Big Ten Tourny Wrestling Results

Ugh!! Well, we weren't expecting much, and that's what we're getting. Heading into semi-finals, only Bergman remains in the championship bracket. Buckeyes are at dead last in the standings. Guys are going to have to wrestle their butts off in the consolation bracket.

Anyone remember how many Big Ten qualifiers advance to Nationals?

This is getting pretty damn pathetic, and certainly disturbing to see as a wrestling fan. When in the hell was the last time that a great St. Ed's wrestler came here? It's bad enuff seeing Bertin and Jayne in the finals of the Big Ten, but what about even guys like Percival at Ohio U. How did they (and alot of others) miss out on Jake. I know it took him his whole High School career to win his title, but that kid was downright dominating. One would have to think that given a "choice" between TOSU and OU that he would have chosen the BUckeyes. Wouldn't One?

I actually had Matt Delguyd's grandparents in the store a few weeks ago. After they made their purchase and I saw their name, I had to ask if "any relation" to Matt the Wrestler. They confirmed, and added when asked that Matt was never approached by the Buckeyes.

Woody, OSU has a 4 time Indiana state. champ on it's roster and next year another 3-4 timer will enroll at OSU. I know Indiana high school wrestling is not on par with Ohio but the 2 I have mentioned have been ranked very high in national rankings. I believe the Maurer kid was unable to wrestle this year due to a serious injury that happened over last summer.

Chief--that is what is frustrating to many Buckeye wrestling fans. Hellickson pulls some great talent from out of state, but allows too much Ohio talent to leave the state. When you consider the talent pool in Ohio HS wrestling, that will always be a net loss to tOSU.

Gotta wonder, with a new AD coming in, with a start date of April 15, if Hellickson will be around next year.

Anyway, before we bury Hellickson, let's urge Bergman, Enright, and Nail on in the final day of the Big Ten Tourney, and forward into Nationals. Go Bucks!!

I understand that Maurer is a great talent and all, but I want the top talent at every weight class. And there is no reason that Hellickson can't achieve this by keeping these kids in Ohio. I DON'T want a dangerous tournament team, I want a great "dual" team. Everyone knows that 4 or 5 wrestlers can get you high on the scoreboard at the NCAA's-we showed that last year. I want a team that is gonna be a force in a dual meet. Wrestling is a "team" sport of "individual" performers. At the high school level, the "dual" is pretty much a thing of the past. Everything is Triangulars, Quads, and Tourneys. Any true fan of the sport will tell you that the greatest thing you can witness is a Dual meet of two talented teams.

Completely understand your point WW as I watched at least 15 high school matches this year. I was just pointing out that the OSU does have some top notch talent. Heck I spent several days watching wrestling this year. LUV IT!
My favorite team has made it the IN. high school team state finals for the last 6 years.

This will begin to be a decent dual team next year. Add Mauer and Jaggers to Enright, Bergman, and Nail, and that's five solid spots. Then figure that the rest of the youngsters will have a year of experience under their belt and should be more dangerous. We won't likely contend for the dual title, but we won't lose them all. Next year's team should be much improved. The question is whether Hellickson will be around to enjoy the fruits of this year's hard labor.

Some folks think the problem begins at the top. I cannot recall a blue chip St. Ed's kid on the team in the last 20 years.

Illinois has Jayne and that school up north-the one with the ugly helmets-has Moos and Bertine.

Schlatter (not an Ed's kid) went to Minnesota as did Koz.

Last year they placed 3rd in the NCAA and graduated every All-American except Bergman and he has had his up and down moments this year.

I hope that Maurer and Hump will both be in the line up next year and be a part of the group that turns things around.

However, Blake and Reece are two of the best Indiana has to offer, and I truly believe both will make their marks at OSU before they are done. Both kids need to get healthy first.

Reply </TD><TD class=m vAlign=top align=left>Re: Buckeyes finish last! <HR SIZE=1>Reece will most likely redshirt due to the juggernaut that OSU has in the light weights. TJ Enright at 133 qualified for nationals as a true freshman. Jeff Jaggers started strong at 141lbs and Jason Johnstone did well when Jaggers went down. Both are true freshmen. The only way I see Reece starting next year is if he can make 125lbs.
Hellickson recruits well, but can't seem to keep the recruits. He recruited some studs between 133 and 149, but there may be a lack of spots for the guys to all wrestle successfully. Someone will have to either gain weight or lose it and will not be at their full potential. --------------------

Reply </TD><TD class=m vAlign=top align=left>Re: Buckeyes finish last! <HR SIZE=1>Y2,

I disagree that Johnstone has done a good job. I watched a couple of matches on TV and it appeared every time he was scored on he looked at the OSU bench as if to say "What do I do now?"

Bone,

I sure hope you are right. Bergman needs to step it up in St. Louis. His finals match at the Big Ten lacked emotion and intensity and those are the two attributes that enabled him to earn 3rd place last year.

Enright is a maybe. With a good draw and a little luck he could be an AA.

Nail does have an outside shot. Heavyweight is pretty solid this year with everyone being a distant second to Mocco.

Good luck to all the former Indiana kids and of course, GO BUCKS!

A thread from a Indiana wrestling forum I thought you might like to read! BTW Reece Humphrey is a 3 time Indiana champ that will be at OSU next year.
