Basketball is the only sport that encourages fouling

  • Have you ever seen a football, hockey, soccer, etc., game where teams intentionally commit violations late in the game, when trailing and trying come back? Obviously, not. Basketball, on the other hand, does it all the time. The result is the last 90 seconds of a game can take 10 minutes, or more, as foul after foul turns the game into a FT shooting contest.

    This could be easily fixed.

Get rid of the 1-1 at 7 fouls. The 7th foul is 2 shots. As for the double bonus at 10+ fouls, it would be 2 shots AND possession. This way, the final minute foul fest becomes a detriment, not a betterment, to the losing team.

another option might be to start every foul in the last 2 minutes = 2 shots and possession. Some teams might only have 4 fouls going into last two minutes.

A better compromise might be various spots on the floor where a player is able to take anywhere between a 1 point shot up to a 6 point shot depending on the shot is taken. 1 point= lay up (we all want to see those misses). 2 points= free throw. 3 points from the three point line. 4 points from half court. 5 points from 3/4 court. And a full 6 points from the opposite baseline.

Wasn't being serious at first but this intrigues me.

That'll be a $10,000 fine. You did not have the exclusive, copyright agreement to use his name. A-hole.

Ok, well, that'll be a $7,875 fine on you for taunting.

As for the original problem of late game fouls, just enforce the rules that exist. Call the flagrant and its two shots and possession. That should effectively end the nuisance of the late game fouling

Penalty box. Would love to see the Buckeyes on the power play.

They might be able to score a bucket or two with a man advantage.

I still think George Carlin had the best idea to liven up basketball;5 second shot clocks plus any basket made that goes in directly off an opponents head is worth 10 points.

At the two-minute mark, all officials should be removed from the floor and everybody can just have at it. For prime time games, they can bring back Gorky Taylor, Ron Behagen, Dave Winfield, and maybe a couple Minnesota fans just to make it more interesting.
