Big East Commissioner Interview

Adam Locked

Texas Buckeye
http://media.putfile.com/bigeastcomish

His interview this morning with Colin Cowherd. The main thing I got out of it was that he said that the Big East is unwilling to go play on the road against a big conference opponet, they want them to come play them at home.

He also said that teams are "trying" to schedule against big conference teams but the other teams don't want to play them... right.

If his stipulation is that they play at the Big East site he probably is right.

Scheduling involves a lot of give and take. If the Big East has an inflated view of itself they may be asking for more than their due. IMO they need to prove their worth first.

And FWIW the last time OSU played Wv it was at WV.
Last five times they played Pitt three were at Pitt.
Last time they played Syracuse was at Syracuse.
And the last two games against Cincy have been split between the two cities.

His statement of "Well if we go on the road against USC we're admitting that we're lesser and not as good as them (paraphrased)" is a funny statement, becaue it's TRUE! No Big East team is as good as USC, they have to go on the road to prove themselves, then they will come and play them.

Actually turn that around - USC does go on the road, pretty much anywhere, anytime to play big-time opponents (not just ND :)). This year Arkansas, next year at Nebraska, two years following the Huskers at Ohio State - I'll leave methomps to fill in the rest and any future gigs.

Honestly, if he wanted to pick an example of a team trying to leverage an at home advantage, without the willingness to reciprocate there are much better examples (cough - Auburn - cough).

It has nothing to do with power or the perception of power. It's simply about money.

Outside of Pitt and WVU, the Big East teams stadiums aren't big enough to exchange a home date with a major BCS program. Rutgers and Syracuse can trade home-and-homes with Michigan State and Illinois every year, but if they want to add Ohio State or Michigan, they need to add seats and field better teams.

FWIW, Ohio State was going to play Syracuse, until the Cuse went into the toilet and Ohio State bought the contract out. For OSU and UM, the risk (playing a BCS conference team outside their region) has to be worth the reward (the game must be on national TV).

Ohio State at Syracuse or UConn is as appealling on a national scale as Ohio State at Baylor or Ohio State Mississippi State.

It has nothing to do with the Big East's status as a conference, but the status of the teams in the conference.

Mike Tranghese, who I have a great deal of respect for, especially after he took the high road in the interview during the game last night, knows that the programs that he does have must invest money to get back to where the conference was five years ago. If WVU or Louisville have a 'home' venue that'll seat 85,000+, and there's an assurance they'll be a 10-win capable team 10 years from now, I think JT and Gene Smith would schedule them in a heartbeat.

The bullshit part is the idea that the big school not wanting a home and home is due to a percieved lack of respect. The truth of the matter is it's simple economics.

The BE school makes just as much for a big time road game as they would on their 45,000 seat home stadium. The big time school can't afford to go to a 45,000 seat stadium they would be giving up crazy money.

EDIT****
Dryden got me by 2 minutes

not to be a stickler for accurate details, but the last two OSU v. UC games have been in Columbus (2004 and 2006).
2002 was in Cincinnati and 2000 was in Columbus.
