B1G Football: January 2021

SKULL SESSION: BIG TEN FOOTBALL COULD START AS EARLY AS NOVEMBER, BRAXTON MILLER JOINS FIGHT TO SAVE THE SEASON, AND ATHLETIC DIRECTORS ARE HOPEFUL ABOUT BASKETBALL SEASON

FOOTBALL FOR THANKSGIVING.
It looks like we could see Big Ten football this fall after all – but very, very late fall.

With parents groups continuing to demand Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren further explain the reasons for shutting down the 2020 football season and eight Nebraska players filing a lawsuit in an attempt to overturn that decision, the league’s football coaches continue working on a revised schedule.

According to two college football sources familiar with the Big Ten, those talks have generated a new option.

The potential proposal features a Big Ten season of at least eight games, starting Thanksgiving week.

The Journal Sentinel reported earlier this month that league officials were working on a plan to play an eight-game season beginning in January, with the games to be played in indoor facilities.

So if this comes to fruition and Ohio State is sitting at 4-0 when the College Football Playoff selection committee makes its decision... Who says no?

Honestly, there's a non-zero chance the Big Ten could convince the College Football Playoff to delay for about a month anyway, especially because it's extremely unlikely every other conference gets to late December smoothly at this point since we already had multiple games postponed yesterday and we haven't even started playing yet.

So basically, Ohio State's title hopes ain't dead yet, they're just on life support.

Second Rose Bowl an intriguing option for a championship if college football played in spring 2021

If the Big Ten and Pac-12 play this spring, a second Rose Bowl would make a ton of sense

Kevin Warren was on the phone the other day with the man who could save a Big Ten spring season -- and maybe a bit of Warren's reputation.

David Eads is CEO of the Rose Bowl. He has been asked increasingly about the possibility of staging two Rose Bowls. One is already scheduled as a College Football Playoff semifinal Jan. 1, 2021.

The other would have to be added at the end of the spring season populated with the winners of the Big Ten and Pac-12. That's where Warren, the Big Ten commissioner, comes in.

Did he ask about a second Rose Bowl that would benefit his league and lend some definition to an already fractured college football season?

"It was on a totally different subject," Eads said of the Zoom conversation. "There were more than 100 people on the call."

That does little to clear up the building anxiety over what the Big Ten and Pac-12 will be playing for next year.

The minimum would be conference championship games in those two leagues. As for a second "Granddaddy Of Them All" …

Separate sources within each the Big Ten and Pac-12 said there have only been preliminary discussions about the subject.

"There's been a conversation about that possibility," one the sources said.

Eads would not go that far. Not even close.

"I've been asked that question several times," Eads said. "We're a semifinal site this year for the CFP. Obviously, my team is working aggressively [on that] if there is college football this fall. The question about a spring schedule with both the Big Ten and Pac-12 and could that result in another Rose Bowl? I don't think anybody has given any thought or consideration to that at this point."
