It will be the second time Sutton has done that. He did so earlier in 1987, when he went to the Betty Ford Center while he was the coach at Kentucky. Sutton did not say where he will seek treatment this time.
Oklahoma State president David Schmidly said Sutton's future would be addressed after he returns from his medical leave of absence. Sutton's son, Sean Sutton, will continue to coach the Cowboys in the interim.

"If anybody has seen this man, (they) know what kind of pain he's in," Schmidly said. "He's 69 years old. We've got to get Coach to focus on his health. That's the most important thing."

tibor75 - Why do you think this is funny? Do you not think this is a serious issue? He made no excuses about it and admitted to what happened. This is probably the end of a great career for Eddie, and hopefully the start of another with Sean.

Get well soon Eddie.

It's just pathetic when a loser like this who has a problem only fesses up to it when he gets in trouble with the law. And this guy is supposed to be teaching and directing today's youth. No sympathy for this retard.

So now you are calling him names. Nice and such a class act. There a plenty of people who still give excuese even when they are caught, blaming it on other circumstances and people, but not Eddie. He came out and said he had a problem with alcohol and he will get help for it.

<!-- INLINE TABLE (END) -->He will be replaced by his son, Sean Sutton, who has been head coach designate for the past several seasons.

"I believe Sean will take this program to even greater heights," he said.

Eddie Sutton coached OSU for 16 seasons. He also coached at Creighton, Arkansas and Kentucky over a 36-year career. He was the first coach to take four different schools to the NCAA Tournament. He has coached in three Final Fours.

"This decision is simply about what is best for me and what is best for Oklahoma State," he said at a press conference on Friday afternoon.

Sutton pleaded no contest May 5 to drunken driving charges for a traffic accident in which his SUV swerved, collided with another vehicle and then hit a tree.

Sutton, who underwent treatment for alcoholism at the Betty Ford Center in 1987 while he was coach at Kentucky, has said lingering back pain was a factor in his relapse.

"The pain at times literally has been unbearable. ... The pain was so bad that I took a lot of pain pills, but that didn't seem to work, so I succumbed to temptation and went and bought a bottle," Sutton said in a news conference five days after the accident.

Court records showed his blood alcohol concentration was 0.22, almost three times the legal limit.

Since the accident, Sutton has undergone surgery to relieve back and hip pain brought on by a pair of spills two years ago and he also went through a five-week inpatient alcohol treatment program.

On Friday, he said his future plans include a new alcohol education and support program at Oklahoma State.

"I'm excited about this opportunity and feel it will be something of lasting value," he said.

Eddie Sutton ranks fifth on the NCAA Division I career coaching wins list with 798, including four that came after he took a medical leave of absence following a Feb. 10 accident but were still credited to his record. His final career record is 798-315.

Only Dean Smith (879), Adolph Rupp (876), Bob Knight (869) and Jim Phelan (830) have more career wins than Sutton.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
