Haters? We don't need no stink'n Haters!

I think that it's safe to say that with any big time program (and there's none bigger than ours) that there will always be haters.

With a following as large as ours, and the copious consumption that takes place prior to kick-off, you'll always have situations where one of ours does / says something that we wouldn't be proud of -- and that kind of sets us up to be hated. Nobody remembers polite fans, they just remember the bad examples. Let's just hope that we never have to explain something like what that kid at PSU pulled behind the Pike house in Happy Valley. What an embarrassment.

And to be brutally honest, we've had a bit of a reputation of not being very gracious winners. Sour grapes are one thing. It's entirely a different thing to force feed the sour grapes to the opposition.

At the Purdue game I was walking around the tailgating area and I felt like I was kicked in the teeth when I heard a Purdue student say to another, 'Just let it go, you know that it's Ohio State, they're just as bad as Michigan (fans).' I felt compelled to go over to this guy who was just chewed out by some tOSU folks for letting his football go into their tailgate area. This poor kid was hassled by one of ours because he didn't catch a ball for crying out loud. I had to apologize to him on behalf of all of us and told him that 'he _should_ just let it go, and know that we're not all like that.'

That all said, I don't think that things are anywhere near as bad as they used to be. Disclaimer: I was at tOSU during the Coop era.

Frankly, that's one thing that (and I'm sure that I'm not alone when I say this), I love about JT. I absolutely love the class and school spirit that JT has brought with him. To hear the players interview these days and contrast that with the locker-room wall fodder of the past is quite interesting. There's many examples of how gracious and team focused this group is these days. It starts with the coach and is manifest in the players actions and words. (Just think of how Troy gave so much credit to the team any time anyone wanted to talk about his season last year. And that continues on today.) I think that the class and attitude is further manifest with fan behaviors as well. God love JT. It still brings chills to me to see the team sing to the band after games. The class and school spirit makes me proud to be associated with tOSU, and that's not something that I could easily say during my stay in Cols.

Just a couple of examples to make my point:

Was playing a round of golf at TPC Scottsdale last October with a bunch of MSU alum in the group in front of my wife and me. We chatted on one of the tee boxes about B10 football and they all had great things to say about tOSU and made a point of mentioning how they all loved JT. I made a joke about it being related to his record against TSUN and they all laughed. One said, "Yeah, that too..." and went on to say how the reputation of the team seems to have changed for the better as a result of JT. It was a very nice and totally unprompted complement.

Also, was down at Disney last December. I was wearing a Woody Hayes tOSU ball cap and ran into a guy about my dad's age wearing a TSUN sweatshirt. We had a really nice talk about the season. Ended up that we found ourselves in the same place, but rooting for different teams. Both of us were big fans of the B10 and realize that the better the B10 does, the better off our teams will be. He complemented the Bucks for having a 'Magical Season' and said that there were a bunch of TSUN folks up there who would be pulling for us during the NC game. Who'd of thunk it? He also mentioned the nod to Bo before The Game. He said that it was a much appreciated gesture. I'm sure that gesture goes / went a long way to further the class image that tOSU continues to establish. Not that tOSU image maintenance was the intent.

I guess after writing all of this I've come to the realization that there will always be haters. Some times the hatred may be 'justified' other times, the justification is based in nothing more than our team's success. But at the same time, for all the haters that there are out there, you come across a lot of people who you expect to be 'haters' who are actually just the opposite -- just fans of GREAT college football -- fans of their GREAT teams -- and if their team isn't playing, fans of a GREAT conference.

Go Bucks

Go Big 10+1!

What world did you grow up in? Anytime there is a competition , or a prize , or a rivalry people will hate, How many people in here say they hate this team or that guy? The same hate you say exists against us is the same hate you have in your heart.
