Big Ten official allegedly tied to gambling, abuse

BTW there has been some claims on other boards that he didn't actually work the OSU/UI game. Rather he was replaced at the last minute.

Anyone have details on that? Or confirmation that he was in fact on the sidelines.

He's listed as the referee in tOSU's official box score for the game.

A nod to Dryden for saying much of this first, but nobody kept Tress from throwing the red flag on the end zone fumble. There was more than enough time to get the word from the booth to Tress.

The Refs didn't keep calling for the long ball to Robiskie or Hartline. The refs didn't cause so many missed tackles. The Bucks were flat, no excuses for that. Probably looking ahead to The Game. It happens.

Absolutely Illinois wanted that game more than the Buckeyes did. The Illini played to win. The Bucks didn't.

And in the end even with the loss Ohio State is playing for the national title so the loss was not a disaster regardless of the reason.

Still IF (and this is a giant IF) a corrupt ref influenced the outcome of that game I want there to be an accounting.

I agree with you. Human make errors. Officials make officiating errors, players make playing errors, and coaches make coaching errors. Fans often cite questionable officiating to explain why they lost a game; but they fail to recognize that within the game it mostly evens out. The issue is different here because the random nature of questionable officiating calls/noncalls can no longer be believed. This official is ethically comprised and therefore his officiating might have been skewed in such a way to accomplish an end result to his desire. The press should care about corruption, but who knows if they will.

Right now the sports media has itself concerned with the academic fraud case at FSU because there are more storylines from it. Will this be the straw that forces Bowden to retire? or worse yet, will the AD actually face the backlash and fire the second winningest coach of all time? What storyline can they create out of this, That a Buckeye team they don't believe should be where they are might have, god forbid, actually been unbeaten if it wasn't for corrupt officials? I'm not expecting any headlines soon, anybody else?

After i left the stadium in shock and had other drunken people yelling about killing themselves all around me. I thought we had the stars align chance to get in the game. It happened and looking back, that loss to Illinois may be the Bucks saving grace come Jan. 7 because from what I've heard that loss got them refocused and gave them the humble pie they needed to be successful in execution again. I just thank the Lord of Hosts that those guys didnt blow it for us against scUM. I truly believe I'd still be throwing up.

Big Ten to increase background checks on refs
Illinois game official under scrutiny

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Big Ten announced yesterday that it will begin conducting annual background checks on its officials for football and men's and women's basketball games.
The conference announced the change after a Yahoo Sports investigation into football referee Stephen Pamon. The report said that during the past 15 years, Pamon has been accused of sexual harassment, fired from the Chicago Police Department, convicted of misdemeanor battery against his girlfriend's children and declared bankruptcy in part because of gambling losses.
Pamon was chief of a seven-man crew that worked the Ohio State-Illinois game Nov. 10, the Buckeyes' only loss of the season. Television replays showed the Illini fumbled early in the game and the Buckeyes recovered, but officials awarded possession to Illinois, which went on to score its first touchdown in a 28-21 win.

He reffed the game. I was there and saw him. I know this because my friends and I make fun of him all the time. We call him Don Baylor. Every time he makes a call we make the announcement "Don Baylor says.........(insert call here)".

Unfortunately there weren't too many "Don Baylor says.......Holding, Illinois, 10 yard penalty, repeat 3rd down".

Yeah, yeah, yeah, everyone saw the fumble. Everyone blames the refs. No one asks why Tressel didn't throw the flag. Too early in the game? Didn't get the word from the booth (hard to believe)?

It was Tressel's call to make and for whatever reason, probably wanted to hold the challenge for a more important part of the game, he didn't challenge the call.

I'm sure he had his reasons and if he had challenged and lost then we might have an argument.

I will say that it makes me believe that a coach should be entitled to more than 1 challenge in a game and that the replay guy in the booth needs to work faster. They're way too slow in deciding if a call needs to be reviewed, especially when the right call is often seen by the home viewers long before the review is finished. Maybe its an equipment issue. I can believe that the replay capability of the networks is much greater than that of the officials.

i thought the whole point where everyone had their panties in a wad was that osu doesn't have monitors in the coaching booths so they couldn't tell whether or not to challenge.

still for the replay equipment to be down at that time is inexcusable.

Some of you remember, or might remember the phantom touchdown Arizona State had in the Rose Bowl. It took everything Ohio State had to win. Don't underestimate the drain and shift on momentum when the officials blow something of that magnitude. I get what you're saying about they didn't want it as bad, etc. However, they were severely let down by the officials--not just on the fumble but on multiple holding calls which arguably put them in positions to panic.

I won't blame the officials completely for the loss but I'm not going to minimize its affect either.

Cinci'; I respect you like no other, but the above is an unfortunate choice of words.

There may have been a more frequently asked question on BP this year. Then again, it is possible that there wasn't a more frequently asked question. That question alone is a big part of the reason that mods locked so many threads on Game Week.

Frankly, I think that the overall tone of this board is that Illinois won that game straight up. If you want to see real whining, go to "grassy" and ask them about a call that was declared "demonstrably correct" by Referee Magazine (yes, there really is such a thing).

You are right that many people had their panties in a wad about OSU not having monitors in the coaching booth. The fact that it is against the rules to have them seems to have been lost on the panty-wadders.
