B1G CCG: THE Ohio State University vs NW’ern: Sat, Dec. 19 in Indianapolis, Noon on Fox

OHIO STATE'S BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME TRAILER HAS US READY TO SEE SOME CONFETTI

The Buckeyes are ready.

In just a couple of days, Ohio State will take on Northwestern in the Big Ten title game. The Buckeyes are ready and prepared to win a championship, and after watching the game trailer, you will be too.

Mickey Marotti: “I’m telling you, it’s the greatest thing ever. It’s why we do this – we do it for each other, but we do it to win. To be a champion."

Ryan Day: “Whether it was in recruiting, whether it was two months ago, whenever it was, you guys have all said, ‘I want to play for a championship, Coach.’ Well, here we are. You're here. You're in it. What are we gonna do with it?”

Is it Saturday yet?

Football is a game of match-ups, and Northwestern defense matches up well with the style that Ohio State plays... up until the athletes on the edge get to be too much for them. Then the scheme breaks down entirely. COVID would have to take out at least half of the OSU wideouts before the Buckeyes fall below that threshold.

I think this one gets out of hand, probably in the first half

The issue with our system vs theres is Ryan will take what they give us and we have the strong arm QB to take advantage of the soft coverage they play. As you say eventually itll be too much for them and theyll break down.

We've played at least some defenses that are fairly good like IU and Penn State. However they've seen nothing this season that is remotely in the same stratosphere as our offense.

I think it'll be a 49 to 20 type of game.

I think I skipped over some important points in the matchup in my previous post.

NW holds teams farther below their average passing efficiency than any team in the B1G. The other side of that coin is that they don't really hold teams very far below their average yards per rush. They focus more on stopping the pass.

My post was only about the passing game, and I stand by it. Even focusing on stopping the pass, they are still going to get burned because they cannot cover our wideouts. In addition to Field's rocket arm, the Buckeyes have athletes that they cannot contain.

But back to the other side of the coin...

It no longer makes much sense talking about the "front 7"; it's probably more accurate to say that Northwestern relies on the players in the box to contain the run (they don't really try to stop it). Much like their ability to contain the wideouts they've played, they've also been able to contain the running game of everyone they've played, even with the linebackers taking deep drops to take away the passing game. I really don't think that's going to work against by far the best OL in the B1G.

Having mentioned everyone else... then there are the Ohio State tight ends. If you stress the linebackers with throws to the tight ends, they'll find it even more difficult to contain Teague and Sermon.

Northwestern's only chance is to:
  1. replicate what Indiana did
  2. hope that Ohio State hasn't figured out an answer for it
  3. hope that you can execute something that is so different from your base defense
  4. hope that Ohio State plays as badly as they did against Indiana
  5. hope that Peyton Ramsey is somehow equal to the man who chased him out of Bloomington, if only for 3 hours
Good luck with that

One thing I’d state.....you don’t just replicate what Indiana did. That takes time and practice to come up with those schemes. It’s not something you just install in a week after identifying it on tape, IMO. Tom Allen really is a helluva coach. IU lucky to have that dude.
