I have a question about before games? First off I live in virginia and I have been a buckeye since I was born and raised there for 16 years. Anyhow this will be my first game up coming against cinncy, and I was wondering when the gates open? Also I heard from some fans down here that OSU has some kinda pep rally in St.Johns arena? If so what time does that start, and finally tail gating!! Where's the best place to tail gate?! thanks for the help guys! GO BUCKS!!

1) Gates open two hours before kickoff assuming nothing funny is happening or there isn't a weather related issue.

2) The pep rally you make reference to is skull secision (my spelling sucks). It starts I believe 2.5 hours before kickoff. I am not certain, but it is in St. John Arena which is across Woody Hayes Dr. from the stadium. I would make sure you get there at least 45 minute early if you want to make sure you have a seat.

3) Finally the best place to tailgate is... There is not bad place to tailgate. Motorhomes usually end up in the Schottenstein Center lot off lane and Olentangy, or just off 315 and Lane. You will probably want to check out Heinegate which is at the Holiday Inn on Lane Ave. Before or after the game it is a fun time. Assuming you are of age the Varsity Club would be another stop I would make.

If you need any other help, as far as what to do in Columbus, just ask.

Just a word of caution on the tailgating...they were beginning to crack down on drinking in the parking lots last year (horror stories of "open container stings" abound). I have no idea what will happen this year, but I can find out from a reliable source in the University and get back to you if you want.

So I've heard, about them cracking down on drinking. Ridiculous. I like to have a couple in me before I go to the games so that I'm energized, pumped up and loosened up. Is that so bad? I mean, last year, a couple that sat in front of me at EVERY GAME took in a flask of booze and were loaded every game, and they're telling me I can't drink two beers in the parking lot before the game? I don't like it.

Is there any word on whether or not they're having the horrendous student ticket situation again this year? I mean, 2 scanners for student tickets all at one gate...I missed my share of kickoffs last year because of that nonsense.

I went to three home games last year and went to Heinygate. You can drink all you want BUT you have to remain inside the fenced in "drinking areas". They have cops standing at every entrance and will stop you if you try to exit with a beer in your hand. Don't plan on walking down Lane Avenue or any other street with an open container or you'll be cited.

My source tells me the policies are the same this year as last, meaning don't have a tent or a party with open containers readily apparent on campus in any of the parking lots, or you can be cited in a heartbeat...and they do patrol. It is true what has been said about Hineygate above, but don't plan on cracking open a bunch in the lots near the stadium or waling down Lane.

thanks

Alright so definatley get there early for the OSU game..... Well I have a 7 hour drive so most likly me and my buddy will be arriving in Columbus at around 8-8:30. I've heard so much about Columbus on game day so I'm excited! another thing is I don't have too much OSU gear cuz of the horrible teams in virginia so what would you say would be a good place to get ALOT of cheaper just simple OSU t-shirts??? thanks for the help guys, and as for the drink'n policy I wish I could drink but well I'm only 20 so ONE MORE YEAR..... Go bucks!

The best thing to do is duck out on a side street when you get in Columbus and pound a few before you make your way up towards the stadium.

The cops are definately getting more strict, last year my buddy had an unopened beer in his hand and a damn cop took it from him, that was bullshit in my book. My best advice to you is to find a crowded parking lot, and pour your beer in a cup, if you spot a cop.........chug! chug! chug!

Daddy is right on this. I have also found that being a "nice guy" to the cops themselves helps. There were several games last year where I flat-out asked the cops in the parking garage/lot about the drinking, and both times the answers were the same. "I don't care what you do, but if I see you being obvious, and drinking alcohol, I have to cite you." In other words, put it in a cup, and don't make an ass of yourself. You will not be able to walk around with an open container, but if you're a little circumspect, you'll still be able to tailgate.

I found the best place to drink last year was in the Fawcett Center parking lot. A couple other areas we ventured into early in the season had undercovers with mullets wearing Buckeye gear giving warnings saying they were going to be back around giving citations.

We are being told that all tickets will be scanned this year. I'm not sure if that means students can go in any gate now or not, but I'd suggest that everyone get to the gates even earlier than usual this year.

If you keep it in a plastic cup (not a see through cup) and you are tailgating they tend to leave you alone... they can site you, however unless you are rude or careless they will usually leave you alone. (we drink right in front of the stadium at a tailgate and cops walk by about every 15 min. and nobody has been bothered... if you act up the story would more than likely be different...

Congrats on attending the opening of one of the most exciting seasonal events known! It has been 26 years since I have attended a home game.
I get to bring my kids to the Bucks v. Penn State game and allow them to terrorize my old neighborhood on Halloween night! Although I recall the traditions, so many venues have changed that I will not remember the old landmarks! Enjoy! :osu:
