Thump: "What baggage did A-Rod come in with and what has he done to show he's not a team player?"

Why do I have to write a post, then repeat it constantly?

Baggage (from previous post) = "Yankee fans hated A-Rod for years because of the rift with Jeter, and the natural comparisons that come with 2 HOF SS's."

A-Rod aint a team player. He changed positions. Big deal. Here are two reasons why I don't put much stock in A-Rod's "tremendous sacrifice":

1. The New York Yankees, right now, are the ideal team for any player to play for. They have their own network, play in the best baseball city in America, draw 4 million fans a season, should be in the playoffs with a shot to win each and every season, and are treated like rock stars. ANY player in baseball would give up his position to be in the Bronx right now.

2. A-Rod, after burning his bridges with Texas, had no where to go. It was either play 3B in NY or be miserable in Arlington. There were only two teams in baseball that can afford his contract: the Red Sox (who failed to get him), and the Yankees. Once Door # 1 was shut, the only option he had was to play 3B behind Door # 2. And Door # 2 was a very, very attractive option (as noted in the reason above).

"I guesss you are in the clubhouse everyday and know that he's not a team player."

I don't have to be. I watch every game. I've seen too many rallies (including the one in Game 5 of the '04 ALCS) squandered by this guy trying to pull the ball all the time, giving away ABs, and completely ignoring things like moving runners over, taking pitches, etc.

You're a moron.

How about doing yourself a favor and quit nitpicking things that aren't there.

Blame your own god damn owner not the player.

Better yet, choose another team.

Everyone who has seen your rationale in this discussion thinks you're an idiot.

I've realized discussing this with you something I was told long ago, "Never get into an argument with an idiot b/c nobody wins."

Al Gore invented Dipshits who can't read.

(Oops, sorry, wrong thread).

No evidence you provided proved to me or anyone else on here that he's not a team player.

Just b/c he pulls the ball doesn't mean he's not a team player. I recall him hitting quite a few bombs to center and some to right center this year.

So a guy who can't pull the ball IS a team player? Ridiculous.

BTW, they interviewed A-Rod on the Dan Patrick show yesterday and asked him if a DH should ever win the MVP and he said "No doubt."

He said that say for instance the year Bonds hit 73 HR's he was a DH, that would be a year where a DH deserved to win it.

If a DH's #'s are above and beyond an everyday player, he thought they should win it hands down.

Watching this thread has reminded me of the thread about star wars this past summer. Sloopy you get way to emotional and irrational. You tend to take opinions, and try to turn them into hard truths which can't happen. The whole mercenary arguement shows more and more why you don't think A-Rod should be the MVP, and that is your personal hatred towards the man.

Personally I hate the yankees (other than the whole paying henson lots of money to give up football) but i can step back and look at the over all REGULAR season to see that A-rod deserves the MVP. And if you arguement is he didn't perform in the playoffs (which doesn't count in MVP voting IMHO) then Big Papi does not deserve it eitehr because the red sox didn't win the world series.

You really need to quit letting your bull headed irrational thoughts get in the way of every disagreement you get in.

Good point.

I glossed right over that.

I will say this to Sloopy about A-Rod. He isn't paid to bunt, or slap the ball to right field, or move runners over....he is paid to drive in runs.period.

And for you to say he always wants to pull the ball, has it ever occurred to you that this might be the case b/c he is pitched inside 90% of the time. Anyone who has ever watched baseball knows his natural power is right-center field b/c of his long swing. IMO, it would be selfish for him to NOT try and pull a pitch inside. Do you like it when he gets sawed off?

And what does his work ethic say about him? he is one of the hardest working players in the game. He has already hit the jackpot with his contract, so if is so selfish, why would he continue to bust his ass?

In a brilliant effort to combine the discussion of Arod (known as Slappy to us Red Sox fans) as a true Yankee and the MVP race:

I agree with Sloops that in NYC Arod is considered a hired hand compared to other Yankees. People here loved the ’98 team and their team-play attitude and spirit. The players Sloopy named (like Jeter, Rivera, etc.) epitomize that amazing team’s heart and effort while some of the newer Yankees do not.

Also, Arod is a choker. A bad choker. He was less valuable than many players, including Ortiz. If you wanna scare the Red Sox, or anybody, who do you have at bat as the Yankees? Arod? Hell no. Sheffield gives me nightmares. Arod makes me giggle. Who is the leader of the team? Who has the intangibles (cough cough)? Arod? Hell no. His own team doesn’t look at him as a leader.

He is an MVP based on statistics. While statistics can provide valid data for determining an MVP, it would help if voters looked at the right ones.

Sloopy earlier in this thread pointed out that Arod’s stats were better than Papi’s. He also pointed out that Arod wasn’t clutch. So lets combine these two thoughts and looks at stats that matter.

Arod had a higher average, but when did he hit? (stats below per Stark at ESPN)

Avg. with runners in scoring position:
Ortiz: .352
Arod: .290

Avg. in late innings of close games with runners in scoring position
Ortiz: .313
Arod: .176 (ouch! Talk about invaluable. . .)

OPS in late innings of close games with runners in scoring position
Ortiz: 1.224
Arod: .813

Blowout wins avg. (team wins by 6 or more runs)
Ortiz: .277
Arod: .549 (stat padding! Yay!)

Blowout wins OPS
Ortiz: .999
Arod: 1.793

Close games avg. (extra innings or 1-2 run margin of victory)
Ortiz: .321
Arod: .243

Close games OPS
Ortiz: 1.116
Arod: .805

Being that I am lazy, I won’t even go into the RBI stats, where Ortiz really kills in the clutch – but you all know that. Go to www.sonsofsamhorn.com for all the stats you could ever want. . .

So, essentially, Arod is an amazing hitter when his team is already kicking the crap out of a team. Great. Too bad he sucks when it matters.

Papi is the opposite. He was much more valuable and was a force in the clubhouse as well.

I am not mad about the MVP award for one reason: I am an old-school kid and don’t like DHs winning MVPs or closers winning Cy Youngs, etc.

If I wanted to, of course, I could be pissed--based on the stats. . .

:)
