I think that expansion is likely to happen, not necessarily next year but sometime in the future, with that being the case I think we should get it over with as soon as possible. Once the conference is at twelve teams I doubt it would expand again so the teams and fans can get used to the new team and eventually be happy with the stability of the conference in whatever form it would take.
My preference is that if we go to twelve I’d like to see Syracuse come in. They might not be great in football right now, but hopefully they’ll be a decent team in the future. They do however bring a good basketball and lacrosse team to the mix as well as a fine academic reputation.

As for how I personally would like to see the football schedule work out, I would be fine with a championship game only if it were made into something special and not a yearly event. Since the coaches, teams, and the fans wouldn’t like going to a schedule with eleven conference games, the conference would have to be split into divisions.

The tital game would only take place if two teams came out of conference play with the same record and did not play one another. So the Big Ten might not have a conference title game for fifteen to twenty years at a time and then need to schedule one at the end of the season. I think this set up changes the title game from an annoying gimmick to a really interesting game to watch when it needs to be played.

The way I would like for it to work out, is for each team to play the five teams in it’s division yearly as well as one team from the other division. Then rotate in two other teams from the other division so each team only avoids two teams a year. The east division would be Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Penn State and Syracuse while the west division would be Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue and Wisconsin.

For demonstration purposes the out of division teams that would play each other yearly would be.

Ohio State – Illinois
Michigan – Minnesota
Michigan State – Iowa
Northwestern – Purdue
Penn State – Wisconsin
Syracuse – Indiana

I think it would be fun to have two "special" weeks in the year; one where all of the out of division rivals play in the middle of the season, and the second the traditional rivalry game at the end of the season.
So here is a sample conference season:

Ohio State:

1 Michigan State
2 Purdue
3 Northwestern
4 Minnesota
5 Illinois
6 Penn State
7 Syracuse
8 Iowa
9 Michigan

Michigan:

1 Indiana
2 Illinois
3 Michigan State
4 Syracuse
5 Minnesota
6 Wisconsin
7 Penn State
8 Northwestern
9 Ohio State

Michigan State:

1 Ohio State
2 Wisconsin
3 Michigan
4 Indiana
5 Iowa
6 Syracuse
7 Illinois
8 Penn State
9 Northwestern

Northwestern:

1 Penn State
2 Syracuse
3 Ohio State
4 Illinois
5 Purdue
6 Indiana
7 Iowa
8 Michigan
9 Michigan State

Penn State:

1 Northwestern
2 Minnesota
3 Iowa
4 Purdue
5 Wisconsin
6 Ohio State
7 Michigan
8 Michigan State
9 Syracuse

Syracuse:

1 Minnesota
2 Northwestern
3 Purdue
4 Michigan
5 Indiana
6 Michigan State
7 Ohio State
8 Wisconsin
9 Penn State

Indiana:

1 Michigan
2 Iowa
3 Wisconsin
4 Michigan State
5 Syracuse
6 Northwestern
7 Minnesota
8 Illinois
9 Purdue

Illinois:

1 Wisconsin
2 Michigan
3 Minnesota
4 Northwestern
5 Ohio State
6 Purdue
7 Michigan State
8 Indiana
9 Iowa

Iowa:

1 Purdue
2 Indiana
3 Penn State
4 Wisconsin
5 Michigan State
6 Minnesota
7 Northwestern
8 Ohio State
9 Illinois

Minnesota:

1 Syracuse
2 Penn State
3 Illinois
4 Ohio State
5 Michigan
6 Iowa
7 Indiana
8 Purdue
9 Wisconsin

Purdue:

1 Iowa
2 Ohio State
3 Syracuse
4 Penn State
5 Northwestern
6 Illinois
7 Wisconsin
8 Minnesota
9 Indiana

Although you don't agree with most people's opinion on NW moving out of the Big Ten.. It'd be the most logical move by the Big Ten. Northwestern is the only private school, the enrollment rate is 7,400. The next closest to that enrollment is Iowa at 28,705. There is a HUGE drop off in enrollment and it affects NW's ability to stay up as one of the top teams. Let's admit it, Northwestern lately has been at the bottom and I don't see them moving up anytime soon.
Your entire post is horse shit. Mili has just posted recently how NW has achieved far more than several other "finer" schools over the past several years. ANd please remember that ultimately the Big Ten is about academic acheivement as well.

I believe I read where NW has the 6th best record in the big ten since 2002. Do all the teams who finished with worse records get kicked out too?

You don't kick Vanderbilt out of the SEC for being a smaller, private school.

You don't kick Stanford or USC out of the Pac-10 for being smaller, private schools.

You don't kick Baylor out of the Big-12 for being a smaller, private school.

What makes Northwestern a less-valued conference member than any of those four?

If we were to expand what would eveeryone think of say Cincinati. I don't know any specifics but it seems like a plausable addition

It'll never happen for three reasons--all of which apply to every other Ohio school.

1) They bring nothing to the table academically. They're not AAU members, and the Big Ten has made it clear that Notre Dame is the only non-AAU school that would ever be considered for membership.

2) They don't expand the Big Ten's footprint, nor do they turn on any additional television sets

3) Ohio State would not allow an in-state school to compete with them in the Big Ten

Pitt is an infinitely better fit for the Big Ten, and even they're not perfect in the footprint/television realm.

Yeah!
Plus, they're the only team in the conference with purple jerseys. You gotta have purple in your conference!

I say "last in, first out". Sorry about your luck, PSU. Go join the Big East, where you fit in better anyway.

I would much rather drop a team than add a team. Then we could play a true round robin and settle the championship on the field every year.

They should be kicked out...that USC team will never amount to anything. And even if it did, Stanford would never be able to beat them...

If the desire from the B10 is legit and considering the lack of good matches you might have to think outside the box a bit if your the B10.

Maybe find an academic fit from the MAC, if one exists I really don't know, and consider the fact that they may very well grow to B10 caliber athletically if given B10 status/money etc. It would probably cost the B10 money for a while but that would have to be weighed vs the potential income from a BTTG.

All in all I just don't see a fit but if they were hell bent to do it and ND wasn't the 12th team then thats my SWAG.
