#4 Ohio State 80, Findlay 57 (Final)

I read a quote by Clark Kellogg once where he said that rebounding was not about size or talent - it was about desire. The most impressive stat from last nights game IMO was 8 rebounds by Cook.

Cook's ability was shown all over the court last nite. D and O and he does have the ability to go up and get the boards.

We are going to need all 5 guys to rebound right now.

I like how they started off the exhibition season with a team like Findlay. I know that the Bucks started the game a little sluggishly, but Findlay finished last year with a 25-4 record and were the #1 team in the nation at the D2 level a couple times during the season, so they aren't complete scrubs. So it was good for our young guys to get their feet wet against somebody that would definitely play hard against them but not offer up a legit chance at pulling the upset.

Yeah Findlay played us toe to toe in the first half, but we just showed our athleticism and shut them down in the second half. They will have another successful season in D-2.

The outcome of the game was about what most of us expected. The young guys made an impact but their are areas that need to improve. Its a good starting point. Its obvious that this team is very athletic and can score, but the two areas that need a great deal of improvement is team defense and rebounding.

I just wonder if Oden was playing, would have Findlay scored 30 points the entire game?

Charles Barkley has said the same thing. Sir Charles claims that "blocking out" is a waste of time and effort, that what the Windex man must do is spend his time figuring out where the ball will go if not through the hoop and get to that point with strong intent. Cook did that very well last night. A very impressive debut for the young man.

garbage, that being said you dont block out necessarily to get the rebound. some of the best rebounders ive ever seen didnt get many rebounds but they checked thier man everytime...

but as a team they got outrebounded. i didnt see the game so i cant really comment much on the game. our ability to rebound the ball was the teams weakness and eventual downfall last year. this year we essentially have one big man, two 4s and a tweener to play the four and five. how this will is dealt with will be interesting. i heard they went small lighty and cook at the 3/4 and went on a run early last night, that will be a lot more difficult against a bigger team ala unc, uf, tenn, and half of the big ten teams.

1. Charles Barkley speaking on rebounding is not "garbage;" he knows more about rebounding than anyone posting here.

2. The comment about "best rebounders not getting many rebounds" is as counterintuitive a comment as I have read on these boards.

All this being said, rebounding is not a strength of this team. I think we safely can agree on that. But Cook will, I think, be a very good rebounder for his size, much like Sullinger was last year.

very good insight and basically the same thing I am thinking at this point. Without Oden on the floor we are at a distinct disadvantage size wise inside. This team will have to dedicate themselves to rebounding and getting good position inside the paint.

Not to get to far off the game last night, but I have to chime in with my opinion.....Obviously, Barkley has grabbed enough rebounds to know what it takes, but to just discount "blocking out" and say it is a waste of time, is flat out wrong, maybe in the NBA where they play no defense. In the college game, "blocking out" or "boxing out" is essential to rebounding and team defense. If it is a "waste of time" like Sir Charles states, why does every coach in basketball stress this fundamental? I find his comment comical and I wish I knew the context in which it was said.

If you ever have the chance to watch a practice by Coach Matta, I guarantee you will see various drills focusing on "blocking out".
