keep him from putting it up and in, but still . . . I'd foul him before he made his move in a case like that.

Gators lose center for Buckeyes game

Al Horford's sore ankle will prevent matchup with OSU's Greg Oden

By Marla Ridenour

Beacon Journal sportswriter

When Ohio State basketball coach Thad Matta told Florida's Billy Donovan in July that the Buckeyes' 7-foot freshman center, Greg Oden, might not be back from right wrist surgery for their game Saturday, Donovan offered to reschedule.
``Billy was all for it; he wanted to go against Greg,'' Matta said. ``That says a lot about who he is as a person and a coach.''
The fact that Donovan and Matta couldn't find an open date in February and get a switch worked out because of conference conflicts now benefits OSU.

OSU, Florida take to court on Saturday

Friday, December 22, 2006
By Todd Porter REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER

When Billy Donovan called Thad Matta this summer, he had no clue their roles would be reversed. Or that Saturday afternoon?s game between defending national champion Florida and No. 3 Ohio State would be about more than just basketball. Less than three weeks before the schools play for football?s national championship, they?ll stoke the pregame hype with a nationally televised basketball game Saturday. Tipoff is 4 p.m.

OHIO STATE INSIDER

OSU wary Gators' Horford won't play

Friday, December 22, 2006 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- Florida coach Billy Donovan said Thursday that leading scorer and rebounder Al Horford, the 6-10 inside presence expected to guard Ohio State 7-footer Greg Oden, won't play Saturday when the Buckeyes visit Gainesville, Fla.
Ohio State doesn't really believe that.
"I know about tough breaks," said Oden, who missed the first seven games while recovering from surgery on his right wrist. "These types of games you want to play in, so I'm guessing he's going to try to strap up and play anyway."

Two-sport success boosts Buckeyes, Gators
Friday, December 22, 2006

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ? College football shapes the contour of Florida and frames the landscape of Ohio State.
The oblong ball is king at both schools, but that doesn?t mean roundball can?t realize a royalty of its own. Florida and Ohio State each are achieving that rare daily double: two-sport supremacy. The Gators won the 2006 NCAA basketball tournament and their football program is one victory from collecting a national championship. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, won football?s national championship in 2002 and are a potential Final Four contender in basketball.

No Horford? Gators will have hands full
Friday, December 22, 2006

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Florida coach Billy Donovan was going to have to gamble against Greg Oden even before he knew he wouldn?t have one of his blue chips. He?ll have to risk a little more now.
The question is, will Ohio State make him pay? The third-ranked Buckeyes? ability to make open perimeter shots could determine whether they can beat No. 5 Florida on Saturday in Gainesville, Fla., because the Gators will doubleteam the 7-foot Oden at least some of the time.
