<!-- template inline --><!-- insertinlineAd -->NORMAN, Okla. -- The NCAA on Tuesday notified Oklahoma that it had granted a medical hardship waiver to allow defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek to play a fifth season with the Sooners.

Dvoracek, a third-team All-American last season, was kicked off the team in September after he was involved in a fight at a Norman bar in which one of his high-school friends was injured.

Oklahoma last week applied for a medical hardship on Dvoracek's behalf, but it was denied by the Big 12 Conference. Upon appeal, the NCAA's reinstatement staff granted the waiver Monday.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops wouldn't say when Dvoracek would be reinstated to the team.

"We will not visit this situation until we're back in school for the second semester," Stoops said in a statement Tuesday.

To qualify for a medical hardship, a student-athlete must be unable to compete because of injury or illness for a portion of a season and have documentation from a medical doctor, according to NCAA bylaws.

It is against NCAA policy to discuss the specific illness under which a student-athlete qualifies, said Jennifer Kearns, associate director of public relations with the NCAA.

Since his dismissal from the team, Dvoracek has undergone anger-management and alcohol-related counseling.

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops dismissed Dvoracek from the team following a Sept. 12 incident at a Norman bar in which Matt Wilde, one of Dvoracek's high-school teammates, who spent several days in Norman Regional Hospital with a head injury.

Norman police said Wilde, 21, didn't want to pursue criminal charges.

Dvoracek, who was second on the team with seven sacks last season, had three tackles -- including one for a loss -- and one fumble recovery this season.

i think the ncaa has hit an all time low

a worthless thug that gets into fights with other players and is deservedly hurt as a result gets an extra year?

Which is as it should be. A primary purpose of college is to prepare young people for the next level. In professional sports worthless thugs is a growth industry.

DD's reinstatement is a total joke in my opinion. There's a group of Gooners on o-state.com right now trying to rationalize the NCAA's decision. Here's an example of their madness:

personally, i think its just karma for the baylor transfer decision last year. that decision allowed you to go from a top 20 team to a top 5 team in one fell stroke. this allows us to go from a top 20 team to a top 15+ team next year.
That's a REAL response from a REAL UO fan. Hard to imagine us folks here in Stillwater have to share a state with those morons, huh?

As I was saying on the USC board, I'm glad the NCAA now recognizes beating the crap out of somebody as a medical hardship. Next time I'm unprepared for an exam, I'll just beat the shit out of some old lady and tell the professor I had a medical emergency.

I enjoyed how OU fans claim that you don't get it, because you think the guy's a thug, and shouldn't be given an extra year.

Maybe we should've just suspended Irizarry for this year, and given him a redshirt for it. I sure we would be seen as "just givin the guy a second chance".:shake:

I wonder what he would have gotten if the guy died? Two extra years?
Is this the same for rape if the rapist would then get treated for mental disorders?
Wow. So basically his year out is rescinded.
This will go far in deterring behavior.

Dude, they're always like this. Its like, all the non-common-sense thinkers in Oklahoma became Sooner fans.

It's really sad.

You think you guys love Ohio State football??? The Oklahoma fans are crazy with it. I swear the suicide rate jumps here everytime OU loses. It's one thing to be a fanatic, but these jokers hinge their entire life and happiness on OU winning.

The late 90s was very fun here because they sucked and it was like the sun never rose here... lol.

But yes, they're okay with defending someone who has had 4 or 5 different violent incidents, one almost killing someone else.

OU FANS ARE OKAY WITH THAT AS LONG AS THEY WIN!!! Remember Switzer. He told his players "Do whatever the hell you want so long as you keep winning." He was okay with rapes, drugs, shootings, etc, as long as he kept winning.

Sad, really.

I know I'm bumping this but I have something that is too funny. A radio personality in Oklahoma had a hilarious quote about Bob Stoops leaving OU.

He said it was important for the state psyche that Stoops stay at OU and Oklahoma football be preserved at the current level.

Not a direct quote, but pretty close.

Not THAT is just too funny.
