  • It takes many forms, and they're all bad. People who take advantage of children in this manner, programming them before their young brains are capable of intellectually challenging what they are told, are criminals in my mind. Unfortunately, if anything, this practice is increasing as kids are turned into robots spouting what they've been told by their leaders about religion, politics, and those around them. These videos are fucking creepy.

Doesn't matter where, when, who, or why, but HATE is created.

Or the opposite, blind devotion to something or someone without ever really using thought and reason to get there. Politics and religion seem to be favorites in this regard.

Either way, it's destructive to the child's development and a form of child abuse, IMO.

Fandom has it's own passion, but it doesn't quite fall into the brainwashing as evil mind control category. :tongue2:

    brainwashing:
    1. Intensive, forcible indoctrination, usually political or religious, aimed at destroying a person's basic convictions and attitudes and replacing them with an alternative set of fixed beliefs.
    2. The application of a concentrated means of persuasion, such as an advertising campaign or repeated suggestion, in order to develop a specific belief or motivation.

Pay attention to the alternate definition, Tao.

Every one of us has a story about watching games with our parents, grandparents, etc and it being a special, repeated time that included positive reinforcement as part of the ritual. It may not be an ugly form of "brainwashing" but it still fits the bill. :wink2:

However, it doesn't generally incite violence in the same way as the extremist versions shown in the youtube videos included here which may be what you were trying to imply, I'm guessing?

"Brainwashing" has only truly one real definition. And it's the one of pure evil and anti-American values. That's what we're discussing here. American values. That's what Jake is saying. But, you knew that didn't you? :tongue2:

Agreed, completely. Unfortunately, those who employ these methods see it as simply "instilling values", values being a very subjective term.
    1-Don't kill babies-born or unborn
2-Try to avoid being a slut/man-whore, wait until marriage to have kids if at all possible
3-Marriage is for those who procreate

I fail to see the "hate" in these values

I'm not sure why you quote me for this comment. Values ARE subjective, each person has different ones, prioritized differently. The hate is the out of control passion that incites the violence that usually comes with extremist values such as shown in these videos.

Your values, as stated, for example, are not mine. But until you come to my house and try to beat the shit out of me for not believing in the same values as you, there isn't any hate involved as far as I'm concerned.

Brainwashing is defined by American Heritage Dictionary thusly:

    brain?wash?ing (brān'wŏsh'ĭng, -w?'shĭng)

    n.
Given that children do not a priori, in the absence of parental (or other external) influence, have any "basic convictions and attitudes" that can be replaced with an "alternative set of fixed beliefs," I fail to see how true brainwashing is feasible with children.

IMO, when people discuss "brainwashing" in connection with kids, it really is code language for "inculcating beliefs that I do not agree with." But really, if a parent does not indoctrinate her beliefs with her own kids, she's a poor excuse for a parent, again IMO. In the words of Bob Dylan, you gotta serve somebody.

I misunderstood your comments-I thought you were painting with a broader brush than just the yahoos in the videos-my bad.
