Ad Aware Scan Question

LoKyBuckeye

I give up. This board is too hard to understand.
I'm using ad aware to scan my computer and it gets stuck on the file C:\\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\setup. It always gets stuck on this file and I have to shut it down using the task manager.... any suggestions?

I've never had this (or any other) problem with AdAware. Is it the scan that causes it, or is it the OOBE setup? Do you still need your setup? We don't have it on any of our machines. When I search for setup in OOBE, it isn't there. Maybe someone else, or several someones elses, can check their directory, see if they have setup, if not, you probably don't need it. If you don't need it, just delete that file.
Good luck!

I wouldn't delete it quite that fast-- OOBE = Out Of Box Experience. It was *probably* installed by a distributor (that is if you bought your computer through dell, hp, etc.). If you didn't buy from a distributor, then I would tend to think it's a directory you don't want. I second the vote for a reinstall of Ad-aware, and perhaps a run of ewido, or spy sweeper. Some folders/files also take a long time to scan, but I assume you waited a fair enough ammount of time before rebooting.

Not saying to delete it on a whim, just to start considering it. As I said, have others look at their directories, and see what there is to be seen.

I built my computer from scratch, it's a mishmash of parts from Ebay, Best Buy, Office Depot, Circuit City, and about 4 web stores. I installed Windows from a box from Staples, and for some reason, I don't have a setup file in my OOBE.

Hopefully, it is just a case of reinstalling AdAware.

May the computer gods smile upon you, LokyBuckeye!

I checked out my directory and I do have an oobe folder and there's lots of cool stuff in there that looks like it'd mess things up if i deleted it. So I wouldn't advise you deleting anything. Try downloading Microsoft Anti Spyware. I like it and it does its job.

Thanks for all the suggestions.... It is a Gateway computer w/XP so it is is from a distributer. I uninstalled the program but won't be able able to install it again until I get home today. I did run spy sweep and it went through the whole scan without getting stuck. Once I get it re-installed I'll see if it can get all the way through.
