Bowl Possibilities for tOSU

Can't waste the day when the night brings a hearse
Now that tOSU has 6 wins, I thought it was time to look into the possibilities of bowls that we could expect to see the Bucks playing in.

Obviously, winning out, getting help and winning the BTCCG sends us to the Rose Bowl. But other than that what other possibilities are realistic.

Win out until the BTCCG and lose there - 9-4 record - Somewhere between 2nd and 7th/8th in conference
Lose one remaining conference game - 8-4 record - Somewhere between 3rd and 8th
Lose two remaining conference games - 7-5 record - Somewhere between 5th and 8th
Lose the final 3 games - 6-6 record - Somewhere between 6th and 8th


Bowls that would correspond with said rankings in B1G and possible opponents

Rose Bowl- BTCCG Winner(1st)- vs Pac 12 1st
Capital One Bowl- 2nd- vs SEC 2nd
Outback Bowl- 3rd- vs SEC 3rd/4th
Gator Bowl- 4th- vs SEC 6th
Insight bowl- 5th- vs Big 12 4th
Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas- 6th- vs Big 12 6th
Ticket City Bowl- 7th- C-USA 2nd
Little Ceasars Pizza Bowl- 8th- vs MAC 1st

Obviously alot of the Bucks rank in conference has to do with other games. So here is the breakdown of games in importance per each week down the stretch.

Week 11
Nebraska(7-2, 3-2) @ Penn State(8-1, 5-0)
Michigan State(7-2, 4-1) @ Iowa(6-3, 3-2)
Michigan(7-2, 3-2) @ Illinois(6-3, 2-3)
Ohio State(6-3, 3-2) @ Purdue(4-5, 2-3)
Wisconsin(7-2, 3-2) @ Minnesota(2-7, 1-4)
Northwestern(4-5, 2-4) @ Rice

Week 12
Nebraska(8-2,4-2) @ Michigan(8-2,4-2)
Penn state(8-2,5-1) @ Ohio State(6-4,3-3)
Wisconsin(8-2,4-2) @ Illinois(6-4,2-4)

Then Wisky vs Sparty for the B1G.
Wisky winning and playing in Rose Bowl vs an At Large team.
Leaving tOSU as the 4th best option to choose.(Likely meaning Outback/Gator Bowl with Wisky/MSU to Rose, and other in BCS or Cap 1.

What are your thoughts?

I think it is very realistic for State Penn to lose out. Seeing what is happening at State College now.

Ohio State has played better as the year has progressed. This is nothing new. Have they improved enough to beat MSU or Nebraska in the B1G title game? I think so. The answer to your question, Bowl possibilities=Rose

As this is a "Bowl Possibilities" thread, I think the discussion would be clearer if we made a semantic distinction between "2nd Place - 8th Place" and "2nd Choice - 8th Choice".

After the BCS takes the automatically qualified and the at-large (if such berths are available) teams; then other bowls choose.

If the Buckeyes win their next three and lose in the CCG, it will be interesting to see what the Capital One Bowl would do. Their choice would be a 4-loss Ohio State team or a (presumably) 2-loss Wisconsin team; the Ohio State fan base vs. the team with the more telegenic offense.

In what may turn out to be a weird twist, a 2-loss Wisconsin team that doesn't even make the CCG may make it as an at-large bid to a BCS bowl over a tOSU team that loses in the CCG. But they would need to start climbing their way up the BCS rankings for that to happen.

Edit - Aw crap. That's what I get for taking so long to post something. DBB beat me to it. But here's what I posted:

I think that it is important to note that, unless something has changed in the past half-decade or so, the rank does not automatically attach a team to the bowl game. Except for the Rose Bowl. After the Rose Bowl and other BCS bowls choose, the Capital One Bowl gets the next choice of Big Ten teams, followed by Outback, etc. The bowls are not committed to choosing the highest-ranked teams.

Again, I may be wrong about that. But in 2000 (or so), Northwestern should have been chosen second, to go to the Capital One Bowl (maybe it was still the Citrus Bowl at that time). However, Michigan (#3) was picked, and then Ohio State (#4) was picked to go to the Outback Bowl. Northwestern dropped all the way down to the Alamo Bowl (and got smoked by Nebraska).

I would rather play Stanford for several reasons.

But for this team, this year, simply getting to the Rose Bowl would be a remarkable feat. It would be a rare moment where Ohio State had nothing to lose in a BCS bowl.

here's a bowl possibility: we might stay at home for the holidays if the NCAA bans us from post-season play...

And I just heard yesterday (most of you probably already knew) that if we are banned from the bowls, we cannot play in the B1G championship game.

12 games and that's it.

Hopefully, Penn State will help us by making gold pants for tattoos look pretty freaking trivial.

Having said that, bring Oregon on - or Stanford - or Alabama. This is college football and if we are at our best we can beat anyone.

If it isn't the Rose Bowl, I sure hope it's in Florida on New Years' Day. Preferably Capital One since I'll be in Orlando already. *crosses fingers*
