#4 Ohio State 107, VMI 69 (Final)

Fun game, but talk about alley-ball.

OSU has remarkable athleticism, but lots of problems with the pressure in the first half and tons of silly mistakes. Nothing that time and coaching wont cure.

Nice to see the new walk ons and nice to see Ivan the Terrible get it in gear - hope it lasts.

Lot's of running tonight. Loyola could well get the W tomorrow.

And did the students get the place rocking or what?

I think I'll go with "or what".

No more excuses. Support your team or don't. This is an embarrasement and an affront to true fans. Don't know how it showed up on tv, but I will take a picture at the start of the next game before folks from higher up start filtering down. It is ludicrous to see entire sections completely empty.

If there is anything that needs to be "one and done" this season it is the new student seating. Shame.

Overall it was a tale of some up and down basketball.

We started off strong hitting our shots, rebounding, and playing good D. Then we went South when Butler went to the bench and the young guys turned the ball over some and VMI made some shots.

Overall VMI was not a bad team, I saw where they have been averaging 135/ game and I believe it. They jack up shots like crazy. It is kind of fun to watch actually.

Overall Cook played awesome tonite. His dunks, his ability to get to hole and his long range shooting.

Conley also had an awesome game. He had 7 assists in the first half. Not sure how many he ended up with. I also saw him use his right hand around the basket on a layup. That ones for you JO. He is so smooth out there and can break a press with ease, but at times needs to be a little stronger with the ball.

Butler had a nice shooting nite and he is really going to have a good year if he can get those open shots like he got tonite. It is also nice to have him and Conley on the court together to be able to break the press and run the break.

Lewis, Twig, and Harris what you have seen is what you got. I wish that Harris would step in a couple times and take a 15 footer instead of those 3 balls b/c he is really struggling from out there. He did play solid aroudn the hoop at times tonite.

Hunter had another solid game with some good blocks and some nice finishes around the rim. I wouldnt be suprised to see him getting a majority of the minutes at the 5. Twig has really struggled so far.

Lighty he struggled keeping ahold of the ball at times tonite, but overall another solid effort from him. His stroke has really impressed me. I hope that he continues to hit those shots. I think a lot of it has to do with his awesome shot selection that he has.

As for the walk-ons, yes they are the student managers.

I was not able to see the Loyola game, but should be somewhat of a test for us. If we don't play at a high level they might give us all we can handle.

Man you are respectful poster, and I really like what you bring, but when is enough enough about this situation.

I do not believe the students were offered this game at a discount price. I also know that there was no emails sent to students about this tourney. If the students wanted to go they would have to pay the public price of $28. That is alot of money for a student to fork up for one game, especially if they have already bought the student package. Also if they wanted to attend all the games in the weekend that would be $87.

The students went form 1700 tickets sold last year to 6300 this year. Trust me when the games come that were in the packages the students will be there and out in full force.

Overall there was a pretty nice crowd there tonite.

when is enough enough about this situation.

It probably belongs in the lap of the ticket office for setting things up this way anyhow, but it looks real bad. You saw it.

That said, I'll back off. But I will post the picture.

I also meant to comment on Hunter. He was almost an afterthought in this class. Then there were rumors we might not have him. I don't know where we would be without him this season. Ivan lit it up late, but in the first half when he and Twigs were on the court it was not the same team. Hunter had 13 boards and 6 were offensive (in 24 minutes). Although tonight was anything but traditional box-out rebounding.

As you saw they didnt sell the end seats on either side. There were students that were scattered out through the crowd. I think those end seats were sold to the other teams crowds. Obviously there werent many of them there, but that was the situation for the Walsh game the other day and they filled the section.

Thanks for picking up the slack fella's. I am glad they turned it on in the second half. I also agree that by Sunday these boys will be ready to soak.

The young guys are as advertised and this is going to be a magical season.

I agree about the guys being ready to soak, but I think tomm nite is going to be the toughest game of the weekend.

I believe it will only help us. I hope we get challenged early and often. I believe thats exactly why we won a championship in football and the tournament in March is not for the weak of heart. If our boys become mentally tough with all of their talent, the sky's the limit. Adding Oden back later will just be icing then.

Saying wait til Oden gets back is already becoming redundant. Someone come up with and acronym or something.

Then it seems like the problem is administrative. The student seating plan should not apply to games outside the package in the future?

Newcomers play strong

Buckeyes run for win in second half; game sets record for points at arena

By Rusty Miller

Associated Press

COLUMBUS - Daequan Cook scored 22 points and No. 7 Ohio State's Thad Five recruiting class opened the season with a record-setting 107-69 victory over VMI on Friday night in the opening round of the BCA Classic.
It was a spotty game for both teams, particularly so for the Buckeyes, with two freshmen and a junior-college transfer in the starting lineup.
Cook, who came off the bench, also had nine rebounds to lead the freshmen, with classmates David Lighty adding 11 points and Mike Conley Jr. totaling 10 assists. Othello Hunter, the transfer, had eight points and 13 rebounds.
Among the veterans, Jamar Butler added 18 points, Ivan Harris 17 and Ron Lewis 15 for the Buckeyes, who have one starter back (Butler) from last year's team that went 26-6 and won the Big Ten title.
The 107-point performance was an Ohio State record at Value City Arena, breaking by three points the mark set a year ago in a win over Penn State.
The biggest-profile Buckeye -- 7-foot center Greg Oden, the prized center of coach Thad Matta's acclaimed recruiting class -- is recovering from wrist surgery that will likely sideline him until the first of the year.
The teams combined for 81 3-point attempts in a wild, wide-open game. The Keydets were 11-for-47. The Buckeyes were 13-of-34.
Ahead 56-49 early in the second half, the Buckeyes finally broke free with a 16-5 run. Hunter got it going with a tip-in and Butler and Lewis each added 3-pointers during the spurt, Lewis scoring five points and Harris four.
They later added a 19-0 run that featured a high-flying tomahawk dunk by Cook, ending the game on a 30-8 run.
The Buckeyes advance to meet Loyola of Chicago in tonight's second round.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Greg Oden never left the bench and No. 7 Ohio State still put on a show.

Daequan Cook scored 22 points and the Buckeyes' Thad Five recruiting class opened the season with a record-setting 107-69 victory over VMI on Friday night in the first round of the BCA Classic.

"Our guys played against some guys they'll be watching on TV before long," VMI coach Duggar Baucom said. "He (Ohio State coach Thad Matta) has a stable of horses."

It was a spotty game for both teams, particularly so for the Buckeyes with two freshmen and a junior-college transfer in the starting lineup.

"I don't know if I've coached in a game like that, where offensively you're basically making plays the entire night," Matta said as he ran his record to 7-0 in openers as a head coach.

The Buckeyes advance to meet Loyola of Chicago _ a 68-57 winner over Princeton _ in Saturday night's second round.

The 107 points was an Ohio State record at Value City Arena, breaking by three points the mark set a year ago in a victory over Penn State. It was the Buckeyes' highest total since a 121-96 win over George Mason in early 1995. The Buckeyes also tied an arena record with their 43 field goals.

In other Top 25 games, it was: No. 1 Florida 79, Samford 54; No. 11 Alabama 96, Jackson St. 65; No. 13 Texas A&M 81, Prairie View 49; No. 15 Boston College 86, New Hampshire 47; No. 16 Marquette 76, Hillsdale 66; No. 18 Connecticut 53, Quinnipiac 46; No. 20 Syracuse 83, St. Francis, N.Y. 51; No. 21 Texas 92, Chicago St. 66; No. 23 Georgia Tech 83, Elon 49; No. 24 Nevada 85, Alaska-Anchorage 62; No. 25 Tennessee 83, Middle Tennessee 52.

Cook also had nine rebounds to lead the freshmen. His 22 points is the most by an Ohio State freshman in an opener, eclipsing Michael Redd's record of 21 in 1997.

"I felt comfortable," said Cook, who hit his first seven shots from the field. "I let the game come to me. Coach Matta and I talked about the fact that I was rushing a lot of shots and drawing a lot of charges. I tried to relax and let the game come to me."

Classmates David Lighty added 11 points and Mike Conley Jr. _ son of the 1992 Olympic gold medalist in the triple jump _ had 10 assists.

"That was a real good test, especially the way they played a pressing defense the whole game," Conley said. "That kind of defense causes a lot of turnovers and for me to have only two turnovers shows I took care of the ball."

Othello Hunter, a transfer, had eight points and 13 rebounds.

Among the veterans, Jamar Butler added 18 points, Ivan Harris 17 and Ron Lewis 15 for the Buckeyes, who have one starter back (Butler) from last year's team that went 26-6 and won the Big Ten title.

The 7-foot Oden, the prize center of Matta's acclaimed recruiting class, is recovering from wrist surgery that will likely sideline him until Jan. 1.

Reggie Williams had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Fred Robinson 16 points and Matt Murrer 15 for the Keydets.

The teams combined for 81 3-point attempts in a wild, wide-open game. The Keydets were 11-for-47 to set a school mark for attempts. The Buckeyes were 13-of-34.

Ahead 56-49 early in the second half, the Buckeyes finally broke free with a 16-5 run. Hunter got it going with a tip-in and Butler and Lewis each added 3-pointers during the spurt.
They later added a 19-0 run that featured a high-flying tomahawk dunk by Cook, the Buckeyes ending the game on a 30-8 run.

Cook scores 22 points, No. 4 Ohio St. opens with victory

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- After his postgame remarks, VMI coach Duggar Baucom asked about the big showdown between Michigan and Ohio State in football next Saturday.

When a reporter joked that Ohio State was a basketball school, Baucom deadpanned, "It was tonight."

Daequan Cook scored 22 points and Ohio State's Thad Five recruiting class opened the season with a record-setting 107-69 victory over VMI on Friday night in the opening round of the BCA Classic.

"Our guys played against some guys they'll be watching on TV before long," Baucom said. "He [Ohio State coach Thad Matta] has a stable of horses."

It was a spotty game for both teams, particularly so for the Buckeyes (No. 4 ESPN/USAToday, No. 7 AP) with two freshmen and a junior-college transfer in the starting lineup.

"I don't know if I've coached in a game like that, where offensively you're basically making plays the entire night," Matta said as he ran his record to 7-0 in openers as a head coach.

Cook, who came off the bench, also had nine rebounds to lead the freshmen. His 22 points is the most ever by an Ohio State freshman in an opener, breaking Michael Redd's record of 21 in 1997.

"I felt comfortable," Cook said. "I let the game come to me. Coach Matta and I talked about the fact that I was rushing a lot of shots and drawing a lot of charges. I tried to relax and let the game come to me."

Classmates David Lighty added 11 points and Mike Conley Jr. -- son of the 1992 Olympic gold medalist in the triple jump -- totaled 10 assists.

"That was a real good test, especially the way they played a pressing defense the whole game," Conley said. "That kind of defense causes a lot of turnovers and for me to have only two turnovers shows I took care of the ball."

Hunter, the transfer, had eight points and 13 rebounds.

"Coach told us we didn't do a good job rebounding in the two exhibition games," the 6-foot-9 forward said. "He made us work on it, box out and go get the ball."

Among the veterans, Jamar Butler added 18 points, Ivan Harris 17 and Ron Lewis 15 for the Buckeyes, who have one starter back [Butler] from last year's team that went 26-6 and won the Big Ten title.

The 107 points was an Ohio State record at Value City Arena, breaking by three points the mark set a year ago in a victory over Penn State. It was the biggest production from a Buckeyes team since a 121-96 win over George Mason in early 1995. The Buckeyes also tied an arena record with their 43 field goals.

The biggest-profile Buckeye -- 7-foot center Greg Oden, the prize center of Matta's acclaimed recruiting class -- is recovering from wrist surgery that will likely sideline him until the first of the year.

Oden strolled out to the bench shortly before the opening tip wearing tan pants, a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up and a towel around his neck. He wore a scarlet, gray and black brace on his right wrist.

"Honestly, we had to play that way," Matta said. "Then at about the 15-minute mark of the second half, they weren't coming as quickly behind us and we had really good spacing. We told our players, 'Go. Keep attacking them."

Ahead 56-49 early in the second half, the Buckeyes finally broke free with a 16-5 run. Hunter got it going with a tip-in and Butler and Lewis each added 3-pointers during the spurt, Lewis scoring five points and Harris four.

They later added a 19-0 run that featured a high-flying tomahawk dunk by Cook, the Buckeyes ending the game on a 30-8 run.

"They're as advertised," Baucom said. "Their defense was much better in the second half. Every shot was contested. They started playing Big Ten basketball and got real physical with us."

The Buckeyes advance to meet Loyola of Chicago -- a 68-57 winner over Princeton -- in Saturday night's second round. The Keydets play Princeton.

The Buckeyes led 51-43 after a ragged first half in which VMI squeezed off 50 shots. Cook hit his first seven shots from the field.

"I still had some butterflies in my stomach, since it was my first college game," Cook said.

It sure didn't look like it.

Sounds pretty impressive. VMI tries to shoot you off the floor, not surprising it was high scoring. I think the young kids can take three games in a row, they've got plenty of energy, they're young!!!!. I haven't seen any pictures yet, how did the uniforms look? Does anyone know if the gray ones came in yet?
