A new way to crown the National Champion

So where's the NC for the SEC teams that beat LSU in 2004? They were the 2003 NC not USC.

In fact USC has only played the other best team at the end of a year once and they lost.

Their little dynasty is owed in large part to a vastly overrated OU team in 2003 and 2004. The BCS got them out of playing LSU and Auburn those 2 years.

So you discount SC's NC in 2004 because OU was "vastly overrated" in 2003 and 2004, but you don't hold that against 2003 LSU? It's sad when you can't even form an argument that is internally consistent.

Bottom line is that this thread is about the historical string of defeats going back to the first football game.

Arguments about NC's in certain years aren't relevant to this thread.

Hmm, so what you mean is, that when you get the trophy, whoever goes the next year you hand it to them?

Think more along the lines of boxing, without so much of the acting. The champion is Mike Tyson. He decides to fight Buster Douglas, and loses. Buster Douglas is now the champion.

Miami was champion at the end of the 2002 season. Ohio State beat them. Ohio State was the champion. Wisconsin then beat Ohio State. And so on...

What if, instead of crowning a national champion every year, we determine the current champion of college football by a title that is passed on from team to team. When you beat the current title holder, you become the title holder.

Some scUMer has stolen your idea and is pimping it over on Swamp Gas. What a tool! LINK

Since the first title in 11/24/1900, there are has been 245 title holders. The teams with the most titles are: USC (14), UCLA (11), Washington (11), Ohio State (8), Harvard (8), Alabama (8), and Michigan (8).

In terms of time, there has been 38,736 days that the title has been available since the first holder in the 1900s. USC holds the record with the most time with the trophy/belt (3,170 days or 8.18% of the time). Followed by: Harvard (2,247 days or 5.80%), Texas (1,592 days or 4.11%), Ohio State (1,573 days or 4.06%). Michigan is 14th with 803 days (or 2.07%).

After the Buckeyes beat Florida the will obviously pass up Texas. We can catch up to Harvard, if we win back-to-back championships and go undefeated until the middle of big ten season.

Of all the teams on this list of mythical football champions, Harvard is very near the bottom of who I'm worried about.
