Brian Urlacher was fined $100,000. for wearing a non NFL authorized hat and drinking a bottleed water
Fair or not.

Way extreme to me. The NFL has a lot of money to protect but this kind of money for one infraction ? Too much

NEW YORK -- Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was fined $100,000 by the NFL for wearing a cap during Super Bowl media day that promoted a sponsor not authorized by the league. NFL rules prohibit gear that advertises any product but a designated sponsor, league spokesman Brian McCarthy said Wednesday.

100K is waaay too much. And why is this just coming out now? If he was payed to wear the hat, then the NFL should just take that money, not 100K$ for putting a damn hat on. Is the NFL going a little overboard now that they have the Pacman Jones suspension. Domino Effect, they do one huge fine/suspension and now they think they can do anything?

this has happened in the past. I believe there was a Bears QB (McMahann?) who did something similar and was fined. The next game he wore a headband or something with the commisioners name on it? anyone else recall this?

More proof that there are way too many lawyers in this country.

I have divided thoughts... on the one hand the NFL has kept the NASCAR sticker parade off the product (I'd endorse a ban on the ubiquitous "John 21" signs too) and kept us from having each player turn himself into a billboard. But its also a part of the "trademark/corporate" wars that strengthen brand name identity not necessarily to our advantage.

this isn't steep at all. The actual fine should have been $200,000 because of the hat AND the bottle.

The NFL gets paid a lot of money by Gatorade, and part of that agreement is that they only use Gatorade. That makes a lot of money for Gatorade.

When you have the highest profile player on a SB team sporting another sports drink's hat (that he probably got paid to wear), you're going to piss off Gatorade unless you do something about it.

The NFL (brought to you by Nike) has fined Brian Urlacher of the Chicago Bears (brought to you by Bank One) for ignoring the standing Sponsor of GATORADE and wearing a hat of and drinking a non-NFL supporting drink. In a statement issued (on Mead paper) from the offices (built by Home Depot) in Canton, Ohio, the President of the Bud Light NFLPA says that they will appeal this case in the highest court that the NFL doesn't own.

The NFL Commissioner's Office (Protected by Brinks Security) has stated many times in their Starbucks Town Meetings that unauthorized and excessive marketing and product placement will ruin the league's integrity.

I'm sure Ulacher got more than that to wear it. (And if not, I'm sure the company will take care of it). The NFL fined Kitna 5K a few years ago for wearing a Christian oriented hat. I don't think it had any kind of advertising other than for Christ. Now, that I thought was over the top.

Doesn't look to be too upset in this pic... Link

You know that rookie orientation seminar the NFL has ever year? We always thought it existed to help guide players through the potential minefield of off-field issues in the NFL. We now know it's just to make sure they know which products are acceptable

I was going to give you some greenies (brought to you by Chlorophyll Inc) until I found out I had to spend some virtual (brought to you by Dell Inc) money (brought to you by Parker Brothers and Monopoly). You'll have to settle for this and a  . (Brought to you by Prozac and the American Dental Association)
