When the Bengals released fullback Jeremi Johnson this week, it ended what had become a frustrating and disappointing relationship for the team. Johnson was a key member of the running game in previous years, but he was overweight throughout the offseason. Then he suffered a knee injury that forced him to miss the season, and the Bengals had to use Daniel Coats -- a converted tight end -- as the lead blocker in their base running offense.

NFL notebook: Bengals' injury woes mount

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 3:19 AM

From staff and wire reports

The Cincinnati Bengals lost safety Marvin White to torn knee ligaments, meaning more than half of the starting defense from the season opener is now on injured reserve, to say nothing of the handful of players still nursing other injuries.
Coach Marvin Lewis said White suffered the injury early in Sunday's 34-3 loss to Baltimore. He played most of the game on the injured leg. A postgame examination revealed the extent of the damage.
"It was quite a surprise to everyone," Lewis said.

Notebook: Very unhealthy situation
Utecht joins ridiculously long list of injured players
Monday, December 1, 2008 3:00 AM
By Scott Priestle

The Columbus Dispatch

CINCINNATI -- Bengals tight end Ben Utecht finished yesterday's game in the trainer's room. It has been a popular place lately.
The Bengals have 15 players on the season-ending injured reserve list and previously released five other players from IR. Another handful of starters are nursing injuries that kept them out yesterday, which practically doomed Cincinnati to a loss to Baltimore.
The defense was missing seven players who have started multiple games this season, including three defensive ends and three defensive backs. The offense was missing its expected quarterback, left tackle and left guard, as well as the backup left guard, No. 3 receiver and No. 2 tight end.

Ndukwe aspires to be among elite
Bengals safety has watched the best at position, hopes to emulate them
Thursday, December 4, 2008 3:33 AM
By Scott Priestle

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- The silver lining to his recent injury is that Bengals safety Chinedum Ndukwe had a chance to study Troy Polamalu and Ed Reed, two of the best in the business at his position, in person the past two weeks. He could get a similar opportunity Sunday when the Bengals face Bob Sanders and the Colts.
"I try to model myself after them," Ndukwe said. "I respect them."
Which is not to say he sees much silver amid the clouds of a 1-10-1 record and a torn ligament in his left foot.

Line looms large vs. Colts defense

Sunday, December 7, 2008 3:13 AM
By Scott Priestle

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

CINCINNATI -- Dwight Freeney learned of Levi Jones' injury problems during a conference call with Cincinnati media Wednesday. Until that moment, Freeney, the Pro Bowl defensive end, expected to face Jones today when the Colts host the Bengals.
Instead, he will face rookie Anthony Collins, while Jones nurses back and leg injuries.
"Now that I know that ... " Freeney said with a laugh.
He expects to see frequent double-team blocks -- or at least a running back or tight end chipping him -- and more quick passes, which will mean more barriers to the quarterback and less time to get there. It is a different challenge than if he was going head to head with the veteran Jones.

Colts 35, Bengals 3
Bengals let Colts get a rare blowout
Cincinnati hasn't scored a touchdown in 11 quarters
Monday, December 8, 2008 3:07 AM
By Michael Marot

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts cornerback Kelvin Hayden had a perfect read on the Cincinnati Bengals.
Peyton Manning apparently was doing his homework, too.
Manning threw for three scores yesterday and Hayden returned an interception for a touchdown, leading Indianapolis to its most lopsided win of the season, 35-3.
"We did a great job game planning, and we knew their quarterback would get rattled if we got some pressure," Hayden said. "I just tried to take advantage of it."
Did he ever.
Hayden picked off two passes, setting up one Indy touchdown and returning the second 85 yards for another.
Manning also exploited the big holes in Cincinnati's defense. His mixture of methodical drives and quick-hitting plays were too much for the beleaguered Bengals, and after failing to score an offensive touchdown last week at Cleveland, Manning led the Colts on three TD drives of 69 yards or longer.

BENGALS NOTES
Chad not bothered by benching

By Chick Ludwig
Staff Writer

Monday, December 08, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS ? In a rare benching, Bengals wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco opened the game on the sidelines.
Then he turned in his finest game of the season ? five catches for 79 yards. T.J. Houshmandzadeh had eight receptions for 75 yards.
Why didn't Chad start?
"Because I chose not to start him," head coach Marvin Lewis said. "It was just my decision not to start him and to play the other guys."
Rookie second-round pick Jerome Simpson started in Ocho Cinco's place and got shut out.

Palmer to throw longer in comeback bid

Tuesday, December 9, 2008 2:58 AM

FROM WIRE REPORTS
Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer will throw for longer distances this week, an encouraging development as he tests his injured passing elbow.

Palmer hasn't played since Oct. 5 because a tendon and ligament in his right elbow are partially torn from the bone. He rested the elbow for two months and resumed throwing last week, hoping the elbow has healed and won't need surgery.
