I don't think comparing Weis with O'Brien is fair. I think, and I think O'Brien has proved, that he far far FAR better and classier than Weis.

Gosh, you set such a high standard for BOBo to cross......

Well, there's certainly no shortage of NFL HC jobs opening up--espn.com has 4 on its front page right now (Browns, Eagles, Chiefs, Chargers). You've got to think the Chargers job would be attractive with Rivers there, and the Eagles job based on brand name value alone.

O'Brien's buyout could double to $18.4M

O'Brien's agent, Joe Linta, said in an email to the Post-Gazette Sunday night that no NFL team had contacted his client. "Bill has not spoken to any NFL teams and no NFL team has sought Penn State's permission to speak with him as of today," Linta wrote.
If any team, college or pro, wants to hire O'Brien it will be forced to pay a significant buyout. His contract states that if O'Brien terminates his contract with Penn State for any reason other than by death, disability or incapacity, the damages would equal his base salary ($950,000 for last year) and additional compensation ($1,350,000 annually) multiplied by the years remaining on his contract.
Under those terms, a buyout would equal about $9.2 million if applied to the original duration of his five-year contract. But because his contract was automatically extended another four years because of the NCAA sanctions, the buyout amount could be doubled to $18.4 million.

Why would anyone hire him for the NFL?

Because his team finished 2nd in their division of the B1G. No coach had more against him that that guy did.

You gotta give it to him - he did one hell of a job after losing starters, not gaining a damn thing after the NCAA raped [irony][/irony] them after the issues there.

I'd want him to go just to see the wailing and gnashing of teeth in Happy Valley.

Similar to 5 other coaches, he did a good job beating Wisconsin. He kept a team together. That's fine and good for a feel good story. We're talking about the NFL here.

I think he'd do fine. Anybody who has to first put up with a bastage like Tom Brady (who is a TSUN grad) then put up with Zombie Joe Pa deserves a shot.

Yeah the same league that keeps giving Norv Turner and Romeo Crennel Head coaching chances and had someone named Pat Shurmur as a HC for 2 years....

Given the circumstances, I think he did a great job. I doubt any Tom, Dick or Harry can come in this year, face the adversity he has faced, and pulled out the same (or better) results. You're not giving him enough credit for what he pulled off this year.

Would his agent really allow the buyout to be doubled? You'd have to think the guy was REALLY committed to staying in Happy Valley if that is true.
