I just installed 64 bit windows XP on a computer and it is running REALLY SLOW!!!! I don't know whats going on. I thought i heard it wouldn't be a problem running the old 32 bit software on the system either but that isn't working.

Any help out there? Can anyone at least point me to a good web site to help me out?

Thanks a lot!

A common problem with the 64 bit edition is that there isn't much support out there for it. Not many use it, so companies don't bother to build support for it.

Check your drivers, especially the video drivers.

It was released in April, and was completely worthless up until about the past month or so. I just installed it again on both my laptop and my desktop machines, and it is running great. I did have some problems with drivers here and there, but after some searching, was able to fix my problem.

Do you have any problems with your sound? crackling, etc? I am running several 32 bit apps, with no prob, but I am sure there are some that can cause problems. Some of the messengers for example. I use trillian, but was reading a site that said aim and yahoo messenger are problematic on a 64 bit OS.

I have all drivers installed, all my programs installed and functioning. Am even able to burn my lightscribe labels and such now. Also have a couple 64 bit games installed, and you should see those bitches

Gotta love that, no? That is like not being able to get a line of credit, because of lack of credit. If companies would support it, more would use it. But you are right, we'll never learn

This is one where I think Linux wins. The open source community is good at writing programs that people want. People that market their software "don't have a big enough crowd" yet. I think they would have enough people to sell their products to. Like BM said, if they'd make it, then people would buy it.

You are very right. It's more like the open source crews ENJOY supporting or something

If linux was more simple, even half as difficult, I think it would be givin Windows a run for it's money. But I am a computer nerd, or whatever you wanna call it, and it's too difficult for me to use. With that in mind, how the hell do they expect Harold and Maude to use it?

I am not necessarily a Windows fanboy or anthing, but it works, and makes sense.

But that is for another thread of course :)

It's just not that simple:

You need an x64 instruction set to get the true performance. An Itanium based machine will not give you the desired results.

Additionally, the 64 bit addressing is the real boon until apps are available that utilize the x64 instruction set. What that means is you can install much more memory than usual and apps/OS can actually use it.

And, wrt the linux thing, go Windows because Linux has no real competitive advantage except in Grid computing.
