Bethune-Cookman Series @ Daytona Beach, FL (FIRE BEALS)

Cookman looks awful on paper. .217 BA with a 9.75 ERA while fielding .949 qualifies as awful I think. Teams are hitting .325 against Cookman pitching with an OPS of .950. Yet they somehow have a series win over Boston College and 3 wins total. And they somehow score some runs averaging over 5 per game.

They’ve got one good starting pitcher and an excellent 2 way guy in Brandon Wilkes who is their closer and best position player.

Hopefully our offense can gain some confidence against a vulnerable pitching staff. Kobie Foppe especially. He’s hitting a robust .069. Pohl is struggling still...he started red hot last year but slumped big time in league play and unfortunately that’s carried over to 2019. Shoutout to Malik Jones who is second among everyday players with a .414 OBP. He leads the team with 9 BB.

Just for fun, I checked in on Seton Hall and wasn’t surprised to learn they are still winless. Weather limited them to two games last weekend . They lost both..one to Dayton and one to something called Fairleigh Dickinson. They managed only 7 hits combined in those two losses.

    • This weekend marks the second trip to Bethune-Cookman in school history. Ohio State is 4-1 all-time vs. the Wildcats. The Scarlet and Gray claimed a series sweep at Bill Davis Stadium during the 2016 season. The lone loss came on the road in 2010. Head coach Greg Beals is 4-0 all-time vs. Bethune-Cookman.
    • The 2019 Buckeyes return 15 letterwinners from the 2018 NCAA Tournament team that finished with a 36-24 overall record. Key players returning this year include second team All-Big Ten honoree Dominic Canzone, third team selection Conner Pohl and 2018 All-Big Ten Freshman standout Dillon Dingler.
    • The team welcomed 16 newcomers in the fall. Ten Buckeyes have made their debuts this year.
    • Ohio State is led by ninth-year head coach Greg Beals. He is 266-206-1 overall at Ohio State and holds a 509-408-1 career coaching record. Beals has guided the team to NCAA Regional appearances in two of the last three years.
    • The Scarlet and Gray will open the 2019 season with 16-straight road games. The Buckeyes will play in the state of Florida twice and will also visit Texas and South Carolina.
    • The Buckeyes are hitting .230 as a team with 13 doubles, nine home runs and 35 RBI. The OSU pitching staff has combined for a 2.73 ERA with 61 strikeouts in 69.1 innings of work.
    A LOOK AT THE WILDCATS
Bethune-Cookman is 3-4 to start 2019. The Wildcats won a home series over Boston College last weekend in Daytona. The BCU bats are hitting .222 with 13 doubles and two homers. The pitching staff has a 9.45 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 60.0 innings pitched. The staff has hit 20 batters and thrown 11 wild pitches in seven games. Friday night right-handed starter Anthony Maldonado is 0-0 with a 3.27 ERA with nine strikeouts in 11.0 innings. At the plate, Brandon Wilkes is hitting .500 with five doubles and one homer. Maldonado made his way onto the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Preseason First Team, and was joined by first Danny Rodriguez (first base), Zach Spivey (outfield) and Nate Sterijevski (shortstop).

    LAST TIME OUT
Ohio State went 1-3 last weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas. The team fell, 5-1, against BYU last Friday and lost two one-run games at Texas A&M Corpus-Christi. The lone win was an 8-3 victory vs. Oral Roberts last Sunday. Brent Todys led the team at the Kleberg Bank College Classic with a .417 average (5-for-12) with two doubles and one homer, while Noah West hit .333 (4-for-12) with two doubles. On the mound, Griffan Smith earned his second win of the week after throwing five innings and limited the Eagles to three hits and one run with five strikeouts.

    CHERRY LEADING AT THE PLATE
Senior Brady Cherry is guiding the team with a .379 average (11-for-29) with five runs scored, two doubles and three home runs. He started the season on a five-game hit streak and has collected two three-hit games. Cherry went 3-for-7 with four runs scored, and two RBI vs. Bethune-Cookman in the home series sweep in 2016.

    SNOWBIRD REWIND
Ohio State began the year 4-0 for the second time under head coach Greg Beals and 12th time in school history. Ohio State swept Seton Hall in a three-game series before taking a 2-0 win at Florida Gulf Coast on Monday, Feb. 18. The story of the opening weekend was the dominant pitching. The Buckeye hurlers threw two shutouts. The Buckeyes, which had five arms make their collegiate debut, struck out a combined 38 hitters, while only allowing five walks. The Buckeyes lost 442.1 innings pitched (IP) of 535.1 total IP from the 2018 NCAA tourney team (83 percent).

    GOING YARD
Senior Brady Cherry and junior Dominic Canzone have each cracked three homers this season. The Buckeye began the year hitting a home run in four straight games. Junior Noah West, redshirt sophomore Brent Todys and freshman Zach Dezenzo have one long ball through eight games.

BIG TEN FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Freshman right-handed pitcher Garrett Burhenn was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Feb. 18. Burhenn, from Indianapolis, Ind., earns his first career weekly honor. Burhenn is the first Buckeye to be named the league’s rookie of the week since Dominic Canzone was honored in 2017.

Burhenn was dominant in his collegiate debut vs. Seton Hall Feb. 16, leading the Buckeyes to a 6-0 shutout victory in Port Charlotte, Fla. He allowed just one hit in eight innings of work and only faced the minimum (24 batters). Burhenn finished with six strikeouts and had no walks to claim his first win of his career. Burhenn became the first Buckeye pitcher to toss at least seven innings in a debut since Brad Goldberg threw seven innings in his debut vs. St. John’s Feb. 17, 2013.

    NINE FRESHMEN SEE FIRST ACTION
Coach Greg Beals did not hesitate to initiate freshmen in the team’s first two weekends. Nine freshmen, including eight true freshmen, saw action in Port Charlotte and Corpus Christi. Seth Lonsway and Garrett Burhenn set the tone with fantastic starts in wins vs. Seton Hall. Zach Dezenzo has made seven starts at third base and has one homer and five RBI. Marcus Ernst got the nod at third base in one game and scored two runs with one double. Nolan Clegg started as the Buckeyes’ designated hitter in one contest. On the mound, Bayden Root fired three scoreless innings of relief with five strikeouts at Florida Gulf Coast. Will Pfennig hasn’t allowed an earned run in 8.2 innings out of the bullpen, while Mitch Milheim has thrown four scoreless frames. TJ Brock made his collegiate debut on the mound last weekend in Corpus Christi, Texas.

    UP NEXT
Ohio State travels to the First Pitch Invitational in Greenville, S.C., March 8-10, hosted by Michigan State University. The Buckeyes will face Furman, the Spartans and Western Carolina.

Baseball: Ohio State seeks bounce-back weekend against Bethune-Cookman
By Keaton Maisano: keaton-maisano February 28, 2019 1 Comment

The Ohio State baseball team strives to rebound from a three-loss weekend in Texas.

Ohio State (5-3) will face off against Bethune-Cookman (3-4) in a four-game series in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Buckeyes are coming off a weekend of sloppy baseball that plagued the team, losing three of the four games played.

The team only walked five batters during the first weekend, but 24 runners reached base on balls the second weekend. The Buckeyes also committed seven errors in Texas.

These statistics showed up on the scoreboard, as Ohio State surrendered more than three times the amount of runs they allowed opening weekend.

“We need to get back to playing clean baseball: throwing strikes, taking care of the baseball, doing the things that need to be consistent on a championship ballclub,” Beals said.

The opening weekend was defined by dominant pitching, which struggled to shine in the second weekend. Sophomore pitcher Griffan Smith, who picked up his second win this season, is not alarmed by the performance of the pitching staff in Texas.

“It’s a long season,” Smith said. “This is the game of baseball. You’re going to give up hits. You’re going to give up runs. Some days you’re not going to have your stuff.”

Echoing this calm mindset, senior left fielder Brady Cherry will lean on his past experiences to help guide the team through rough patches this season. Cherry has been on Buckeye squads that have made the NCAA tournament and on a team that lost more games than it won.

“I can use that kind of experience to help guys, especially if they’re struggling right at the beginning, because I know I have been there a lot in my career,” Cherry said. “Just being able to let them know that it’s not the end of the world. It’s not the end of the season.”

Cherry, who came into the season batting a career .240, leads the 2019 team with a .379 average. He has also launched three home runs so far this season.

There is opportunity for the Ohio State offense to thrive against a Bethune-Cookman team that is allowing more than 10 runs a game. The Wildcats also have hit 20 batters and thrown 11 wild pitches in only seven games this season.

Junior pitcher Anthony Maldonado has been a bright spot on the mound for the Wildcats, with a 3.27 ERA and nine strikeouts in two starts this season.

On the offensive side, redshirt senior infielder Brandon Wilkes has hit .500 this season to go along with seven RBIs. Wilkes has six of his eight hits and all seven of his RBIs in the past two games.

Overall, the Wildcats are struggling at the plate. The team has a .217 batting average and only two home runs on the season.

Bethune-Cookman has also been severely beaten on the base paths this season. The team has only stolen one base, while allowing 22 stolen bases on 24 attempts.

Ohio State came into this season with a lot of questions that needed answers. The first two weeks have shown the potential of the team, but it also shed light on the inconsistency a young team can bring to the table.

“I’m excited for us to get back out and get into the third weekend of the season and really identify ourselves and how good we’re going to be,” Beals said.

The Buckeyes will begin their series at 7 p.m. Friday. This will be followed by a 6 p.m. Saturday game, a 4 p.m. Sunday contest and a 1 p.m. finale on Monday.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Ohio State baseball team evened the series Saturday night with a 6-0 win at Bethune-Cookman at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Freshman right-handed pitcher Garrett Burhenn improved to 2-0 throwing 6.1 scoreless innings, while junior right fielder Dominic Canzone was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one RBI and two stolen bases. With their third shutout win of the year, the Buckeyes improve to 6-4, while the Wildcats drop to 4-5.

QUOTE FROM COACH
“We did a lot of good things tonight,” head coach Greg Beals said. “Our guys responded very well and that’s the ball club I’m fighting for. That’s what I know we are capable of and that’s what I’ve seen us do. We did it during opening weekend. You got to be locked in mentally in order to do all the necessary little things well. Our defense was very solid. Dom Canzone with a big throw in right tonight and Carpenter dove and kept the ball in the infield to allow us to roll another double play ball. We don’t throw a shutout without some big plays defensively. We were able to score early for our rookie pitcher and Garrett commanded his fastball well.”

STARTER TALK
Burhenn, from Indianapolis, Ind., kept the BCU bats off the board for 6.1 innings behind a strong defensive performance. He ran into trouble in the sixth inning as the bases were loaded, but fired back-to-back strikeouts to put another zero on the board. He recorded the first out of the bottom of the seventh and struck out five on six hits with two walks. He tallied seven groundball outs, including two double plays, in his second shutout performance of the season.

BATS START HOT
Noah West set the tone in the top of the first when he led off with a double down the left field line. He scored the first run of the game on a RBI single by Canzone. Cherry plated Canzone on a sac fly to make it 2-0. The Buckeyes loaded the bases in the fourth before Nate Romans hit a sac fly to deep center to push the lead to 3-0.

SOLID DEFENSE
Burhenn was fielding his position at a high level tonight. He made a diving grab on a pop-up bunt in the third and also turned double plays to West in the third and fourth innings. Canzone picked up his first outfield assist of the year in the bottom of the fourth to record the first out. He came up firing from right field on a single and threw a strike to third baseman Zach Dezenzo who applied the tag on Nate Sterijevski. Ohio State turned a third double play to end the sixth.

BUCKEYES ADD ON
Ohio State added a fourth run in the sixth when Malik Jones pushed home Brent Todys with a sac bunt. In the seventh, Marcus Ernst drove in Matt Carpenter with a one-out RBI single through the left side. A double steal and wild pitch allowed Canzone to cross the dish on a heads-up play to put it at a 6-0 advantage.

TO THE BULLPEN
Freshman left-handed reliever Mitch Milheim ended the sixth inning when he induced a ground ball double play. He worked 2.0 innings with three hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Fifth-year senior right-handed reliever Thomas Waning finished the game recording the final two outs with one strikeout.

UP NEXT
Ohio State and Bethune-Cookman meet at 4 p.m. Sunday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Griffan Smith (2-0, 1.50) is on the mound for the Scarlet and Gray

Sat Foppe and Pohl and put a bit more speed out there with Carpenter and Ernst. Not only speed, but Carp and Ernst had 3 hits between them tonight...Foppe and Pohl have combined for 8 hits all season. We saw straight steals, hit and runs, and bunts tonight with this lineup.

Pitching did a good job of battling all night. BC left 14 guys on base.
