BP Vacation Thread: What To Do Where You're Going

Will be going to Oglebay "Resort" in WV with family for a week in June... Anyone been there? Reviews of Oglebay offerings or suggestions for nearby excursions will be appreciated.

the golf is the primary attraction, they do have a large pool there at the resort and a bunch of activities and tours. In Wheeling they have Wheeling Island Casino and Dog Track. if you have never been to a dog track its pretty interesting. About 10 Miles south of Wheeling is the old WV State Pen in Moundsville. If you enjoy old Prisons with a lot of history this is a good one to visit.

Two great golf courses are located at Oglebay. It's a pretty place. Nearby excursions would, however, prove disappointing IMO - unless you like shopping at Cabela's, which is located just outside Weirton, maybe 15 miles away.

A little further up the river from Weirton is the little town of Newell (across the river from East Liverpool) where Homer Laughlin China is located, home of Fiesta Ware. Not a great interest to me, but many folks seem to love the stuff.

Other than these things, if I were you I'd look to spend as much time in Pittsburgh as possible - a great city with many attractions, and only about 45 minutes from Oglebay.

I suspect you meant Wheeling rather than Weirton in your first paragraph? Cabela's in Wheeling is about 10-12 miles from Oglebay.

Weirton is about 45 minutes up the river from Wheeling and then Newell is about another 30 minutes beyond that.

Drive off the hill into Wheeling for Wheeling Downs (dog racing and casino). The Center Market area has some interesting shops and Coleman's Fish Market is worth a stop. Oglebay is a beautiful place and you will find plenty to do.

I'll be taking a mini-vacation in Maine in August. 3 days camping in Acadia and 2 nights in Portland. Recommendations for someone who loves food and the outdoors?

Acadia is gorgeous. My wife and I had a blast there last year. We did the typical hiking, camping and beach thing. We also went rappelling and really enjoyed it. I hope that you have better luck finding decent food in bar harbor than we did. We ate out twice and both meals were awful. I remember one of the places, The Mad Hatter's. Avoid it. Horrible food and worse service. Can not remember the other place.

Portland is a different story. There is an abundance of great seafood places. However, you need to make it a priority to visit Duck Fat. http://www.urbanspoon.com/m/r/259/1412737

Great place for lunch or a casual dinner. Bistro/cafe style restaurant. Really neat atmosphere. Sandwiches and paninis are unique and tasty. I had the spicy italian panini and loved it. They have the best fries (frites) that you will ever eat. Save room for dessert too. Beignets were incredible and the "Original Milkshake" was one of the best things I have ever had.

Good to hear the confirmation on Duck Fat; that's one of the places my Internet research suggested. We'll probably hit up a lobster pound one night while in Acadia and cook over the fire the other two nights. Are there plenty of fresh seafood markets/stands in the area if we want to grab some stuff to put on the fire?

Update: good recommendation from grad right here. Oglebay is by-God beautiful WV hill country, and even with my entire family of in-laws I only left the resort once all week, to go lay some money on the greyhounds at Wheeling Island. Really nice golf courses, a surprisingly fun zoo, putt-putt and fishing and my daughter's first pony ride. Centre Market and Coleman's got good reviews from the womenfolk as well. Very affordable trip too, always a plus.
