Apple Software & Mac Hardware news

Sounds pretty good in theory. Will probably suit a lot of people but not me. Looks like it won't have the right combo of channels to allow me to cut the cord. At minimum I would want a package that has ESPN, Fox Sports, NBC Sports, BTN, FX, USA, TBS and BBC America. That'll never happen without true a la carte.
So basically they're offering you free channels + ESPN for $30-40. (C'mon, who really needs FX or Discovery?) That is an extremely apple-esque product and one that America will surely eat up.

I still don't have the Apple TV that I had decided to get - mainly because I don't yet have the actual TV that I'd plan to hook it up to. I was at least glad to see the price drop. My understanding is that none of these dongles or boxes are entirely seamless, but that Apple TV is the closest thing to it if you're already on a Mac/iPad/iPhone.
I've had Apple TVs in my house for several years. I love them but don't really see any difference between them and a Roku.

Frankly, I use mine as a means to hook to my audio set up then I can use AirPlay to stream music from my iPhone or iPad and listen throughout the house.

That's exactly what I want to do with mine.
Yes, for me it essentially turns my iPhone or iPad into a remote control anywhere in my house. So when hooked into my receiver, I can be in the garage or anywhere else I've got audio and select music etc. That said, I think there are receivers that offer AirPlay now so a new receiver could probably do this without invoking Apple tv. And again, I think you can do the same thing with Roku, although I haven't actually seen it done. So while I have long loved my Apple TVs, I don't think it offers anything you cannot do in multiple other ways.

AppleTV also gives you synchronized display from your iOS device, in case you want to play CrossyRoad on your 70" TV.

...

Writing for Buzzfeed, Paczkowski says Apple is planning to launch a brand new Apple TV box at WWDC in June, one that will include (finally!) an App Store that will see it competing with services from Roku, Amazon, and Google (with their Fire TV and Chromecast products), to the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox.

...

The new Apple TV box is said to be a huge upgrade to the current product, which is several years old at this point and just saw a price cut from $99 to $69. It is said to include the latest processors from the iPhone 6, plus big increases in on-board storage to host apps and other content, and it will also include Siri support of some sort.

It could act as a base of operations for Apple's HomeKit home automation play, talking to things like thermostats, ceiling fans, and garage door openers when no other Apple devices are active within the house.

It's likely that other Apple devices like the iPhone, iPad, and the new Apple Watch would interact with the Apple TV, acting as a remote control, a microphone for Siri, or more.

For businesses, a dramatic expansion of the Apple TV could empower conference rooms, command and operations centers, and more. Custom apps, so popular on the iPhone and iPad, could give executives an at-a-glance view of what their companies are up to in real time or allow for more advanced remote conferencing. Anything that one might want to move from a phone, iPad, or computer to a large screen could be on the table.

LG may have just outed an 8K iMac

Apple's suppliers take a $50 million blood oath on new model secrecy, but it looks like someone from LG didn't get that memo. In a press release explaining why 4K is now passé (really?), the company's display division inadvertently leaked an iMac with an incredible 8K screen. While discussing its own 98-inch 8K TV, it said "Apple has also announced that they will release the 'iMac 8K' with a super-high resolution display this year." Unfortunately for LG, Apple announced no such thing, meaning the Korean company may have revealed information meant for its eyes only.

First Apple Watch sales results

In Friday’s pre-orders, $449 to $1,099 was a sweeter spot than expected.

Not knowing how many Apple Watches were available for pre-sale before they ran out on Friday, it’s impossible to say for certain how many units were sold. [See update below]. Meanwhile, we’ve learned something about the distribution of the early adopters’ orders.

Among the one in 10 respondents who told BMO Capital Markets before pre-orders began that they planned to buy an Apple Watch, their preferences were:

60% aluminum ($349-$399)
12% stainless steel ($449-$1,099)
4% gold ($10,000-$17,000)
24% undecided

Judging from the Sunday morning reader polls we’ve seen, the undecideds broke heavily for the mid-range ($449-$1,099) stainless steel.

Apple Watch 1st day pre-orders estimated near 1 mln

SAN MATEO, Calif. — Nearly 1 million people placed an order for an Apple Watch on the first day it was available, with most going for the cheapest model, a shopping research firm estimated.

Slice Intelligence said e-receipt data from 9,080 online shoppers indicate 957,000 people in the U.S. pre-ordered the smartwatch on Friday. On average, they ordered more than 1 watch (1.3), spending an average $503.83 per watch. An estimated 62% purchased the less-expensive Sport model.

Bought the 13" Retina MacBook Pro last weekend. Happy Father's Day, self.

Really impressive piece of hardware. Used to own a PowerBook G3 back in the OS 8/9 days and switched to Linux about the time OS X launched. This is my first Apple computer in the home since maybe 1999. Very happy with it. Forcetouch pad and the keyboard are incredible.

I will say though, Apple should put a note card or some such on the anti-static film that sits between the lid and the keyboard, so you can't miss it when you unbox it. On this note card they should print all the different finger gestures for swiping and scrolling and pinching that work on the trackpad, because having not used a MacBook in however many years Apple's been making the pads this way, it was crazy frustrating learning by trial and error, especially since scroll bars are off in everything by default.

Anyone have the new MacBook yet? Interested in opinions on it, or whether I pull the trigger on a 15" MacBook Pro.
Do you like terrible computers that are thin and shiny and laughably expensive ? If so, buy the MacBook.

Or spend a tiny bit less and get a real machine like you did

There's nothing wrong with a super low end machine with a nice screen. There is something wrong with a market that buys it at a premium price because there's an apple logo on it.

The MacBook Pro is really expensive but also a stellar machine that earned that premium. The MacBook is the stuff they serve you for lunch in elementary schools on Friday.
