Xavier's C.J. Anderson passes the ball under pressure from Miami University's Tim Pollitz, right, after a scramble on the floor.

No. 12 Michigan State 86, Chicago State 53 -- Raymar Morgan had a career-high 25 points and 15 rebounds to help Michigan State beat Chicago State last night in a first-round game of the CBE Classic in East Lansing, Mich.
Morgan had 15 points and six rebounds in the first half as the Spartans took a 45-26 lead. Drew Neitzel had 12 points for Michigan State.

The Badgers are leading Florida A&M 58-19. I realize these are lower level D-1 teams that UW is beating, but these magnitude of demolitions cannot be ignored. The swing offense isn't set up in a way run away with games, so it makes this all the more impressive.

Sophomore Trevon Hughes has been the most pivotal factor in the "surprising" impressive start for the Badgers this season. I called that he'd be special when he committed to Wisconsin over 2 years ago. He had a Dwyane Wade-esque ability to get wherever he wanted on the court. Not saying that's he's quite that level of player, but he's very good. About 3-4 inches shorter than Wade. However, has a better handle. Similar court vision. Makes plays for his teammates. Wreaks havoc in the passing lanes. Hounds guard on the ball. Athletic...especially with his feet on the ground. Pretty good mid range jumper, but can't stretch the defense persay. The majority of Badger fans at Scout had him rated as our best player prior to the season, and I concurred. 20+ points each of his first two games.

Other x-factors are: Stiemsma, Krabbenhoft, and Butch. Stiemsma will simply be more productive because he's a senior. Bo has a propensity to play seniors more because he stays loyal to the players who've stayed loyal to him. Stiemsma needed more leash in the past to not get yanked every time he fouled, because his biggest asset is aggressively patrolling the lane. Krabbenhoft is more assertive because it's a necessity. He was a 5-star player as a prospect. Butch is another 5-star of course who is fully recovered from his injury, and he's somewhat transformed the "yucky body".

My only real concern is shooting from the outside consistently. Flowers is a little bit lacking in that area too. Bohannon is a sniper, but he's small, lacks quicks, has a slow delivery, and it's released from low on his head. Butch will be one of the most important players for Bucky again with his ability to draw bigs out of the paint. The Badgers collapsed without him in '06-'07.

The Badgers don't lack potential as was claimed in the other thread. UW has as good of a shot as any in a very open big ten this season.

Watching the MSU - fUCLA game right now.....

Honestly I don't think anyone in the Big Ten except Michigan State and Indiana would be playing within 10 points of UCLA right at this moment, but UCLA is beatable. And I am again reminded of how inconsistent NCAA refereeing can be at times in watching this game :shake:.....

I can't wait to see the "What travels less - Kevin Love, the planets, or Tyler Hansborough" thread on any other forum....

UCLA is very beatable without Collison...With Collison they are that much better, but still teams can present mismatches if they have the size, much like MSU had tonight, but MSU just has bodies, they don't have the skill with their big guys...

MSU had this game, but bad turnovers let UCLA back in it...

Overall with MSU and Illinois, not bad showings for the big ten tonight...

If Illinois doesnt go 2-whatever it was to start the second half they are right in the game...They just don't have anytype of guard play at the moment...Maybe some of the younger guys can step up later in the season, but come big ten Illinois will make some noise and I do believe they are a tournament caliber team...

That was MSU's problem last year and something I think they haven't quite fixed yet.

Neitzel can't play 40 minutes every night and without him on the floor, it's a completely different team.

Some of the turnovers came from Walton which suprised me...Morgan was real sloppy tonight once he got in foul trouble...Lucas while very talented is still a frosh and got himself into spots where he turned it over as well...

Nice effort from the Spartans tho...

I saw just a few minutes of each game but here's what I got out of them:

Illinois - More athletic than I thought they were. They also had a cold streak towards the end of the first half that allowed Duke to build a 15 point lead (to credit Duke they were playing some great D). When they are hitting their shots they are a pretty good team.

Michigan State - Saw just the first few minutes of this game... sounds like they imploded in the second half. They look very physical and athletic. I'm torn between MSU or Indiana being the best team in the B10 right now.

Good effort by both teams.

College basketball roundup
UCLA derails Spartans' upset bid

Wednesday, November 21, 2007 3:28 AM

No. 2 UCLA 68, No. 10 Michigan State 63 -- Kevin Love scored 21 points and Josh Shipp added 18 and UCLA (5-0) overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to beat Michigan State (3-1) last night in the CBE in Kansas City, Mo.

Continued.....

No. 13 Duke 79, Illinois 66 -- Gerald Henderson scored 23 points and DeMarcus Nelson added 16 to help Duke (4-0) beat Illinois (3-1) in a Maui Invitational semifinal in Lahaina, Hawaii, and give the Blue Devils a shot at their fourth tournament title.

I would say that Illinois is pretty athletic, but man they are really lacking any kind of talent in the backcourt...They need Jamar Smith...But Frazier why he is a steady player, once Dook put the clamps down on defense they couldnt get the all to the big guys where they dominated Dook all night...

Wouldnt really say they imploded since UCLA is a very talented team, they at times showed their youth, fouled way too much, and had some turnovers...But with the lead they had and the way they played in the second half there are only about 2 or 3 teams in the country that would of been able to pull the game out the way UCLA did...
