I'm just surprised that Ohio State is in the bottom half of the B!G here. I guess it's the results that count, Ohio State has been having the top rated B1G recruiting classes lately. Apparently Ohio State is spending the money more "more wisely" than some other schools, just attracts the better athletes, and/or has better recruiters.

I'm not. Columbus is in the geographic center of a talent rich state with interstates or well maintained state routes that can get you to anywhere in Ohio, let alone into 5 other neighboring states in under 2 hours by car. Campus is also 10 minutes via I-670 from a major airport with direct flights daily to virtually anywhere in the US, many of them dirt cheap.

OSU just happens to have several travel advantages over the rest of the conference which means their dollars go further than everyone elses'. If Ohio State recruited like Ohio State but had to do it from out of State College PA or Bloomington IN, they'd be spending $1.5m.

Why is it that the flights I want never seem to be dirt cheap?

Also, according to reports the recruiters (or at least Meyer) flies in a private jet.

Ohio State shall fly Coach by private (not commercial) aircraft when Coach is making recruiting visits and other mutually-agreed upon University business. When such recruiting visits or University business are more than 200 miles from the City of Columbus, Ohio State shall fly Coach by private (not commercial) jet aircraft. Ohio State agrees to let coach use such jet aircraft for his personal use for thirty-five (35) hours [in-air and dead time inclusive] each year during the term of this agreement. Coach's use of such private aircraft for recruiting and other mutually-agreed upon University business shall not exceed fifty (50) hours [in-air and dead time inclusive] during each contract year.
