book refundable rooms before they increase

Hi all,

This is just a public service announcement to book your hotel rooms (refundable of course) for the big ten championship game (Indy) and the BCS National Championship game (Pasadena) before prices spike. I found decent hotels for roughly $100 in each city (although the hotel I booked in Pasadena is now $800 so that one has obviously already popped)...

Again, make sure they are refundable so you aren't stuck with a wet blanket if the bucks don't make it for some reason...

I'm a believer; I'm in. Which hotels are you looking at?

I booked the Hilton in Indy as well as the Hilton in Pasadena. The Pasadena Hilton was $109 with the proper promo code (it is now $799), the Indy Hilton is currently $134 non-refundable or $143 refundable (using "N0041604" as the corporate rate, which give 20% off and can be canceled... the only catch is you have to be an Hhonnors member to use that promo code (however joining Hilton Hhonnors is free, so no problem there)...

The Pasadena hotels are all crazy high now... so you either need to pay the crazy high price before they sell out, or pick a hotel in a different part of LA and drive to the game... hope that helps...

You can go a bit east on the 210 and get good rates and still be a quick drive to the game...

Save yourself the headache if you haven't booked yet and stay at the Hyatt in Anaheim, get out of LA and in a nice part of town out there with reasonable rates. Doesn't hurt that the food surrounding Disneywhatever is also very good :)

Just another thought here - Palm Springs area is about 1-1/2 hours away by Interstate 10, and you can play some golf the days before and after the game at some terrific desert resort courses. There's also a couple of casinos, a high-end outlet mall (think Barney's New York, Zegna, Saks and TAG/Heuer), and spectacular desert scenery on display, along with some great food.

It's high season in the desert around New Year, but not $800-a-night high. If you have a large group, look into renting a timeshare at a Westin, InterWest or Marriott property. You can probably get two full bedrooms for about $400 a night, sleeping up to 6 people pretty comfortably with a pretty nice kitchen.

I'm a Diamond Hhonnors... I don't travel enough to get the highest level for several chains... Even with the recent (massive) devaluation of Hhonnors points, Hilton still works best for me. I'll get free breakfast, a room upgrade if available, access to the executive lounge (free), free wi-fi, lots of points, a 50/50 shot at some drink chits, and a stay credit and three nights towards Diamond (checking out in January will also move those credits to 2014 instead of 2013... which for me is good since I make Diamond status in late summer or early fall most years).

I booked it because the price was right, the location was right, and it's more points (as worthless as they've become) for the Hhonnors account. If you really want a nice stay you should focus on Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, or Newport... In January baseball will not matter, and Disney isn't exactly a selling point for me, outside of those two thing, Anaheim is average compared to the above cities in/around LA.

Ha... funny you should say that... we'll be there (Palm Springs) the week before the game for a vacation (regardless of who makes the BCS game). If the Bucks don't make it, I'll extend three nights, if the bucks do make it, then I'll keep the two reservations (one week in Palm Springs, then three nights in Pasadena)... I have airfare booked with awards already... now we just need the Bucks to do their part of the deal :tongue2:

Just a heads up regarding palm springs... I originally booked a stay using hotel points, however there is currently a nice BRG (best rate guarantee) available at the Renaissance in Palm Springs. As long as you keep your bookings in three night increments you can book the refundable rate on marriott.com then submit a BRG using the "getaroom.com" price match (plus Marriott will discount an additional 25%)... the BRG only works if booked in three night increments (for whatever reason getaroom.com has the third night free and the Marriott rate doesn't). End result depending on check in date is a mid $50's or mid $60's rate... add bonus is the fact the resort doesn't charge a resort fee.

I booked two three night stays back to back. End result after taxes is well under $400 for the six nights... not bad considering the normal nonrefundable rate is $1,150 and the normal refundable rate is $1,300 plus taxes...

The BRG has come and gone (I noticed this last week and didn't do anything about it... over the weekend I booked one three night stay to verify the brg would work... it did), I then booked a second three nights to create a back-to-back situation and was denied the brg (getaroom had fixed their error price), then I noticed last night it was back up (meaning incorrect), so I tried again and was given the brg.

As I type this the trick isn't working (getaroom has corrected the error) however I'm guessing they will goof again.... when/if they do, make sure to grab it and submit the brg asap. Again, for the last week this trick has come and gone. If you have any interest keep an eye out and grab it when it comes back...
