Bob Knight says he might return to coaching

INDIANAPOLIS ? Bob Knight, the winningest coach in Division I history, left the door ajar to a return to coaching college basketball during a wide-ranging television interview broadcast Wednesday night.
"I got nothing else to do. It would just depend on the circumstances," the former Army, Indiana and Texas Tech coach told host Mickey Maurer on "Mickey's Corner" on Indianapolis public TV station WFYI.
Knight, well-known for his crusty demeanor, peppered his answers with language that brought on several bleeps, but overall was laid-back during the hourlong interview taped Sept. 10, eight years to the day the Hall of Fame coach was fired from Indiana, which he led to three national championships in his 29 years there.
The interview didn't cover any of his replacements at Indiana or the current state of the program that is still reeling from former coach Kelvin Sampson's high-profile phone-call scandal and awaiting word on possible penalties from the NCAA.
When asked generally about recruiting and cheating in the NCAA, however, the 67-year-old Knight didn't mince words.
"In college basketball, if you get caught cheating, they should shoot you because you're too dumb to be alive," he said.
Most of the interview, however, was a trip down memory lane as Knight reminisced about the titles his teams won at Indiana. He said he tried to recruit players who were smart, because "in winning, the mental is to the physical as four is to one."

That would be a tough NCAA penality.

Is he saying it's that easy to cheat? Or you shouldn't cheat?

I think he is saying that if you have to cheat to win in college basketball that you should be shot because you shouldn't have to cheat to win. I don't think he ever did and he won quite a few games.

When Michael Jordan had 19 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in a half of basketball, Bob Knight asked him why he wasn't setting screens.
Jordan responded by telling his coach he was setting screens, they were just happening too quick for Knight to see.
That anecdote, from the 1984 Olympic Games, was one of the many highlights of Knight's speech at Eisenhower Auditorium, the first in this year's Student Programming Association Distinguished Speakers Series.
Scott Press (senior-journalism) said he "didn't really know what to expect" from the famously volatile coach, but he liked the quick, witty responses Knight gave.

Bob Knight on ESPN game day

Anybody watch game day on ESPN with Bob Knight as a guest analyst. It was different I always liked Bob Knight. He use to spend so much time up in Woodys office on the third floor in St. Johns Arena when he played BB for Ohio State. Coach Taylor always had to go get him for practice and woody enjoyed his company. Many storys are out there about Knight as a player for OHio State. He was quite a character in his time.

New IU athletic director can bring back Coach Knight

Posted: November 4, 2008

Congratulations to Fred Glass on his appointment as athletic director for Indiana University. He has the background, talent and passion we have needed for several years. We're fortunate that the committee has the insight to bring in such a respected and outstanding individual. And he is 100 percent Hoosier!
Now it's time to correct sins of the past presidents and have Coach Bob Knight back to IU for the unveiling of Robert Montgomery Knight Hall (Assembly Hall).

Knight's just one of the guys, though he insists he isn't

The Virginian-Pilot
? November 14, 2008

As a coach, Bob Knight delighted in ridiculing the media, so when he appeared on a conference call this week to discuss his expanded role with ESPN, a few ink-stained wretches took the opportunity to tweak Knight about his new career choice.
Despite his protests to the contrary, he has joined the industry he always disdained.
"I'm a coach that's talking about basketball," Knight said. "I don't consider myself in any way a member of the media."
Denial, Mark Twain once reminded us, ain't just a river in Egypt.
In his expanded analyst's role for ESPN, Knight will bloviate courtside on Thursday nights, make frequent studio appearances and sit on the panel for Saturday's College GameDay. He'll also be heard on ESPN radio.

Bob Knight to be inducted into IU's Hall of Fame
Posted: August 22, 2009

It is part love letter, part olive branch. But mostly, for Indiana University's athletic department, it's the right thing, the overdue thing to do.

IU will announce this morning that former basketball coach Bob Knight is among seven luminaries who will be inducted into the Indiana University Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in November.

The inductees -- Knight, Steve Downing (basketball), Jerry Yeagley (soccer), Katrin Koch (women's track), Alan Somers (swimming), Joe Norman (football) and the late Mike Rabold (football) -- all have been informed of the honor, leaving open the biggest question of them all:

STARFILES: A look back at the career of the legendary basketball coach.

Will Knight, who was fired in 2000 in a hail of controversy, return for the official ceremony Nov. 6 and the halftime ceremony the next day during the IU-Wisconsin football game?

"I hope so," said first-year athletic director Fred Glass, who is a member of the committee that selects Hall of Famers. "I really do. My personal opinion is that the stature of IU's Hall of Fame and its members were diminished by its failure to have Bob Knight in it. That's going to change."
