Bill O’Brien (HC Boston College, aka BillyBob O’Buttchin et al)

Yeah.. he may burn a couple of bridges if he goes to BC. He may get a little bit of a bad reputation. But that will be forgotten pretty quickly if he wins at BC.
Someone said what his son's condition is, but I forget. I'm sure Ohio State has someone who can treat him. He may even get better care in Columbus. I won't be the judge of who is better than whom in the medical world. But BOB and family are familiar with the doctor they have in Boston. And that probably goes a long way.
I don't make decisions on who coaches where. But if my manager comes to me and says, "Yo, BOB wants to work here. What do you think?" I'd be a little hesitant to agree to hire him based on his situation, and leaving Ohio State now will only make my opinion a little worse. But BOB needs to make the best decisions for BOB and his family.
Meh...fuck bridges. BoB may not be the world's best whatever, but he'll find something in football if he wants it, when he wants it.

His kid's health and being there is likely (and should be) more important to him.

His son's illness is called lissencephaly. It's an extremely rare brain disorder that causes him to have daily seizures, often requiring a trip to the ER. There "may" be someone in Columbus who they could work with, but the top specialist in the world for his son's illness is in Boston where his family lives, and apparently they weren't going to make the move to Columbus because of that. I think since the BC job didn't become open until after BOB took the OSU job, most people are giving him a pass for wanting to stay near his family and getting the best care possible for his son. Some things are far far more important than football, or even a job for that matter.

To be clear, I'd absolutely choose to stay close to my family. My company is mostly based on Houston. I can't see why I'd be asked to move to Houston, but let's say I'm asked to move to Houston. If my family can't or won't move to Houston, I wouldn't go. I won't blame BOB if he doesn't go. I'm just saying that that's the worst that could happen by leaving Ohio State now: that he burns some bridges. The bridges are nothing compared to family.

I don't know what kind of agreement or discussion that O'Brien had with Day concerning the number of years he was committing to the OC position and/or his desire to actually live in Boston, etc. Maybe O'Brien was upfront with everything all along and maybe not. If he was, I have no problem with what is going on. If he wasn't surely, Day should have been suspicious when he became aware of the fact that his family wasn't moving to Columbus.

It internet reports that O'Brien is worth between $7M - $15M, the Ohio State OC isn't about the money; he just wants to stay in coaching.

I just noticed that Harvard just hired a new head football coach, it is the Rutgers' TE coach. I wonder if O'Brien had any interest and/or was considered for that job. It might have been the perfect position for him. O'Brien has to be more "qualified/experienced" than the Rutgers guy too.

Need to say this. You take a job, part of that agreement is that you will deliver certain services for a reasonably expected period of time. I get that O'Brien has family issues but I am equally certain that the services he needs are available in Columbus...and if they are not, then he shouldn't have take the job. If he bolts now, then I will be among those who lose respect for him.
Normally would agree about “sticking to your word” etc, but the uncertainties related to the timelines of coaching vacancies give them a little bit of grace with me. It’s a very demanding and fluid career.

Bill O'Brien not moving his family isn't that weird though. When someone works long hours or travels a lot and also moves their family alot, there is a point that the family just will basically refuse to move with them. They basically know how to operate without that person and most likely have a support system in place to do so. Finding that support system may it be paid people or extended family is hard to do especially when a family member need the level of attention that his son needs.

It's not really publicized but a lot of pro athletes basically do it. I see a lot of normal people do it too. Families get tired of moving and sometimes the breadwinner just get overrules about moving by not just their spouse but the whole family.

This might have just been the moment it clicked in Bill O'Brien's head that his career pursuit vs his family might mean just taking the lesser job so his family can have some stability or just stability until he finds a job with long term potential.

This is a little over the top. I have a child with severe medical issues. I would take a Job in another state before I considered uprooting her. Think about starting Care over with 15-20 new specialists, starting over with therapists who know your child. If his child is on medicaid, you have to reapply in the new state you move to which can take years. All of that, with no guarantee he will be employed for more than one season and could have to pack up and move the sick child again. 100% out of the question. If I was in his position, I would do the exact same thing...move for the new job to maintain insurance while immediately finding a path back to my family.

An official announcement from Boston College is expected in the coming days.

Well, is it back to Blarney O'Ballshake, Brobert O'Ballinhand, or Barfly O'Bennigans, etc. now?..........
