#4 Ohio State 82, San Francisco 60 (Final)

Canton

No Oden still no OSU problem

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

COLUMBUS San Francisco Coach Jessie Evans looked at the box score from his team?s 82-60 loss to No. 4 Ohio State on Monday night and shook his head.
As impressed as he was with the Buckeyes, he said he could see a looming problem for them.
?They?ve still got another guy to add,? he said. ?He may mess up their chemistry.?
Evans was joking about how good Ohio State could be once it gets heralded big man Greg Oden, sidelined with an injury.
Without him, the Buckeyes are plenty imposing.
Mike Conley Jr. and Jamar Butler combined for 16 assists with just two turnovers, and Daequan Cook added 20 points off the bench to lead the Buckeyes, who didn?t even need the 7-foot Oden to outrebound the Dons, 46-31.
?I don?t know ? was Oden out there today?? Evans cracked. ?We couldn?t seem to get anything inside.?
Cook shot 8 of 11 from the field to match his average for points. Ron Lewis added 15 points and Conley scored 12.
Conley, a freshman, added nine assists and six rebounds with two turnovers. He now has 33 assists and 12 turnovers this season while directing the Buckeyes? offense. His partner in the backcourt, Butler, had seven assists without a turnover. Othello Hunter added nine points and 10 rebounds.
?We?re trying to get those guys to understand that we?re a little different team than the last two years here,? Coach Thad Matta said. ?We?ve got some depth. We?re trying to get guys to understand their roles.?
Armando Surratt scored 15 points and Antonio Kellogg and Manny Quezada had 11 apiece for the Dons (2-2). Jay Watkins added 10 rebounds.
The loudest roar of the night came midway through the second half on Butler?s crisp alley-oop pass from near midcourt that Cook controlled with one hand over defender Jesse Byrd for a dunk that put the Buckeyes ahead 54-38.

Nothing sad about this one.
Nearly three years to the day after former coach Jim O?Brien put pen to paper late in a disgusting loss at San Francisco ? printing "This is sad" on it, showing it to officials and getting ejected ? the Ohio State men?s basketball team made the Dons sorry they didn?t buy themselves out of the return game.
Freshmen Mike Conley Jr. and Daequan Cook sparked runs in each half last night to lead the Buckeyes to an 82-60 victory in Value City Arena. Cook scored 20 points off the bench and Conley and guard Jamar Butler combined for 18 points, 16 assists and only two turnovers as Ohio State (5-0) turned a difficult start into a runaway win.
"We?re not where we want to be yet," Butler said, "but if we keep working hard in practice, keep playing within the system, I think we?ll be fine."
Ron Lewis had 15 points for Ohio State. San Francisco (2-2), which made the long trip east for only this game, was led by guard Armondo Surratt with 15 points.
Ohio State missed 11 of its first 14 shots and led by only three points with 6 1 /2 minutes left in the first half before giving itself a cushion with a 14-2 run in less than three minutes. The Buckeyes forced three turnovers and two missed shots by the Dons, and Conley scored five points and assisted on seven.
"The defense started generating some more opportunities for us and got us maybe a couple more easy baskets, which I think relaxed us a little bit," coach Thad Matta said.
"We felt like we wanted to move the ball and get San Francisco making decisions defensively. We had that at times tonight. Other times ? we weren?t running very good offense. We?ve got to continue to embrace our system and keep striving to get better."
Conley began the run with a reverse layup off a feed from Butler. Conley then rebounded a Dons miss, pushed the ball upcourt and sent a one-handed, crosscourt bounce pass from right of the key to Butler on the left wing. Butler made the three-point shot.
Conley helped again on the second of two Daequan Cook baskets, which bracketed a three-point play by Conley.
Conley?s third assist came after he rebounded again, ran the ball to the other end and dished a wraparound pass to Matt Terwilliger, whose layup finished the run and gave the Buckeyes a 38-23 lead with 3:41 remaining. They led 45-29 at halftime.
Conley finished the half with 10 points, five assists and four rebounds.
"We came out and played a lot harder and a lot tougher defensively" in the final seven minutes of the first half, Conley said. "That sparked our run and we got a lot of open shots from there. We made some big plays."
San Francisco got as close as 49-38 in the first four minutes of the second half before eight straight points by Cook stuck a fork in any comeback hopes crossing the Dons? minds. In less than a minute, Cook made two three-pointers around a leaping, one-handed catchand-slam in transition.
Ohio State built its lead to as much as 30 points before the Dons cut into it in the final 10 minutes.
"They play well together," San Francisco coach Jessie Evans said of the Buckeyes. "They seem to have a lot of fun together. They seem to enjoy their roles and know their roles ? that compensates for their lack of experience.
"They?re going to be good. And they?ve got another guy to add. He may mess up their chemistry, though."
It was one of the few times Evans smiled all night.

Ok where to begin.

We started off a little slow, but when we took off we took off.

Cook is playing amazing bball. I hope that he can keep that up all year. That dunk he had off the Butler pass was probably the single best dunk I have ever seen from a buckeye bball player. It really got the team goin and then we really put them game far out of reach.

I will say that everyone is playing well. The only person struggling a little bit i Twig, but I think that he will be ok when Oden comes back.

Really impressed with Harris. He is playing like he knows it is his last year. Sometimes he tries to force some things on O, when we don't need it, but we heats up from the outside he can e deadly. He has also stepped up his physicalness and his rebounding.

Butler has the best 3 point shot on the teaam, and I am waiting for it when he actually starts asserting himself on offense.

We have 3 guys that can put up 20 pts on any given nite, Cook, Lewis, and Butler. I don't envision teams matching up with us very well at all, but A team like GTown last year could present us problems until Oden is back to full stregth...

Treg Lee might have a little something to say about that...

My random thoughts:

As Conley goes, so goes this team right now. That will obviously change when Oden comes back and opens thigs up not only for Conley but for everyone else. Butler still seems more comfortable running the point, but when he does play off the ball, Conley makes sure to keep him involved. Butler just really seemed to be forcing things in the first 10 minutes. As did Harris when he first came off the bench (missed at least his first four shots). Harris is still spending way too much time on the perimeter for me. Does he not realize how much it will open up his outside game if he were to start off a game but showing something down low? David Lighty has thoroughly impressed me with his defense and athleticism. His pass off the drive to Twig sliding to the basket was beautiful. As were his couple of blocks. How Conley only got credit for one steal is beyond me. Looking at the box score, seeing that Cook palyed 21 minutes and Butler played 33, and having watched Jamar's stroke get away from him towards the end of the game makes me wish Cook would have played a couple minutes more and given Butler a little more time to rest. Glad to see the rebounding improve against a team that was averaging 34 boards a game. To pull down 41 and hold them to 27 made me very happy. How long before Conley has a triple double?

I have to agree with everything you said. Give Jamar some time to adjust to playing off the ball...He will be fine.

I also agree that Harris was trying to go one on one and force stuff early when he was in the game.

I do like the as Conley goes so goes this team.

My quick observations (unfortunately this was the first game I saw in its entirety):

* Cook is a sharp shooter... my favorite player right now
* Conley has really impressed me... much better than I thought he would be early in the season
* At times Harris is being more physical than he was last year... he has been to the free throw lines more time this year already than the entire season last year
* Butler has looked as expected so far this year and seems to pick up his game a bit when Conley is on the floor with him
* Hunter can be a force to be reconed with on the boards, especially once Oden gets in the lineup.
* Twigs has put on some good weight and will be a good role player down the road... needs to hit the bunny shots!
* Lewis was Lewis, took charge when he needed to. His shot looks a little better this year also.
* The team defense is pretty impressive as well, they play very well together, especially since half the team is new.

I'm sure many of the other top programs will say this same thing: With all the weapons on this team, how are they all going to be guarded?

Not that I'm complaining, but what's up with MASN (Mid Atlantic Sports Network)? They showed the Eastern Ky game, last night's game and are going to show Friday's game. OSU alum must be the program director. Hopefully they keep this up. Another reason why I'm glad I purchased the Directv sports pack to get ESPNU for the Indiana game.

he played with jim jackson...

you guys have hit most of the points,
this team still needs to work on the glass.
twigs is a 4, ive said it all along. he can steal you minutes at the five but is out of pos there.
cooks defensive, if you can call it that for stretches...
lewis and his defense...
conley is really slinggin the ball around, will that work against bigger more atheletic teams?
what will the transition with oden be, will it be seamless as some are predicting or will it be a rough chemistry issue...
