Tom Archdeacon: Laughter the best medicine

By Tom Archdeacon

OXFORD ? Once Sam Lickliter's heart suddenly went so bad ? when he all but died in the backyard of his Kettering home on New Year's Eve ? Bob Knight showed his heart is pretty darn good.
"I got a note yesterday from Knight. How he knew about this is beyond me," Lickliter said as he sat alongside his longtime pal and fellow officiating supervisor, Randy Drury, on Thursday night while they watched Kent State brush aside Miami, 74-62.

"Knight goes, 'Heard about your illness. Take care of yourself and do what they tell you,' ... and he adds, 'I always admired you as a referee ... not like those guys today!' "
Lickliter was laughing now and so was Drury. Before retiring recently, both were longtime officials ? Lickliter 29 years in the Mid-American Conference, 22 in the Big Ten, Drury 32 in the MAC and 25 in the Big Ten ? and both love to tell the "other" Knight-Lickliter story.

"I'm happy that I've been able to coach this long cause I've basically enjoyed coaching probably 70-30, anyhow. That's a mark of longevity as much as anything so I'm just glad I've lived this long."
Bob Knight, Texas Tech coach, on his 900th win

My view of Knight has mellowed over the years. When I was younger, I did not like how he showed up his players on TV and Ithought he was a big bully. As I've aged (and read one of his books) I still think he is a bully, but he is old school, says what he thinks and does not give a darn what people think of him.

He was probably born 25-30 years too late as his style is somewhat taboo now. Bottom line is that he seems to care about his players and is loyal to them, when they are loyal to him.

Congrats on 900 wins coach.

Bobby is a bully lol, but hey he doesn't just bully his players , he bullies everyone. He played BB at tOSU during the reign of ta duh ... Woody Hayes.
Like Hayes he demands the best form his players and tries to get them to excel at all they did, to give 105 % all the time. Yes he did some dumb things but Bobby Is one hell of a man and one hell of a BB coach.

I agree BB, the one thing I cannot put behind me is thinking what I would do if he head butted my son on National tv (if he deserved it I'd probably say ok coach, but next time could you kick his a$$ at practice instead?)

I think that Bobby is of the opinion that he doesn't give darn what his ex-players think of him as long as they are better people and citizens when he is done with them, and that ain't so bad.

Kinda hoping this isn't a health related issue that is causing him to step down like this. With what he has done for college basketball, the least he deserved was a bow at midcourt to a standing ovation. Uncerimoniously resigning and retiring in the middle of the season is awfully odd. Bobby's not your typical coach in many different ways, which might be an excuse for this kind of behavior, but Bobby's no quitter either. Something's not right here.

Me thinks I know what the topic of the day will be tomorrow in the sports world...

yeah i found myself thinking the same thing..he is the winnigest division 1a basketball coach ever and after reading the article on espn it just states that he resigns midseason with no major reason stated. im a little confused at the moment.

I figured this would be his last year, but didn't expect him to step down midseason.

Same here. I knew 900 was a goal and once he got it that would be it, but to not finish the season surprises me.
