Big Ten is a Clean Conference

Bob Buck

Buck Fanatic
One of the reasons why I like Big Ten football so much is because the football teams almost always play a fair game even though the conference is getting so tough that almost every game could be considered a rivalry game. There are a few isolated incidents that stand out in recent memory (Robert Reynolds in Wisconsin), but on the whole our guys are all really stand up fellows. That sentiment is also reflected in the fact that six Big Ten teams are in the Top 25 for fewest penalties per game:

1. Iowa
9. Michigan (tied)
9. Penn State (tied)
14. Ohio State
18. Illinois
25. Minnesota

After the top six are:

31. Wisconsin (tied)
31. Michigan State (tied)
42. Purdue
45. Northwestern
91. Indiana (fluke of nature... obviously)

I think this shows that the coaches in our conference are doing an outstanding job... or maybe the refs are not calling holding enough... but either way, thumbs up Big Ten!!!

if you are referring to the choke on sorgi, it was rob reynolds. the infamous "reynolds wrap". but that is nice to see. i think it has alot to do with the poor officiating. but if so, that would make it seem as if the refs have it in for indiana. wtf? btw, texas is averaging a lil over 9 penalties a game. i could be wrong, but i sure as hell dont remember them getting nearly that many called on them at the 'shoe. i know there could be many reasons, but just kinda stuck out to me.

Nice point. but damn, they have A LOT of penalties.

Here is a breakdown of IU's penalties this season. I do not differentiate between offensive and defensive penalties, but I did notice that the majority of the holding penalties were on their offense.

False Start:__________9
Holding:____________15
Kick catch int.________2
Personal foul_________6
Delay of Game________1
Substit. Infr._________3
Face Mask__________5 (all but 1 were 5 yarders)
illegal block__________2
offsides_____________4
Intentional Grounding__1
Illegal Forward Pass___1
Illegal Procedure______3
pass interference_____2

I compiled this simply by going through the play-by-play of their games, so I'm certain there are mistakes and omissions.

What's interesting though is the huge number of holding penalties. As you would expect in Big-10 games, the opponent was being called for holding very seldom, about once per game. These guys must be tackling d-linemen!

They are in serious trouble.

wow. thanks for the breakdown. and yes, yes they are in for some serious trouble.
OK.

1. Blake Powers has attempted 226 passes in 6 games, that's about 38 attempts per game.

2. Indiana is clearly suffering the growing pains of adopting Hoeppner's spread offense, since over 50% of their penalties are motion, false start, substitution, or offensive holding.

What's the over/under for Bobby Carpenter's number of sacks against this o-line this week since he'll see half his time as a DE for this one? 5?

Did I miss a road sign? I thought we were talking about how clean the Big 10 was. Have to get a new needle, this one keeps skipping.
