B1G CCG: THE Ohio State University vs NW’ern: Sat, Dec. 19 in Indianapolis, Noon on Fox

Um, what message board did I logon to? I went back and read over 100 pages to catch up. Gotta say this is very Walmart wolverine fan from quite a few of you. Oh boo-fucking-hoo, we didn't play well in winning our 4th consecutive outright BigTen title. My Chicken-Little-brain can't comprehend the possibility of #11 Indiana and #14 Northwestern, of all teams, giving us a hard fought game. Since when are they allowed to "want it" as much as we do? Don't they know we recruit much better than they do? Heisman caliber QB? Bench him because he isn't Superman today. For God sake, don't let him throw the damn ball. Same for the coach. 22-1-0 isn't nearly good enough. If I can see the problem from behind the safety of my remote control, maybe it's time for him to go. Yeah, yeah, we might win, but it's how we win right? Can't tackle, can't cover, poor scheme, poor play-calling ... oh God, what will happen in the playoffs? I was all torches and pitch-forks when our yearly rivalry beat down was cancelled, but Clemson ... Bama? I've lost my faith. I'd rather not even play than risk an embarrassing loss. How could my fandom endure such humilliation?

I'm not sure I want any part of the playoffs.

I want no part of getting blown out in a playoff game.

sign me up to play AM in some meaningless bowl game because without any kind of improvements we are looking at an embarrassing loss first round vs Clemson or Alabama.

This "season" is a turd, I just want it to end.

Want no part of the playoff.

Just take a knee this 2nd half and pack it in until 2021.

Regardless of what happens in this game, this team isn't ready for Clemson or Bama.

I'd be okay with calling it a year if they win this.

Just pack it in and go home.

I hope they drop out of the top 4 even if they somehow pull this off.

Still think this team belongs more than anyone on the outside looking in.

I'm okay calling it a season...but I get that the kids/coaches wanna play.

I'd rather sit out than to play either....

call it a day and get ready for next season.

No way we hang with Clemson or Bama.

So yeah, a good bit of hyperbole in my opening, but come on folks. And I be lying if I said I didn't share some of the same frustrations. But the truth is, we are blessed beyond measure as a fan base. All we ask is for an opportunity ...

... an opportunity to play at all ... something our players, staff and families fought tooth and nail to achieve.
... an opportunity to have a senior season ... a brotherhood isn't built upon a win-loss record.
... an opportunity to face any challenge ... opponent, scheduling, the unknown of the season, or pandemic.
... an opportunity to become legend ... sometimes it takes a career ... or just one game.
... an opportunity that most other teams and fan bases will NEVER get to experience.

Yes, Covid-19 has ruined a great many things, and yet there are a host of blessings if you look for them. Justin Hilliard and Trey Sermon come to mind. Not because they had a great game, but because they had that game when the brotherhood needed them. When we as fans needed them.

Who will step up in the playoffs? I don't know ... maybe no one. Maybe we do get humbled, but I do know it's worth the risk. They have earned their opportunity ... and respect, and gratitude. In this crazy year, it has been a blessing for me personally to watch the Buckeyes ... whatever happens. Now go get some boys ... Go Bucks!

Amen.

I love being an OSU fan, but watching a team like NU step up yesterday is what CFB is all about for me.

We have been celebrating all week bringing in a class with 18 kids rated 4 stars or better. We do something like this every year.

In the past five years NU has signed a total of 3 four star recruits.

I don't care how many of our starters were out or that Justin Fields didn't have his go-to receiver available, we replaced everyone who was missing with a kid rated higher than anyone on their roster. Yet those kids shut us down for an entire half. That's grit. (And save the responses about how we kept shooting ourselves in the foot. Everybody they play shoots themselves in the foot.)

And we beat them on the backs of a kid we didn't even sign in one of those stellar classes, but rather transferred from one perennial playoff team to another (I'll save the rant about how the playoff is ruining CFB).

Ya gotta hand it to 'em....a bunch of future brain surgeons brought it to us. Pretty impressive.

I see none of my comments in there. You can't beat Clemson if you don't play Clemson.

Justin Fields, who completed just 12 of his 27 passing attempts against Northwestern, was the only offensive starter who didn't earn champion honors this week. Offensive player of the game Trey Sermon was joined on his side of the ball by the entire starting offensive line of Thayer Munford, Harry Miller, Josh Myers, Wyatt Davis and Nicholas Petit-Frere; tight ends Luke Farrell and Jeremy Ruckert; and wide receivers Garrett Wilson, Julian Fleming, Jameson Williams and Kamryn Babb.

Fleming and Babb both earn champion honors for the first time in their Ohio State careers.

On defense, player of the game Justin Hilliard is joined by defensive tackles Tommy Togiai, Haskell Garrett and Taron Vincent; defensive ends Jonathon Cooper, Zach Harrison and Tyreke Smith; and the starting secondary of Shaun Wade, Sevyn Banks, Josh Proctor and Marcus Williamson. Linebackers Tuf Borland and Pete Werner were the only defensive starters who weren't named champions for their performances in the Buckeyes' 22-10 win.

Someone doesn't know what a Walmart Wolverine is.

Eh, possibly a fair criticism … and I did consider a “Germans bombing Pearl Harbor” reference fwiw. Anyway, I consider a Walmart Wolverine to be the fan that gloms on to that which is cheap and easy and safe. Sure that can be merchandise from a discount retailer, but more pointedly, it refers to appropriating a history or esprit de corps of a bygone era. A spirit that can no longer be refreshed by challenge … as to do so might risk the enthusiasm and devotion cultivated so long ago.

It’s easy to puff up and wax poetic about the most all time wins. But having to face the Buckeyes? This year? THE Game? Give us Covid instead. Oh, let us reminisce about our national championships! Well no, nothing much recently, but that’s because we have to play the BigTen East. Put us in the West, or better yet let us move to the Pac12 … then you’ll see!

You see, I find that attitude from Michigan fans (not all to be sure) whether they attended the school, or purchased if from the discount rack at Walmart. A passion hollowed at its core because of the misbelief that the pride of past endeavors is threatened by the risk of future actions.

The inverse is certainly true. To me, this is being a Buckeye. The plain reason we are different than Michigan. We are willing and hopeful and eager to risk it all. For the opportunity to renew our spirit. To earn our place. To justify our pride. And if failure is in the offing, we too are strong enough to shoulder that burden as well. To carry with us the ridicule of opposing fans and talking heads as we pick up the pieces and begin the journey once again. Ultimately, success and failure aren’t measured by an outcome, but by the actions we take when presented with opportunity.

Will we win? I do not know. There is an opportunity to find out. Go Bucks!

You're right... going into the season I made it a goal to not do what I did on Saturday. Instead I had too many drinks and for some reason expected perfection. Which is silly considering it's been such an imperfect season. There probably wasnt a bigger ass hole than me on Saturday and unfortunately I have one a year like that which isn't an excuse.

You're right though. We were close to not even having a season so the fact we got in 6 games, won the big ten and get a shot at Clemson should be celebrated.

As always personally I know I cringed the next day knowing how I acted. Especially checking in here the next day too.

We are very spoiled as a fan base. 4 straight big ten titles shouldn't be taken for granted.

Well I wouldn't beat yourself up over it bukI. I was frustrated as hell watching the game too. Had some family over so I wasn't drinking. Maybe the only reason I didn't experience a cringy day after. :-)

Honestly didn't quote any posters names (and not sure you're even in those quotes) because it wasn't my intention to chastise anyone individually. Just wanted to note that wishing to duck an opponent because we are worried about the outcome is a (Walmart) Wolverine fanbase move. The day that becomes more than just venting frustration during the game is the day my faith in Buckeye nation begins to die. I'm not going to sit quietly while that happens.
