Akron RB Dennis Kennedy (official thread)

It has been a one hell of a long time since I signed my letter of intent and no I did not keep it. Maybe exhawg has his.
I don't remember getting or keeping a copy of it. Anyway I have no clue where any of that stuff is.
As far as I know once you sign a LOI the school has to give you a schollie unless you don't qualify. I can easily see how DK's father's death could have made him tank the spring and not qualify. He could have failed required classes or his grades might have fallen below what he needed with his test score (no idea what he got on the test's). No matter what if he didn't qualify OSU can't give him a schollie. Even if he went Prop 48 he has to pay his way.

OK, a new day, a new perspective on life, and my final (maybe) post on the subject.

When a S-A receives signs a LOI from any University it is contingent on 2 things; first that they make it through the NCAA clearinghouse, secondly they make it trough the University admissions office. If the S-A does not make it through either one, the LOI is voided.

Making it through the Clearinghouse, is pretty straight forward. First, you have a published list of classes that are acceptable as core credits. The list (48H) actually comes from the High School or school district and is sent to the clearinghouse in Iowa. In Dennis' case, he did have an initial problem, as the school district did not include Chemistry I as an acceptable course for the clearinghouse. We had to go back to the Broward County School district and have them agree that it was a mistake that Chemistry was not on the list, then get them to contact the clearinghouse and update the list of acceptable classes. As Dennis had a B in Chemistry, this corrected any clearinghouse issues since his ACT/GPA ratios were well in the range required.

The second issue, is OSU admissions. As with most Universities, the exact requirements are not published. They do publish what the averages were for previous years. They also take into consideration what "additional abilities" the student brings to the University, and can weight these intangible items in any manor they see fit. OSU admissions came back and said Dennis was not eligible. The Football office came back and said he should take 10 hours for a couple of quarters to preserve his eligibility, and reapply to OSU after he gets his grades. However admissions told him he needs to get 35 hours in before reconsideration. No we did not question the discrepancy. But in any case, he would have no guarantee and be treated as a walk on. Currently, he is taking Freshman English and Math at Broward County Community College, where he has a 4.0 average in both classes.

Last year, for one example, we ran into a problem with Morgan. He had a 3.2 core credit, 31 on his ACT but he was not in the top 50% of the class, which is an OSU admissions requirement. As he went to a magnet school, every kid there was fairly gifted and intelligent. Also, if you recall, Morgan did not play football his SR. year, but Coach Conley kept in contact with him, and still got him a offer from OSU.

Also recall that when OSU pulled the offer 2 days before LOI day, the Palm Beach Post and Sun Sentinel both did a few stories on it. They contact Andy, Coach T and Conley. At one point Coach Tressel said that he was "allowed" to submit 4 names to admissions that were provisional. Unfortunately, he had already identified last years four and Morgan was not one of them. This ability has seemed to have disappeared along with any prop 48 options. Staff seems pretty adamant about doing nothing to help Dennis out. In fact, looking back at even how they notified him, by having an assistant coach that the family had never even spoken to before, tell his family, just shows a complete lack of class that was present when I played there. I pretty much know what most FL kids GPA/SAT/ACT numbers are. Dennis' are higher than other kids that were accepted in the last few years at OSU. I know, here comes the "it was a different time" line. I do not agree. As much as we hear complaints about Cooper, when he made an offer, he worked to make it stick. When Earle made an offer, it was for keeps and Woody, no comments needed.

Yes Dennis did not make the grades. Were there special circumstances that should have come under consideration, of course and I think they did to some extent. However, it was very clear that OSU did not want Dennis enough.

One final illustrative example of my frustration. His Mom called up to admissions. Had the Director of admissions review his application. While on the phone, she said that he should have no problem qualifying, since he made it through the clearinghouse. She said she would take it to her boss and call back later in the day. Two days later, we hear he did not qualify through OSU admissions with no explanation.

I was taking with a former Coach about this whole situation. It appears they just don't want Dennis anymore. If he was MoC, in the same situation, would he be in? And if you look at who started recruiting other FL kids, does OSU still want them? To someone's point, why is OSU torching the FL bridge?

Well, time to move on and help Dennis find something else at this late date. He will do media interviews after this weekend. He SINCERELY appreciates all the wonderful posts, cards, stuffed animals, etc. he has received from everyone. ESPECIALLY FROM BUCKEYE PLANET. He wanted me to thank everyone and let you know because of the love the OSU family (fans) have shown during some really hard times, he will always be a Buckeye at heart

that line got to me. its one thing to get screwed over by an organization or school because of their strict rules.....but when this kid's dream was to play football for the Ohio State University, he thought he reached that dream, only to have it ripped away.....thats just awful. i feel so bad for this kid. i hope he makes it to a div 1 school and plays OSU in a non-conference game and torches them.

So are you implying that after the staff sent him an LOI and had him sign it, they submarined his chances for admission because they didnt want him on the team anymore? That is a bit of a wild assertion. It's not a matter of burning FL bridges if the kids just make the grade.

Nice post, 27.

Say what you want about raising academic standards and what not, considering what's been going on in Dennis' life words cannot express how awful this whole mess is. I'm more worried about Dennis than I am what it will do to Buckeye recruiting in Florida.

The simple fact of the matter is - if he had finished in the top 50% of his class - he would be in.

I think the fault lies on DK's shoulders, but I can see where some blame could be laid NOT on JT but on the admissions dept. Which is what I said was the problem all along.

I believe you feel (HH) that JT kind of screwed him over, but I think you feel that because you are so close to this kid. I probably would too. I wouldn't care who it was that dropped the ball - just that the ball was dropped.

I also think these standards aren't going away anytime soon. They want high GPA kids yada yada yada.

No, first Dennis was 68% of his class. Secondly, not at all. I am stating there are legal ways for Tressel to get him in. He selected not to use them. I simply feel they may feel set at the RB position and don't want to put him on a conditional list or prop 48 him, eventhough he is currently demonstrating he can obtain good grades. I am also pointing out that NO ONE knows what it takes to clear admissions. Football S-A get weighted diffrently because they bring additional skills to the table.

Having 2 returning RB's after this season is hardly good shape. You said yourself that he is taking 9th and 10th grade level classes. that's a big difference from a normal curiculum. I wanted DK to be a buckeye as much as the next guy, but osu is sending out a clear message, if you arent academically sound, you wont be playing ball here, otherwise, ray williams would have been offered last year and the staff could have gone the same route you suggest.

The truth and facts are out there somewhere

Well, this whole situation is awful but the bottom line is that OSU has been taking alot of heat in the national media and not to mention the scandal with the basketball program that I think that admissions is not letting anything "slip" by so to speak.

Who does it hurt? It hurts kids like Dennis Kennedy (my heart goes out to him) and it hurts Coach T and his reputation with the kids in Florida.

I do not think the coaching staff mislead The Kennedy family or Dennis himself, I just believe that Dennis didnt meet all the qualifications determined by admissions and thus got his letter pulled.

Now with that said, I do believe that Coach T owed it to his family to personally call them and explain the situation, not some assistant as it has been stated earlier in this thread.

The bottom line is that admissions at OSU are taking a "lets get tough" approach after all the media spotlight the last two years.

Good luck to you Dennis and I hope you find a comfortable place where you can follow your dreams.

Go Bucks!

HH, I'm curious as to how you are going to react to this situation. Are you going to sell tOSU to florida recruits differently? How are the other florida recruits going to react to this? namely r. wilson? In other words, has your trust in OSU been permanently damaged?

I would hope when FL kids look at OSU they dont see a negative, we have recruited FL well the last 5-7 years, its unfortunate that two or three kids got offered but then didnt make the grades, thus getting there letter pulled.

Every situation and kid is different is my point.

Best of luck DK. This whole situation stinks, but I don't know all the ins and outs, so I will say that DK will always be viewed as a Buckeye in my view. I sincerely hope the very best for Dennis. I'm also hoping against hope that DK can still, somehow gain admittance to OSU. Doesn't sound promising from what I'm reading here, but I can hope right?
